Urgent + Whimsical
I came across the score of Maniac while letting Spotify run free to finding tracks that have a similar DNA (whatever that means) to Daniel Pemberton's 'Visions Brooklyn 1, 2, 3' and after going through a lot of big cinematic sounds by clicking refresh...I eventually came across 'Out Of Nothing, Everything' which is the first track of Dan Romer's score for the opening season.
I don't think I'd been paying attention to the score (or I might have had the volume down), but now...listening to it by itself, it's surprising. Though it does follow the tone of the show: ominous (though isn't it part of the bulk of Science Fiction titles?) with sprinkles of whimsy.
Initially, I thought it was the layers of Marimba and Vibes that were the centre of the sound design, but once I got to track #4 (Owen), I realised that it was the cello that was the star. And yes, I did think that the cello kind of represented Owen Milgrim (played by Jonah Hill), the protagonist.
Notables:
- Track #1 - Out of Nothing, Everything
- Track #2 - Annie
- Track #3 - Lost Without Connection
- Track #9 - Describe Your Emotional State
- Track #11 - We're Gonna Get You Out of Here
If there's someone I'd be keen on to hear do the next Marvel title it's Dan Romer.
As for the show itself, I actually came across it in script form. Upon reading it, I was intrigued enough (it didn't help that there weren't any more scripts ---- wouldn't that be great!?), and when I got a chance to watch the season, a number of episodes in made me realise that this is the sort of show that I would enjoy more hearing from someone who is more of a target psychographic compared to me.
How about you? Are there specific 'urgent yet whimsical' combinations that come to mind? :)
