Hooray for the Book Drop

These are indeed unusual times.  Who knew how much we all valued the convenience of the lowly outside Book Drop?  Who knew that its return to service would be worthy of celebration someday?

Well, that day to celebrate is here. I am so happy and know you will be, too, that the outside Book Drop is again available for your returns!

We have a new quarantine method that will allow us to check the items in to quarantine and take them off your account, while still keeping them unavailable.  At the end of the quarantine period, the items will again be checked in to service and available for reserves/checkout.

This means that your returns will be more adequately reflected on your account, before the end of the quarantine period.  It also means we can open the book drop for your returns.

We ask that you do not return STEAM kits to the Book Drop, but make a curbside appointment for their return due to their size and value.

Also, if you find the Book Drop is full, please just wait another day.  We have enabled auto-renewals on all items, and materials forced in to an overflowing bin can be damaged.  We will empty it as we have staff available to check the items in to quarantine.

More exciting service announcements below!
Stay healthy!
Please feel free to contact me any time at
Kind regards, Julie M. Perrin, Library Director - a.k.a. Ms. Julie

Schedule your Curbside Appointments Online!

Tired of playing telephone tag with your librarians?  We are continuing to offer 90 curbside appointment slots each week, and you can now schedule your appointment online!
Just place your reserves, and once you have received your notification that they are ready, just click here (or on the link on our Library-to-Go page on the website) and sign up.  You can even reschedule or cancel, right from your phone or computer.
Please wait for the notification that your reserves are ready before scheduling so we have time to retrieve them and check them out to you.

Prefer to talk to a librarian?  Need help selecting items?  You can still call us at 532-7301.  Please don't hesitate to leave a message.

Bring your Parasol - Outdoor Browsing Coming Soon

While we continue to ready our building for the enormous task of turning it into a space conducive to social distancing, we really want you to be able to browse for books and movies.
How does one browse safely for books in a pandemic?
  • Wear a mask!  (So you don't breathe on other people or their books.)
  • Browse outdoors, weather-permitting!  (So germs dissipate... we hope.)
  • Use self-checkout (when possible).
So, the staff and I got together and started planning out our staff parking area to offer Outdoor Browsing and checkouts during our Wednesday and Thursday Curbside Appointment hours, beginning July 1.

This will be a great trial for what indoor browsing and staff interactions could look like.
So, mark your calendars...
  • Wednesday, July 1 at 2:00 - 4:30 pm
  • Thursday, July 2 at 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
Here are the details:
  • This is a SUN only event.  Because of the time it takes to bring materials in and out, we can't risk it if the weather is threatening.
  • For the safety of all, you will be required to use hand sanitizer and wear a mask before entering the outdoor browsing area.
  • No appointment necessary!  However, to maintain social distancing, we may need to limit numbers at a given time.
  • If you have your library card, we will encourage you to use self-checkout.
  • If you have lost your card, we have a pandemic special of free replacements at Outdoor Browsing events!
  • If you aren't comfortable with self-checkout, library staff will be on hand to check out your materials.
  • If you really like curbside pick-up, that's okay.  We are still happy to select your books and reserves and have them ready curbside.
  • Curbside Pick-up is rain or shine, but Outdoor browsing is shine only.
We are so excited.  It will be a giant outdoor book party!
Over 100 people have signed up to participate in Summer Learning and the list keeps growing.
In the first three days of Summer Learning Curbside, all 50 of our first round of STEAM kits were checked out, so our staff are scrambling to add more.

More Kits Added...  More Coming Soon!

We are all so pleased with the popularity of our new STEAM kits.  If you missed last week's detailed list in the newsletter, you can read it here, or just search "STEAM kit" in the catalog.

Some great photos of our Summer Learning participants are filling our inbox.  WE LOVE SEEING YOUR PHOTOS!  And we really love that even in a pandemic, you love to learn with your library.  Whether you are learning to sew, going birdwatching, or viewing the world at a miscroscopic level, we are glad the library is joining you on your journey

It's not too late to sign up for Summer Learning

  • How do I get started?  SIGN UP HERE!
  • Then what?  A member of the library staff will call you to set up a curbside pickup appointment for your packet of learning fun.
  • Is it all online?  No!  We want you to get outdoors, which is why our theme is Into the Wild: Imagine Your Story!  We are preparing a mix of activities so you can decide how much screen time you want.  Our new STEAM Kits are designed to give you all you need for off-screen library learning fun, just like we do at our in-library programs.
  • What if I want to be online?  You can be!  All of our virtual programs will also continue!  Visit Library-to-Go any time, 24/7, learn a new language, or download a book or audio.  Your digital library is always available.
  • What about BINGO?  Your library BINGO sheets will be included in your packets.
  • Prizes?  Did you say prizes?  Oh yes,the details will be in your packet.

Thank you so much to our many sponsors!
Congratulations to our Board Chair, John Stone!
John has been selected to join the Board of the New Hampshire Library Trustee Association!
John was a Trustee back when the addition was built, over 30 years ago, and he has joined us yet again in a new chapter for our library.  We know that the state will benefit from his wisdom and experience, just as we do!
Special thanks to Santa on joining us all the way from the North Pole, via Zoom, to share stories of his childhood and answer some pressing questions from the children of Jaffrey at this week's Storytime.
