Surfrider Pacific Rim celebrate the successes of 2016! Check out some of the highlights!

The Surfrider Pacific Rim Chapter is rejuvenated!!! Tons of recognition from the community, TFN, District, Mayor, media and Surfrider HQ, on the amazing work everyone is doing! 

Surfrider hosted & supported 26 beach cleans & beach events!! Approximately 5000kg of marine debris collected. 

March - 'Tidelines' film night is a sellout! Raised funds from a silent auction and raised awareness on single use plastics.

April - STRAWS SUCK Campaign successfully convinced all of Tofino to eliminate plastic straws. Straws interview with Long Beach Lodge and Surfrider reached over 9 million hits across media sites https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR89EyIlYuQ

May - Surfrider presents Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES) 12 class program to the Ucluelet High School's Nuh Chah Nulth class. Students cleaned up local beaches, learned about marine debris, discussed solutions and made an art piece now displayed in the Ucluelet Aquarium called 'Trash to Treasure - Kelp Ecosystem'

May - Surfrider volunteers do emergency clean up on Florencia Bay when a shipwreck washes up. Surfrider demand more support from government for coastal clean ups.

August -  Canadian junior surf team clean Wickaninnish beach, Surfrider make a donation for their surf trip to Portugal.

Karla Robison from District of Ucluelet and Surfrider ambassador organizes a month long clean up of the Broken Group Islands removing 12-15 tonnes. The Gar-barge entire project removed a total of over 40 tonnes of marine debris by boat, helicopter and barge, from Vancouver Island!

Surfrider Pacific Rim volunteers take part in the clean up & PRNPR collaborate with Surfrider and clean up Radar point locations using helicopter and collect over 16 supersacks of marine debris. 

September – Work begins for the Ocean Friendly Business Campaign planning to eliminate single use plastics as well as the Hold On To Your Butt campaign planning for the elimination of cigarette butt waste. 

October - Surfrider short film fest hosted by Cedarwood Cove is complete sell out, raising $1.3k for new film equipment. Surfrider partners with SUGA and helps facilitate a wetsuit recycling program for Pacific Rim, turning wetsuits into yoga mats. Surf sisters, Pacific Surf, Relic & Long beach all sign up. Surfrider put pressure on council to deny permit for Cox Bay development Parkbridge rezoning. Council independently decide to deny the rezoning application

November - Wickaninnish Inn host Surfrider monthly Executive Committee meetings & Tofino Brewery host Surfrider monthly Public meet ups. Shipping container spill Hanjin receives global media. Surfrider and PRNP organize 22km clean from Schooner Cove to Combers beach collecting 950kg of debris. 

December - BRING YOUR OWN BAG campaign and Pacific Surf jingle events promote bring your own bag and Santa jingle event fundraiser & Jamie's Whaling Station become official sponsor for 'Love Your Beach Clean' program donating $14.6k for 2017 beach clean ups, including remote clean ups and education. 

Surfrider Pacific Rim gets a website!!! Presently putting the final touches on the site www.pacificrim.surfrider.org, and will be up and ready for viewing very soon!

Multiple donations and sponsors from the local community all year round! Surfrider Pacific Rim popularity and visibility increases with huge support from local journalists & writers, local newspaper Westerly News, Tofino Times, CBC, Tuff City radio, Victoria cfax, Chek news, Huffington post, Global mail and more! Multiple partners and collaborations! VOLUNTEERS INCREASED!! 

2017 was kicked off with POLAR BEAR SWIM and clean up with approximately 100 swimmers, collecting 50kg of marine debris from North Chesterman beach. Love Your Beach Clean! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1upXm9S3-rA
