Pastor Nikki's Notions
Dear Friends,
This year, Lent begins on Wednesday, March 6. Lent is a time of the year that is well known for its somberness, as well as a time of fasting. And so many Christians deny themselves during this time; they may give up their favorite snacks, or do away with whatever other luxuries they commit themselves to fasting from during the season of Lent. Some of the more popular Lenten fasts include things like sweets or chocolate or alcohol or television time. But the truth is that there is much more to Lent that meets the eye. Lent is a time for us to draw close to God and offers us many blessings. These blessings are summed up well by William Arthur Ward, entitled “Fasting and Feasting. In it, he reminds us that, yes, Lent is a time to fast from certain things. But he also tells us that it's a time to feast on other things. He writes that Lent is a time to:
- "Fast from judging others; feast on Christ living in them.
- Fast from emphasis on differences; feast on the unity of all life.
- Fast from apparent darkness; feast on the reality of light.
- Fast from thoughts of illness; feast on the healing power of God.
- Fast from words that pollute; feast on phrases that purify.
- Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude.
- Fast from anger; feast on patience.
- Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism.
- Fast from worry; feast on appreciation.
- Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation.
- Fast from negatives; feast on affirmatives.
- Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast on unceasing prayer.
- Fast from hostility; feast on non-resistance.
- Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.
- Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others.
- Fast from personal anxiety; feast on eternal hope through Jesus.
- Fast from discouragement; feast on hope.
- Fast from lethargy; feast on enthusiasm.
- Fast from suspicions; feast on truth.
- Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence.
- Fast from thoughts of weakness; feast on promises that inspire.
- Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that undergirds.
- Fast from everything that separates us from the Lord; feast on everything that draws us to the Lord."
Friends, in everything we do this Lenten season, let us remember the point of it all: to draw closer to Jesus. May we follow these fasts and feasts in order to become more like him whose life we are called to imitate.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Nikki

Lenten Adult Education Opportunity
The season of Lent is a great time to think about why and how we pray. Therefore, Pastor Nikki has planned an Adult Education series which focuses on the Lord’s Prayer, and breaks it down line by line in order to truly understand what it is that Jesus taught us to pray. No materials are needed for this class, but please come with an open mind and a willingness to share your thoughts and feelings. Because study begins at 6, everyone is invited to bring a dinner with them so we can eat together as we study God’s Word. Studies will be held on Thursday evenings at 6 P.M., beginning on March 14 and lasting through April 11

A Conversation About Sex Trafficking in Our Community
Human Sex Trafficking is big business for organized crime and for local pimps. Its one of those crimes that is hidden in plain sight. Meaning, most of the victims go to school, church and live in stable homes. It`s hard to see they are even a victim. Research shows that the average age of recruitment into the commercial sex industry is 12-14 years old and that victims come from every race, gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic background.
Delafield Presbyterian Church is sponsoring an event on March 19th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Saint Anthony's on the Lake in Pewaukee. There, you can learn how youth and adults are being coerced into slavery, why they can't see their way out and how we can keep our families safe. You'll hear from survivor of trafficking and nationally known author and speaker, Theresa Flores, as well as a panel of local officials who are experts on this topic and will be able tell us about exactly what human trafficking looks like in Waukesha County,

Volunteers Needed!
Have you or someone you love been impacted by suicide? Is mental health a topic that you wish was more broadly discussed in church? Are you gifted in organizing events? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should consider helping Pastor Nikki to plan to bring Soul Shop Anti-Suicide Training for clergy and lay leaders to the Milwaukee area. Soul Shop will be coming to Delafield Presbyterian Church on March 28th to do a day-long training with faith leaders from all over the Milwaukee area. Pastor Nikki is looking for assistance with event registration, hospitality, publicity and set-up and tear-down for the event. If you’re interested in helping out, email Pastor Nikki at PastorNikkiDPC@gmail.com

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
Delafield Presbyterian Church
24th Annual Fish Fry, Silent Auction, 50/50 Raffle and Bake Sale
April 26, 2019
4:30-8:00
DPC's Annual Fish Fry & Auction is fast approaching. The date is April 26 and once again our venue is Western Lakes Golf Club. This is our church's largest fundraiser and we need everyone's help to make it a success. More detailed information will follow but we will need more help the night of the event in all areas including set-up, serving food, helping with the bake sale, auction, and selling raffle tickets.
In addition, we're asking all of you to think how you may be able to help make the auction a bigger event. Many of you have donated wonderful items in the past and that's great,m but we need more participation and want to increase donations from local businesses. Do you have a favorite restaurant or merchant that would donate a gift certificate, merchandise, tickets to a game or concert? Do you know an artist who would donate a piece of art? How about a round of golf for a foursome? Someone already has donated a cabin up north for a long weekend. In addition, again this year we have a boat ride and cocktail cruise for 10 that has been donated. Be creative and try to make it fun!! Please see if you can find a way to contribute. Also, please be ready to bid! We will keep you advised as auction items come in.
Please contact Doug Lurvey (dougl@wi.rr.com) or Brenda O'Connor (oconnorb8319@gmail.com) with your auction item or if you have any questions.
Thanks and remember, time flies!
