Tell Congress to Support, Not Undermine Peace Between Israelis and Palestinians!
In December, the US abstained from a vote on the United Nations’ Security Council Resolution 2334. The resolution called for a halt to Israel’s settlement building activity in occupied Palestinian territory. Congress has taken steps to push back against the U.S.’s action on this resolution, one that is in keeping with U.S. policy on Israeli settlements, by passing a resolution objecting to the UNSC resolution in both the House and the Senate.
UNSC 2334 reaffirms that Israeli settlements are a violation of international law and an obstacle to peace. It calls on Israel to cease all settlement building in occupied Palestinian territory, and pushes for immediate action to prevent all acts of violence against civilians. It also encourages increased efforts to come up with “comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.” The US abstention from this vote allowed the resolution to be passed unanimously by the other 14 members of the Security Council.
