Giving Tuesday

In honor of Giving Tuesday, we would like to share an inspiring letter a 9114HNC Grantee Recipient and Head and Neck Cancer Survivor wrote about his experience.

Dear Friend I Have Yet to Meet,

You don’t know me, but I know you and what you did for me.

I was told I had Stage 3 Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma last year.  I immediately thought there had been a mistake.  The doctor assured me there had not been.  I left her office that day unsure of what was to come.

After a few weeks of radiation, I was physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted.  I had not grasped the depths of my head and neck cancer diagnosis.  I was not sure I could continue to endure it and will myself every morning back onto that cold radiation table.  I needed a sign.  I needed to know I was going to make it.  Know that my wife and I could one day revisit the plans we had been making for our life together.  Fulfill the promise to my students that I would be there for their graduations.

Then one day a nurse shared with me a brochure for 9114HNC and suggested I apply. I did and in a matter of days was contacted by Cookie Kerxton.  She shared with me that I had been selected and should expect a check over the coming days. I sighed in relief and disbelief.  The mountain of medical bills were coming in every day and seemed insurmountable.  This was the hope I needed and it helped me believe that someone out there cared as much about me winning this fight with cancer as I did.

Please make a contribution today to 9114HNC in the amount of $500 so patients with head and neck cancer know you care about them and that they are not alone.

Today, I am happy to share with you that my body is recovering well and the doctors have noted that my tumor is entirely gone. So many of us know either a friend or family member who has been diagnosed with cancer. However, when you become that friend or family member who is diagnosed with cancer, life takes on a whole new meaning. I am not the same man who walked into that doctor’s office a year ago.  I have discovered a greater sense of purpose that I didn't know existed inside of me.  Every morning, as I make plans for the day, I am grateful to you.  For the contribution you made so that I can see another day, hug my wife on my way to work, and see my students graduate.

Sincerely
9114HNC Grantee Recipient and Cancer Survivor
