SDM Reopening Plans

While we are beginning to plan for our reopening, we do not have a reopening date for clients yet.

Limited staff is working in the shop each day, with the remainder working from home. We are keeping extended daily hours including Saturdays at this time. We answer the phone, emails, and voice messages whenever we are available. Please call our shop phone, and if we are not able to answer, leave a message.

We have been keeping a list of clients to call with the reopening information, and if you asked to be on that list we will be contacting you over the coming weeks. If you would like to be added, please let us know. We will also send out a notice to anyone who gets our newsletter as soon as we have firmer details. When we first begin to reopen to clients, it will be exclusively for people who are unable to receive help remotely. This newsletter covers the plans we are putting in place now to keep both our staff and clients safe.

Keeping Up to Date

As the State begins to reopen, keeping up to date with the latest community news is important. For our local Melrose community, regular up dates are being posted on the City of Melrose Covid website

Reopening

Keeping Staff Safe

Massachusetts is reopening offices and stores after the COVID-19 shutdowns. SDM is now beginning the process of reopening the shop while making sure we are keeping staff safe. Here is an explanation of what we are doing, and why.

The days of a full shop buzzing with activity are behind us. The new normal brings with it social distancing, hand-washing, and a renewed sense of what constitutes safety. The SDM Shop at 465 Main Street in Melrose MA is open to limited staff and we want to make sure we all know what to expect.

Following the Guidelines
SDM will follow all state and federal guidelines for keeping staff safe as outlined here. Keeping a safe distance between people, wearing masks, washing hands and surfaces, and not touching faces are the main methods of ensuring safety. The changes we will instigate for keeping staff safe fall into general categories:

Changes in the Shop
  • The front door will be kept locked in order to monitor who comes into the shop.
  • We will clean all table and counter surfaces, equipment in use, doorknobs, light switches, etc. multiple times during the day, and at the end of the day.
  • Each staff member is responsible for cleaning the equipment they use during the day. This will be done immediately after they are done with it and before it is put it away.
  • Hands will be washed before and after each client, upon entering the building, and at other times during the day as needed.
  • The phone will be assigned to one primary person each day. If needed by anyone else, it must be cleaned before and after.
  • We will minimize the handling of equipment by more than one staff member each day.
  • Any equipment, both SDM’s and the staff’s, that is brought into the shop will be cleaned immediately upon entrance of the shop.
  • We will move furniture to aid social distancing and assist with cleaning.
  • No shared food or drinks.

The shop has been reconfigured to provide fewer work stations that are further apart. There is no seating area in the front area of the shop.

Keeping Distance
In order to maintain a safe distance and reduced occupancy, the following rules will be in place.
  • Maximum staff in shop will be 2 to start.
  • Other staff members will continue to work from home and provide assistance remotely.
  • Staff should maintain a minimum distance of 6 feet from each other, and from clients whenever possible.
  • Everyone in the shop must have a mask with them at all times (see details below)
  • Staff is expected to wash hands regularly with soap. Hands-free soap dispensers are located at the sinks.
Masks and Equipment
  • Everyone in the shop must have a mask with them at all times.
  • Masks must be clean at the start of each day.
  • Staff may use their own masks, or they may use one of the SDM provided washable masks.
  • When meeting with a client, a mask will be worn at all times by both people.
  • Face shields will be provided for staff who choose to wear one in addition to a mask.
  • When walking around the shop, a mask must be worn
  • If there are more than 3 people in the shop, masks must be worn at all times
  • When there are 1 - 3 staff in the shop and no clients, and all staff are working at a distance of at least 10 feet, and not moving around the shop, then masks can be removed.
  • Staff can work or take a break in the basement without a mask (1 staff member at a time).
  • Gloves will be made available but they are not required. Hand washing is the preferred method.
  • Gloves can be used when cleaning, or when handling client equipment.
Health
  1. Overall healthanyone with a fever of 100+, a cough, sore throat, or any other symptoms that indicate sickness, will be required to stay home until all symptoms have been resolved for a minimum of 2 days without medication.
  2. Staff members are encouraged to take their temperature before leaving home each day. A hands-free thermometer will be available at the shop.
  3. If a staff member tests positive for Coronavirus, the shop will close for a minimum of two weeks.
  4. Staff are encouraged to be tested for the virus and/or antibodies if a test is made available to them
We hope these guidelines show that we at SDM are taking our staff and our client's health very seriously. If you have questions or concerns about how we are keeping staff safe, please contact us. Thank you.

