Join us in prayer as we grieve alongside of our sisters and brothers after the recent attack on Coptic Christians in Egypt.
On Friday, May 26, gunmen attacked a group of Coptic Christians who were traveling to a monastery in southern Egypt, killing at least 26 people and wounding 25 others. Those killed include children and older adults. At this time, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. This violence comes at a time of increased religious persecution against Christians in Egypt. Since December, about 70 Christians have been killed in bombings claimed by the Islamic State at churches in Cairo, Alexandria, and Tanta. In February, a small Christian community in Sinai fled their town after a series of gun attacks on homes and businesses.
For our sisters and brothers in Egypt, we lift our fervent prayers. We acknowledge and give thanks that you know all who suffer in your name.
We pray for those in Egypt who are now living in fear for their lives. Protect them. Help them to remain strong in faith and trust. Give them the strength to forgive. May their testimony be a fruitful witness to others.
We pray for all who are grieving the loss of their loved ones; comfort and strengthen them with your Spirit. May they find rest in you and remain full of faith and hope.
We pray for those who persecute your people; may their hearts be turned towards you through the faithful witness of those they persecute.
Almighty God, help us to be mindful of our sisters and brothers around the world that need us to stand with them as they suffer in your name. Teach us to respond to the needs of your church – your body – quickly and courageously. We pray for an end to terrorism and suffering. Rescue your Church. Come, Lord Jesus.
