Letter from the President

The wait is over! The long winter and soggy spring are forgotten and have been replaced with an old-fashioned heat wave!

The 4th of July is now past, but our lake traffic has already increased. Just a reminder to everyone boating to be respectful of your neighbor and follow all boating regulations.

We have been blessed with a beautiful lake; a lake for pleasure boating, fishing, skiing and swimming. Your Dewart Lake Protective Association strives to keep Dewart Lake in the best possible condition for all of these activities. The association has recently partnered with the DNR and Aquatic Weed Control and completed another treatment for ridding us of the Eurasian Water Milfoil. Your dues, which are still among the lowest in many of our local lakes help pay for these treatments, as well as many other areas designed for optimum lake enjoyment.

By now you have seen our DLPA signs throughout our neighborhoods around Dewart Lake. If you haven't yet joined the association, we urge you to go to our website at: www.DewartLake.org for information and an application. You may also contact your specific Lane Director as shown in this newsletter.

Enjoy your summer! Have fun!

Phil “Chip” Wallstead

President, DLPA

Some Dewart Lake History

by Chip Wallstead

Jack Farren was 10 years old when his father bought a lot here at Dewart Lake. The lots at that time sold for between $300 and $500 each!! His father built their house from scratch while keeping their residency in Anderson, and came to the lake to fish. Years went by and Jack became a tool and die maker working at General Motors in Anderson.

Jack worked at GM for 40 years, retiring 25 years ago. He married Phyllis in 1955. This past July 9th, they celebrated 63 years of marriage! They raised two sons. One has since passed away, and the other lives in Anderson. The Farrens moved to Dewart Lake permanently in 1994, and reside in that same house his father built!

Jack remembers Elmer Vane, who owned the land we all know now as Vane's Point, where several homes were later built. He also recalls Redman's Park where a canning factory presided. That became our public landing!

Jack's aunt and uncle once lived at 183 EMS D23 (yours truly), and the house two doors west on the corner of D24.

Many of us see Jack every morning walking through our neighborhood – something he's done for 35 years! He and his wife do head south before winter comes and enjoy much better weather in Florida.  Let's all wish Jack and Phyllis a very happy 63rd anniversary!
