There are specific F-1 and J-1 regulations regarding employment eligibility and options for international students. If you are looking for an internship or work – whether paid, unpaid, in-person or remote – you must ensure that you are eligible to work off-campus and correctly obtain employment authorization.
For details, please review these sections of the ISSS website:
**Working without prior authorization is a serious immigration violation. You must obtain employment authorization before beginning your job or internship, including any related orientation or training.**
The U.S. Department of Labor and Department of Homeland Security have rules regarding what constitutes an unpaid internship or work opportunity; therefore, many unpaid positions are not considered appropriate for international students who have not secured off-campus work authorization. Remote work opportunities require work authorization as well.
If you have questions regarding work authorization after reviewing the information on our website, we suggest that you meet with an ISSS advisor. ISSS advising appointments can be scheduled at here.
