Happy Lucia!

Today, December 13, it’s Lucia Day! The Lucia tradition is an old tradition that, alongside Midsummer, represents one of the foremost cultural traditions in Sweden.

Lucia is the bearer of light, and the celebrations reference life in the peasant communities of old: darkness and light, cold and warmth. The Lucia tradition includes an annual candlelit Lucia procession, dressed in white full-length gowns singing Lucia songs.

Additionally, the celebrations often include lussekatter (saffron-flavored buns), and glögg (Swedish mulled wine). If you want to watch this year’s traditional Lucia procession, click here. For more information, click here.

“My expectations before I came to Amsterdam were to stimulate the Trade and Business relations between the Netherlands and Sweden. So far, I think I have exceeded my expectations and have added value to our members of the Swedish Chamber, but meanwhile, I have developed my professional skills as well.”

Stefan de Goede, Scholarship Fund for Swedish Youth Abroad 2021-2022

“I love that you, at an early stage, were given a lot of freedom and responsibility to take on your own projects with the support and help from the rest of the team. This has given me the opportunity to put my theoretical knowledge to the test and apply it in real situations, which have both contributed positively to the Swedish Chamber of Commerce as well as to my personal development.”

Johanna Lindén, Gull & Stellan Ljungbergs Stiftelse 2021-2022

Both Johanna and Stefan are spending one year at the Swedish Chamber of Commerce. They are very grateful that Gull & Stellan Ljungbergs Foundation and Scholarship Fund for Swedish Youth Abroad have given them this opportunity and would encourage anyone interested to apply for this Scholarship!

Dutch and Nordic Circular Hotspots signed a Partnership Agreement

On November 11, the Holland Circular Hotspot and Nordic Circular Hotspot formally signed a Partnership Agreement as part of the three-day state visit of the Dutch royal couple to Norway. The Signing Ceremony took place in Trondheim in the company of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima as well as His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon Magnus and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

This new co-operation aims to speed up the market transition for circular solutions and businesses in and between The Netherlands and the Nordics.  The two Hotspots have worked closely together, since the Nordic Circular Hotspot was launched during the World Circular Economy Forum in Helsinki in June 2019. The formation of the Nordic Circular Hotspot was influenced by the Holland Circular Hotspot and now it was finally time to formalize this partnership.

“Signing a partnership with the Nordic Circular Hotspot comes at a moment that the world realises that it needs circularity more than ever. This is the century for circular entrepreneurs and frontrunners to have the biggest market potential.” – Freek van Eijk, Director Holland Circular Hotspot

December 10, Nobel Prize Day

On December 10, it was the Nobel Prize Day, where award ceremonies took place to award the Nobel Prize winners. The Nobel Prize is awarded to ‘those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind’ and the prize is considered the most prestigious award in the world in its field. Since 1901, prizes have been awarded in physics, chemistry, physiology, or medicine. Literature and peace have been awarded since 1901, and economic sciences since 1968.

Due to the current situation, Nobel Week was staged as a digital event, where award ceremonies and lectures were held online since the usual banquets in Stockholm and Oslo were canceled. Additionally, Stadshuset Nobel Week Lights took place in Stockholm for the second year during the Nobel Week. Inspired by Nobel Prize-awarded discoveries and laureates, stunning artworks were lightening up the darkness this December. In the picture, we see “EARTH FROM SPACE”, by the artist Andreas Skärberg.

IKEA releases interactive circular product design tool to inspire, engage and accelerate the circular movement

IKEA has released an online interactive circular product design tool to inspire, engage and accelerate the movement towards a circular economy. IKEA is on the journey to design all products with built-in circular capabilities by 2030, and by sharing their methodology and insights, they hope to engage other designers to do the same. After assessing over 9,500 products, their insights and methodology have altogether been summarized into the circular blueprint and are shared through an online interactive tool.

When using the tool, users can measure different product types for their circular capabilities. This is done by answering questions about the different aspects of circular design and at the end, the user receives an approximate score for how circular their product is.

The Netherlands and Sweden were both among the top five countries with the highest capital investments in the past year, which highlights the countries dominance on the European startup scene.

Europe is firmly positioned as a global tech player in 2021, with a record $100B of capital invested, 98 new unicorns, and the strongest ever startup pipeline, now on par with the US. European tech is creating value at its fastest pace, adding $1 trillion in just 8 months. While geographical differences in maturity level remain, talent mobility and distributed success is powering newer hubs.”

The rate of inflation in the Netherlands hit in November its highest level since 1982

The rate of inflation in the Netherlands has in November hit its highest level since 1982, now corresponding to 5.2%. This can be compared to October, where the rate of inflation was 3.4%.vThis follows the same pattern as the increased average eurozone inflation that in November went up from 4.1% to 4.9%.

According to CBS, soaring gas and electricity prices are responsible for two percentage points of the annual increase. Additionally, higher fuel costs and the price of food and clothes also had an impact.
