Staying Safe

When we brought our services outside over the summer and worked on our interior spaces, we did so in anticipation of this day.  As you know, all counties in New Hampshire, including ours, are experiencing substantial community transmission.  Our local schools, faced with Covid cases and reduced staffing due to possible exposure, are transitioning to remote learning. We have remained vigilant and committed to safe practices.  We have planned for this, and so I am able to tell you that our services will be continuing at the present "By Appointment" level, with only some minor adjustments to enhance safety and respond to reduced staffing.
Details are below, along with some exciting new announcements and some special visitors to add some joy to a tough start to the winter months.
Be well.  Be safe.  Be kind.
Please feel free to contact me any time at
Kind regards, Julie M. Perrin, Library Director - a.k.a. Ms. Julie

Public Service Hours Updates

Due to the rise in community transmission, we are making a few tweaks but remaining at Service Level YELLOW.
Per our policy, we cannot accommodate walk-ins at this service level.

  • The Bookworm Boogie appointments will transition to more limited browsing on the Main Floor only.  Items on the Ground Floor and History Floor may be requested in advance or at the time of your visit. For example, if you know you want holiday crafting books, let us know in advance, and we will bring up a cart of books for you to browse on that topic.
  • The Lab will still be open for Reading to the Rats and browsing, but no close rat handling with Ms. Andrea for the time being.
  • Keep your visit short and sweet, please.  We will enforce (and may reduce) the 30 minute rule during this time of substantial community transmission.
  • We have to keep the rest rooms open, but since we have to clean them between appointments, it would be lovely if you go before you leave home and didn't need to use them here. Please?
You will continue to have Lobby pick-up, browsing on Boogie days, and access to public computers for up to 30 minutes.  The hours and scheduling remain the same. If staffing becomes more restricted, we may need to reduce hours or further limit appointment times in the future, but we designed this model to work with unforeseen staffing limitations.

What could cause us to close or change service levels?

A positive case on staff could mean closure if other staff had to quarantine.
If a staff member tests positive at the library, we will follow all quarantine requirements and contact anyone who could have been exposed. (That's the main reason for appointments.)
Right now, we require all staff to stay home with the slightest illness, out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with state guidelines for employers.
Our goal is to keep you and our staff safe!

Our Zen Zones in action!
Families who picked up a Zen Zone kit to help their children focus on homework are reporting success.
We have nine Zen Zone kits left.  If you would like one, please call Ms. Andrea at the library.  Each kit includes a folding, private workspace that can be personalized/decorated by your student, goal setting and incentives, focus tips, and even headphones, with a convenient carry handle to bring your Homework Zen Zone to Grandma's or the dining room table.
Zen Zone kits are yours to keep.

Coming Soon: A New Book Club for Adults

We know it will be a long winter, so Ms. Eileen has agreed to lead a new Zoom book club for adults, beginning in January, featuring short stories.  We have acquired multiple brand new copies of The Best American Short Stories 2017, which we will distribute to adults who would like to join the new book discussion group.  Books and more details will be available after December 1.
Depending on the state of community transmission, we may be able to do this as a hybrid meeting -- with some people in the library and others on Zoom, but plan for Zoom right now.
If you are interested, email Julie and we will reserve a copy for you to pick up in December.

Newsbank Enhancements!

In case you missed the announcement, we have upgraded our Newsbank subscription from the regional plan to the national plan.  You now have free online access to 3,495 news sources!  You can read or listen to the latest from magazines like The Atlantic and Smithsonian, newspapers like the Boston Herald, NH Union Leader, the Miami Herald or your hometown paper anywhere in the country, and even the transcript of news shows like 60 Minutes.  Log in via our catalog and click on Newsbank.
What's more, Newsbank has added new features to keep you informed and help with remote learning.  Along with Hot Topics and Special Reports on key global issues and events, they have added Daily Headlines with Lesson Plans in all subject areas.
Don't hesitate to give us a call if you need help logging in or for a refresher, check out our Tech Help Tutorials.

Two Special Visitors in December

Watch for some very important event announcements, coming soon.
The children of Jaffrey have been so amazing that we just got word that Pete the Cat is coming to visit for three whole weeks, starting December 1!  Can you believe it?!!  And he is so impressed by how groovy you are, that he is bringing special books for you to keep for your home libraries.
Pete knows we can't do crowds so that is why he is quarantining appropriately so he can have small, scheduled in-person but masked and socially distant visits with families at the library, just a few at a time over the course of a few weeks.  We are so excited!
And there's more!
Santa is also joining us for a Zoom Storytime on December 9th at 10:30 am so save the date!
You kids are just rocking the goodness this year.  Your librarians are so proud of you!

Holiday closures

The library will be closed for Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26 through Saturday, November 28.  We will resume our normal appointment schedule on Monday, November 30, but do ask that if you have traveled or gathered over the holiday, please consider choosing Grab & Go only. Thank you, and be safe!
