March is upon us and we have so many great things going on already this year. Want to get involved? Check out our volunteer opportunities: volunteer or come to our next Love Your Beach Clean event
This March welcomes the 31st annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival, where you can immerse yourself in all the fun and excitement Surfrider Pacific Rim is bringing to this time of the year. Join Surfrider in your favourite wetsuit attire for the festival opening at the Parade of Whales and Wonders on Saturday March 11th from 10:15 am - 10:45 am. Afterwards, hit the beach with us for the Tug-O-Whale beach clean on Saturday March 11th from 1 PM to 4 PM at Wickaninnish Beach. Support the Love Your Beach Clean program and simultaneously honour the whales by learning about microplastics as well as reducing plastics and other debris on the beach.
You can also take part in Surfrider’s Stitch ‘n’ Beach event that is part of the Bring Your Own Bag Challenge. This event will be happening every Saturday at the Tourism Tofino Office from 10 AM to 1 PM. You can also join in the final stitch day on Friday, March 24th from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Royal Canadian Legion. This is a community challenge to create 1000 reusable bags that will be given out at the Tofino Co-op Grocery Store to reduce plastic bag consumption!
Our final event cannot be missed!! To keep the inspiration flowing we are screening the acclaimed documentary A Plastic Ocean at the Royal Canadian Legion on Friday March 24th. Door open at 4:30 PM, film starts at 5 PM, and at 7 PM there will be a panel discussion. Come, watch, and participate in the dialogue that will be expanding this film’s vital message on ocean health and plastics.
HOLD ONTO YOUR BUTTS TOFINO! This month Surfrider is excited to announce the welcoming of the Hold Onto Your Butt Campaign. Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world, which leaches chemicals into the water, pollutes the beaches and coastlines, and becomes ingested by sea life. This campaign will prevent cigarette pollution by providing cigarette butt canisters where people can responsibly dispose of their butt, which will be recycled through TerraCycle. The champions leading the first installation of cigarette butt canisters in Tofino include the District of Tofino with canisters at their office, 1st street dock, Village Green and Tonquin Beach, Wolf in the Fog, the Royal Canadian Legion, Wickanninnish Inn who are also sponsoring canisters at North and South Chestermans. Shout out to Ucluelet, this town already has Surfrider cigarette canisters and have smoking restrictions in place which has significantly reduced cigarette pollution! Big thanks to Public Works for their help to install and empty them, as well as TerraCycle who will be recycling the butts at http://www.terracycle.ca/en-CA/ !
Get in touch for more details on how to purchase a canister for your business, let’s eliminate butts off the beach!
The Love Your Beach Clean program continues to flourish in the New Year! Surfrider’s last beach clean up took place on Tonquin Beach on February 14th, this ‘Valentides’ cleanup collected 55 kg in weight, with the top five offenders including styrofoam, recyclables, plastic, cigarette butts and fishing gear.
