Lima: A Mission Possible

Lima is the fifth largest city in Latin America and the Caribbean and one of the 30 largest urban areas in the world. Only 1 of 10 people knows Jesus out of a population of nearly 10 million. According to studies, Lima has potential to become a global city in the category of New York, London, Tokyo, or Paris. If Lima were won for Jesus it would affect the whole world.

David and Ginegda Lopez are answers to prayer.

The goal of missions is to see churches established that will multiply disciples and groups, support themselves, and send out missionaries to other places. David and Ginegda’s home church has grown to be one of the largest Free Methodist churches in Latin America, planting many other churches and raising up many leaders. David and Ginegda have the full support of their pastor and congregation to go as missionaries to Peru.
Latin America Area leaders have dreamed of sending missionaries from one country to another. The conference where David is a ministerial member followed an excellent and thorough process, coached by the Area Director, to evaluate and approve them as international missionaries. David and Ginegda have the full support of their superintendent and conference. The Peru Mission District is eager to receive them.
However there is a lot of social and economic upheaval in David and Ginegda’s home country. People are going hungry and struggling to cover basic needs. Inflation is high and the currency is devalued. Even through sacrificial giving their sending church and conference can only give a token amount to their missionary support. Because of the political situation David and Ginegda cannot get a visa to come to the US and personally tell their story.
The harvest is ready. The workers are ready. Will you be part of this answer to prayer and continue the chain of missionary enterprise?

Dr. Delia Nüesch-Olver
Latin America Area Director, Free Methodist World Missions

Will you be part of this mission?
To support this project:

          Pray 'n' Praise

  • Praise. For every person who God has led to help us, giving us guidance and advice to develop this plan.
  • Prayer. For God to provide us a place to live and the right school for our kids in Lima.
  • Prayer. That God will prepare the hearts of our family  and strengthen them for the time we will be far from them.
  • Prayer. May God lead us the people of peace – the strategic people we will count on to begin new churches – and also those who will become our new friends and family in this big challenge for our family.

A story to tell, a goal to reach.

Our Calling

Since our youth, God has been dealing with our lives and calling us to missions. When we were dating, some people from different countries prayed for us, even bringing prophetic words about a missionary call outside of our country. Since we have been married, we have served the Lord in different areas of leadership in our local church in Maturin, called “To God be the Glory”. We have ministered there for seven years, leading children, teenagers, and youth ministries, as well serving as assistant pastor. In addition, for five years we lead an outreach to a poor community outside of our city where we planted a church with more than 60 adults and children.  During all this time the call to missions was a flame burning in our hearts.  We have taken youth groups on mission trips to Colombia on three occasions and also organized local mission trips annually. Through this we have been helping to awaken a missionary calling in our youth lives.

Our Family

We have been married for 13 years and have two children:  David Alejandro who is 8 years old and Valery Alejandra who is 6.  When we told our children about our plans, David Alejando responded, “Dad and Mom, if God sends us, we need to go.” We are also convinced that if God sends, we need to go, even though we will miss our families. Our hearts burn with our calling.  As a family we want to fulfill God’s purpose in our lives, and even though we don’t know where we will live, we know that our God has everything prepared.

Our Destination

In March 2016 God gave us the opportunity to travel to Peru and get to know the Peruvian church.  There we were able to see the need to help the leaders catch a vision for reaching their country for Christ.  Months before, we had received a letter of invitation from the leader of the Peruvian Free Methodist Church asking for our help for the next two years in the area of leadership training and church planting. This has been an answer from God to the flame that has been burning in our hearts.

Our Training and Plans

In May 2016 we received training from Bruce Bennett.  Bruce is the founder of C4J (Communities for Jesus) and the pioneer of the model called “Community Church Planting.”  This initiative has resulted in over 40,000 new churches in many countries since 2003. Many of those are Free Methodist churches.
Our vision is to start a training center in Lima, Peru following the community church planting model starting, in January 2017. We thank God for his grace in our lives and for putting it in the heart of Bruce Bennett to be our personal mentor for this plans.  Training centers are part of an strategy for explosive growth, created to multiply churches.  This strategy will be implemented with the hope that Lima will be a city that God can fill with His presence. Lima is the capital city of Peru, and one of the largest and most strategic cities in Latin America. If we reach Lima we will touch the world.
