Hairpin Turns

“Everyone has a plan ‘til they get punched in the mouth” - Mike Tyson

Have you ever found yourself cruising along towards a place and suddenly the GPS tells you to make a hairpin turn? It doesn’t feel right and slightly off kilter and your “human compass” begins to question the wisdom of something other than your gut! It feels like you’re going backwards and definitely not towards your destination. If you’ve ever traveled on the road to Lake Tahoe you’d understand - there are sharp turns when you least expect them and the only one way to get there. It’s curve after curve that wasn’t part of the plan. Sure, you’re able to handle a gentle jog but a hairpin turn? – that requires rewiring your brain!

If you’re in the ring and someone delivers the proverbial Haymaker, there’s not much you can do outside of trying to rise before the count is up but most likely you’re rendered to listening to tweeting birds. Later, you make a pact with yourself to never go through that again and do everything in your power to avoid any hint of it. Or, you learn to look for it and duck the next time! It’s what you do with what you know that determines who you’ll become.

If you break your arm, either you recover and train to be stronger or you find a way to impart what you know to someone else to help them be better. If your new job involves moving away, you either find the things you love in your new location or you fly home every weekend (good luck with that!) The bottom line is you learn to adapt – sometimes you rearrange your priorities for a while and sometimes for the rest of your life. One of John Lennon’s famous quotes is, “Life is what happens to you while making other plans.” For a while, I thought cooking was going to be my forte because I owned restaurants. But, there were so many facets of the food industry and because I enjoyed writing and photography, I wrote food columns and photographed the dishes. It didn’t change my love of food; it just gave me a different perspective and direction.

It’s been proven that when people reflect on their life’s history, they are usually pleased at the way it turned out - including speed bumps, hairpin turns and hiccups along the way. They revealed that they appreciated their destiny more and felt it was far richer. They believed they had a better chance of achieving their dream aspirations because of the chance to value what truly mattered once they had time to assess where they truly wanted to go. Some have said they met the love of their life and people that ultimately influenced their lives when they stopped to ask for directions!

Life is a little like that sometimes - you chart your course, the sails are up and suddenly something rocks your boat. And, instead of enjoying the serenity of a smooth horizon, you’re toss all about. This isn’t the time to jump overboard and abandon the ship! This is when you buckle down, batten the hatches and prepare for a bumpy ride. The term ‘adventure’ doesn’t come into play at that moment. Hairpin turns are like that – you can’t see them coming until you’re on top of them but, oh what a ride when you look back!

All-Star Boxing Postponed

The All-Star Boxing event scheduled for November 10, 2018 at the Portland Expo has been postponed due to injuries. Pro super welterweight Casey Kramlich was in a serious work accident on August 1, 2018. The claw of a logging truck ended up around his thigh and crushed his femur, near his patella. Pro middleweight Jason Quirk was suffered an injury to his back while at work for the Portland Fire Department. His back is being monitored by doctors to determine if surgery will be required.

Portland Boxing Club strives to put on a high-quality event with as much local talent as possible. Without both of these boxers, we did not feel that sponsors and fans would get the value they have come to expect from our events. We are working with the Portland Expo to reschedule the event and expect to be having this All-Star Boxing event in the spring. The new date will be communicated once it is finalized.
