Our True Voice: Separating Fear from Shame

We’re well into our autumn programmes and I’ve had such a time getting to know so many of our tribes. Whether at schools and community centres, at 5km challenges or out and about at events and volunteer fairs, I feel like I walk away a bit smarter and more conscious of how our young people navigate their worlds.

One story really got to me. A Mini Mermaid came up to me to tell me about a Siren moment that she had had. While at the top of a waterslide, she was so frightened that she didn’t go down it. Meanwhile, her younger cousin did.

I asked when she heard her Siren voice. 'When I was scared at the top,' she said. I wanted to explore this a bit more to understand what she meant. It’s ok to be scared; I needed to make sure she knew that. To be scared isn’t 'Siren'. It’s a natural instinct that’s valid and real.

After a bit more chatting, she told me how she felt after she didn’t go down the waterslide. She felt ‘annoyed and cross with myself and babyish because my younger cousin went down.’

Ok, that’s Siren.

We spent some time working through it. Her Mini Mermaid voice was actually the one at the top of the slide telling her that she wasn’t ready to go down and that it was ok, and probably pretty smart, to make that decision.

We all experience fears and worries. Sometimes though, I think we let being scared turn into shame for being afraid. In reality, being scared and worried is ok; it can take courage and strength to stand up and say ‘I’m not doing that because I am not comfortable with it and I am scared.’

This month, I wanted to share all the ways in which we’re growing, some our successes and how you’ve all helped. You’ve helped us create opportunities to have conversations like the one above and help a young girl, and many girls and boys like her, distinguish among a ton of emotions and understand their true voices.

As always, #highfins. You are an amazing tribe!

2018 5KM CHALLENGE UPDATE

On Saturday, 27 October, it was a bit of an epic day in Leeds, as we had our biggest challenge to date. 100 students from eight schools and community centres conquered the 5km challenges at Roundhay and Cross Flatts parkruns. Even as the first snow of the year started to fall, our Mini Mermaids and Young Tritons just kept moving, channeling their positive voice to help them through.

So far this autumn, we’ve conducted 16 challenges throughout the UK. Between now and December, another 25 tribes will take on their final challenges.

Just as impressive as all of these amazing Mini Mermaids and Young Tritons? The communities that come out to support them. When we hold our 5km challenges off school or community centre grounds (which we often can do, thanks to the wonderful parkrun organisation), we need each child under 11 paired with an adult. In addition providing the required safety, these wonderful volunteers act as cheerleaders, pacers, and often someone to have a right good chat with. As one of our recent volunteers told us:

“I had a fantastic time this morning with a brilliant young lady. It was an absolute pleasure to run with her. We had running, bikes, Guiding, velodrome dramas, brothers, love of marshmallows amongst many other things in common!  I honestly had one of my favourite parkrun’s ever. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity of running with such a brilliant girl and to remember that running is a beautiful thing for many, many reasons.”

Keep an eye on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for updates on the remaining challenges this year. Interested in volunteering at a challenge? Send us an email INFO@MINIMERMAIDUK.COM

Dawn 'Til Dusk  - HIGH FINS ALL AROUND!

What a day! 12 hours. More than 40 participants. Umpteen kilometres (that’s an official metric...honest).

On 29 September, our tribes more than met the Dawn Til Dusk Challenge in Leeds and London. What was that challenge? A continuous relay from sunrise to sunset, to raise funds to bring our Mini Mermaid and Young Tritons programmes to more areas in need across the UK.

Starting at 6:58 am in London and 7:04 am in Leeds, Mini Mermaids, Young Tritons, families, coaches, volunteers, friends and newly-made friends made sure our Mini Mermaid batons moved non-stop until the sun went down in both parks.  Exhausted? Check. Cold? Check. So pumped that we did it? CHECK!

Through your donations, children will discover the finish line is just the beginning to seeing what's possible in life. We raised more than £2600 and 100 percent of all net proceeds go to delivering Mini Mermaid and Young Triton programmes in the UK. Interested in donating? You still can by visiting here → Dawn Til Dusk. If you have a specific school or community to which you’d like your donation to go, just include a note.

Your 'digital contributions' also make an impact. We’d love help spreading the word about our programmes and events on social media. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter - we’d love to hear from you.

From our team - THANK YOU!

TEAM LONDON AWARDS

Since starting in 2016, our London programme has grown, under the leadership of Khara Mills. Earlier this month, we were short-listed for the Mayor of London's TEAM LONDON AWARD 2018! How awesome is that?

The award "celebrates the individuals, teams and corporate volunteers who are making outstanding contributions to their communities and helping to make London the best city it can be." I think that sounds a lot like what we do.

While we didn’t end up winning, we shed a few tears seeing the work from both nominated and winning organisations. Yeah, and we felt pretty chuffed over the calibre of the company we keep. Most importantly, this nomination ONLY happened through the inspiring work of Khara, our volunteer coaches, the schools and community centres and the Mama and Papa Mermaids. HIGH FINS to each and every one of you!

NEW PROGRAMME SPOLIGHT!

We’ve made it to Wales! Under the guidance of the brilliant Sophie Walton, a student physiotherapist studying at Cardiff University, our tribe of Mini Mermaids at All Saints C/W Primary in Cardiff are into the thick of Curriculum 1.

“I wanted to be part of the Mini Mermaid movement as it is exactly what I wish had been around for me and my friends when we were younger. Giving girls confidence and a healthy relationship with their mind and bodies is something I am so passionate about. I’m so excited to be part of the first Mini Mermaid tribe in Wales!”

Welcome to the tribe, Wales!

Mini Mermaids at All Saints C/W Primary create recipe cards as part of their service project. In our curriculum, we work with girls to explore and understand their ability to help others. #hands
Baby, It's Cold Outside

After our gorgeous summer, autumn’s brought us back to weather reality - fast. The shorter days and darker nights can mean only one thing - the holidays are approaching fast!

Did you know that we have a full store on the Mini Mermaid site, chock full of high quality gear? Hoodies, tights, socks, t-shirts and our fabulous Mini Mermaid mug for that warm cuppa on a chilly morning.

Best part - 100% of profits will go towards the continued delivery and development of the Mini Mermaid and Young Triton programmes.

This is the very dull bit...