Reopening

Keeping Clients Safe

Alongside developing our processes to keep our staff safe, we are also making sure we can keep clients safe. Here is an explanation of what we are doing, and why.

The SDM Shop at 465 Main Street in Melrose will likely be opening to clients on a limited basis in the next few weeks and we want to make sure everyone knows what to expect.

Following the Guidelines
As listed in our section above on staff safety, we will be following state and federal guidelines. Also, as stated in this section, keeping a distance between people, wearing masks, washing hands and surfaces, and not touching faces are the main methods of ensuring safety.

The additional procedures we will follow at the SDM Shop that will allow us to be safe with clients, are as follows:

Keeping Distance
In order to maintain a safe distance and reduced occupancy, the following rules will be in place.
  • No drop-ins will be allowed.
  • Where possible, appointments will be accomplished remotely via email, phone, and video.
  • In-shop appointments will be allowed for issues that are particularly difficult to handle using distance methods, or for clients who have trouble accessing distance methods.
  • Clients will NOT be able to request a specific staff member. Our schedule will be in flux and we will not be able to determine when each staff member will be available. If a client requires a particular staff member, then that appointment must be remote.
  • Clients will not be allowed to walk around the shop.
  • We strongly discourage the use of the bathroom by clients.
  • There will be no extra seating. Clients will arrive and depart on time and alone.
Cleanliness
  • Clients will be expected to use the sanitizer station at the front door of the shop upon arrival.
  • Staff will not handle client devices unless it is absolutely necessary and will clean the equipment and wash their hands before and after.
  • Special care will be taken to clean SDM devices that will be handled by clients both before and after use.
  • SDM staff always discourage gifts, but especially during this time, we cannot accept any gifts including money, gift cards, food, and drinks.
Health
  • Clients must wear masks at all times.
  • In the event the client has a medical limitation on wearing a mask, we will attempt to provide our service using remote methods. If that proves impossible and an in-shop appointment is made, then the staff will maintain a minimum of 8‘ distance from the client. There will be no exception to this rule.
  • All staff will wear masks when clients are in the shop.
  • If clients arrive without a mask, or with a mask of questionable cleanliness, they will be given a disposable mask.
  • The client's temperature will be taken upon entry to the shop using a touchless thermometer.
  • Overall health anyone with a fever of 100+, a cough, sore throat, or other symptoms that indicate sickness, will be required to stay home.
  • Clients who have been in close proximity to anyone who has exhibited these symptoms are asked to refrain from coming to the SDM shop until at least 14 days after exposure.
We hope these guidelines show that we at SDM are taking our staff and our client's health very seriously. If you have questions or concerns about how we are keeping clients safe, please contact us. Thank you.

Online Video Lessons

Summer Classes for Kids

SDM is offering small group video lessons in July and August. Please check our online calendar to see what we offer and to register. Some are single day, one-hour lessons, and others are multi-day one-hour lessons.

All students are expected to attend all days of the multi-day lessons. If that is not possible, please consider scheduling one on one appointments instead.

SDM has added some collaborative lessons this summer, which we are very excited about. Please let us know what you think, and what other lessons you are looking for.

As each lesson will use different examples, students may register for more than one lesson on the same topic. The Collaborative Drawing lesson, for example, will use different base drawings each time, and the group of children participating will also change.

Most lessons will be held using the Zoom video conferencing software. Please contact SDM for help setting Zoom up on your device before your lesson begins. Zoom is free. Ages are flexible and intended to ensure a similar interest and attention level, and knowledge of core concepts.

Please read the description carefully to determine the correct level for your child. Students may also make one on one appointments to work with an associate to learn any topic of their choosing.

Registration is required and all lessons are limited to 4 students
