On September 27, the Trump administration announced that it would set the refugee resettlement cap at 45,000 people for the next year—the lowest ever in our nation’s history.
But 45,000 is not a fixed number. Congress has the opportunity to push back on this historically low figure and demand a higher resettlement goal. Our average goal since 1980 has been 90,000 refugees; refugee resettlement agencies and faith-based organizations around the country are asking for a minimum goal of 75,000 for the next year. The Bible calls us to defend the cause of the vulnerable--this moment is an opportunity to live into this call.
If you haven’t yet done so today, will you take action and contact your Members of Congress? Our representatives and senators need to hear that we welcome refugees.
Contact your Members of Congress and ask them to advocate for welcoming 75,000 lives!
