Hey Martinez! Wanna get involved?

A common theme in my discussions with folks is their frustration with feeling like they are not aware of opportunities to be involved and provide input when decisions are made in the City of Martinez. Usually, there is a post on social media or a comment from a friend about “a public meeting last week” that elicits several comments like “Why do I never find out about these things?!?!”.  From my perspective from the dais (who am I kidding? From my home office computer screen via a Zoom meeting) there are many opportunities for citizens to be involved. And from my perspective, there are also many opportunities missed..

Check out these opportunities.

Pine Meadow Big News---over ¾ of an acre of usable flat park land added.

The Pine Meadow Settlement Agreement has been amended to include 35,000 sq. ft. (approx. ¾ of an acre) of additional usable flat land for park activities in the southwest corner of the park.  The developer will rough grade this area and provide a simple entry from Center Ave.  Also they will do a small amount of landscaping at the drainage basins and do rough grading of pathways between and around them.  Both of these actions will mean a good deal of additional usable park land for all of us.

More Good News---the Park and Rec Commission (PRMCC) has finished their park design review, and sent their recommendation on to the City Council for their review and approval.

The PRMCC approved Concept 1 with the addition of a pickleball court and moving some picnic tables to the new flat space and a few other changes. This includes a basketball court at the park.  Site grading is advancing, with the Small Open Space parcels and Pedestrian Connection pretty visible.  The park grading seems still in the beginning stages.

It’s exciting to see all this becoming real after so much effort from all of us.

Save The Jail: County Plans Ignore Citizen Input

On Wednesday night, Nov. 17th, the County revealed for the first time, to the citizens of Martinez and to the City Council, the details of their plans to demolish 2 historic jails as part of the plans for their new County Campus.

Beyond the demolition presented in the County’s animated video, they also revealed that food service, and a bit of County-only parking, would be provided in the new 651 Pine St. 3-story building, so County workers would never have to leave the Campus to go downtown.

There was also hardly any discussion regarding lost historic resources, other than saying a few bricks would be saved for part of the plaza and that there would be a story board.
There's a lot more to the story - click here to read the details.
