Dear family and friends,

This year marks 13 years since my cancer diagnosis. I arrived at Inova Fairfax to begin radiation treatment not knowing what lay ahead. I laid down on a table, a mask, which had previously been molded to my head and chest, was placed on me and then was bolted to the table to keep me perfectly still while the rays were directed to my cancer. This was the routine for 5 weeks, Monday-Friday.

Fortunately, I had the finances and good health to survive the radiation treatment. That is not always the case. Some patients face a permanent loss of saliva, destroyed taste buds, digestive issues, and an inability to talk, eat or swallow. And, then if you toss in the cost of covering things like specialty foods, transportation, dental costs and meds not covered by insurance.

I started 9114HNC because I realized how truly lucky I was and became passionate about helping those less fortunate than I.

Helping countless patients and their families, together we have raised money and touched more lives than I had ever imagined. In 2022, with your help, we will continue to help patients with Head and Neck Cancer in financial need. 20 amazing artists will take head and neck cancer masks, previously used by patients, and turn them into one of a kind pieces of art that will be auctioned off at Courage Unmasked III on Saturday, March 5th at the Katzen Art Center.  Funds raised will bring more days of hope and inspiration for patients and their families.

My commitment to 9114HNC is to raise and disburse money to as many patients as possible. As founder of the organization, another goal is to raise public awareness of the critical needs of people undergoing treatment along with the increase in HNC due to HPV. Oral sex is not necessarily safe sex. It is with utmost gratitude that I say thank you again.  Let’s continue what we started and I hope to see you in March at Courage Unmasked III.

PS: Make a gift of any amount to 9114HNC today! YES, 9114HNC Fund is still 100% volunteer driven and that means your dollars go right to work so that no patient will ever have to choose between gas money or treatment and groceries.  Your gift today means that no choice will have to be made.

From Sam, a 9114HNC recipient:
“I have much to be thankful for.  At a time that we were wondering how we were going to meet our needs, your check arrived.  I lost both my voice and my hearing, but I have since partially recovered both.  I might recover my swallowing ability, but even if I don’t, I’ll survive.  I’m not giving up yet.”
