June PTA Meeting Recap
The last PTA General Meeting of the year was held on May 21st, and included the PTA's annual budget vote to determine the PTA budget plan for the 2019-2020 school year.

Of the 57 voting members in attendance, 52 ballots were cast, and 49 members voted in support of Budget Option #1:

  • Funding one full-time certificated classroom support teacher
  • One full-time instructional assistant OR half-time certificated support teacher
  • Library lunch program
  • Vocal instruction
  • All the other programs/activities outlined on the full PTA budget plan

During deliberations, there was an amendment to change the ballot language where 'classroom teacher' was changed to 'certificated classroom support teacher'. Membership voted to approve this change to the ballot language (a 'certificated classroom support teacher’ is a teacher who will not lead their own classroom, but would be supporting other classroom teachers).

Dr. Fitch and other school staff were present at the meeting and informed PTA members there would be grade splits in the upper grades.  Based on current enrollment projections, the tentative grade splits would be one 3/4 split and two 4/5 split classrooms next year.

The additional academic support funded by the PTA budget will support these split classrooms.

Thank you for being engaged and supportive of PTA, Stevens staff, teachers, and students!  We really appreciate all the generous support you give every year to help make Stevens a great community!

With gratitude,
Jenn Edrosa and Dara Ayres
Stevens PTA Co-Presidents

School News

Instrumental Music Concert, June 6
Instrumental music students at Stevens will be involved in an assembly and a concert at the school, on Thursday, June 6th. The assembly will be at 1:15 pm with the evening performance at 6:00 pm. Families are welcome to attend either performance. Both performances will last about 30-40 minutes. Students should dress nicely for the evening performance. Jeans and shorts are fine, but please try to avoid large rips or holes in the clothing. It is very important that every child participate, as this concert is a major part of the study of a musical instrument and also gives us a chance to see how far we have come in our musical studies.  Questions? Contact Meghan Schuster, Stevens Instrumental Music Teacher at mrschuster@seattleschools.org

Students should arrive for the evening performance around 5:40 pm and meet in the cafeteria. Don’t forget your instrument, book, and sheet music!

Volunteer Tea, June 13
If you have volunteered in a classroom, on a field trip, with PTA or Tutu’s Pantry or in any other way this year, Stevens Staff would like to invite you to the annual Volunteer Tea. It will be held in the Stevens Library on Thursday, June 13th starting at 1pm.

5th Grade Graduation, June 20 & End-of-Year Kickball vs Staff, June 27
This year, 5th grade graduation will take place on June 20th starting at 8:15am in the Stevens Cafeteria, while the traditional “5th Grade vs Staff” kickball game will happen the following week on the last day of school on June 27th.

Field Day, June 26
The annual Stevens Field Day will be held Thursday, June 26th!  Mr. Peters is looking for a few volunteers to help him and the fabulous 5th graders run the Field Day games - help with K-2nd grades from 8-10am and/or 3rd-5th grades from 11:30am-1:30pm. The kids love it when parents come out for the fun!

If interested in volunteering email Mr. Peters at ejpeters@seattleschools.org.

Please remind your students to wear closed-toe shoes, preferably sneakers, for field day games!

Tutu's Pantry

Tutu's Pantry has a team for 2019/2020!!
We are so happy to announce there is a team in place for Tutu's for the 2019/2020 school year.  Tricia Cole, Amy Foster and Lorraine Cawaling will be working together to ensure the backpacks are filled and distributed, and the Holiday Food Drive and Winter Wishes programs live on!

We have a great team of fillers on Fridays as well. If you are interested in joining the Tutu's team, please contact tutuspantry@stevenspta.org.

Tutu's Pantry Thanks You!!
Our final Tutu’s Pantry fill for this school year will be Friday, June 14th. So please no more food donations after June 13th, since the program closes over the summer and resumes at the start of the new school year.

For the 2018-2019 school year, we:

  • handed out 25-30 kids backpacks full of meals and snacks for each weekend of the school year
  • provided 46 gift cards with 27 huge boxes of food for the holidays
  • gave families large bags of food for Spring Break
  • had a fully stocked pantry for a few months following the tremendous food drive during the holidays
  • AND raised enough funds through grants, a family foundation, individual donations and the final fundraisers to ensure the program is fully funded for the next couple of years!

Your generosity this year made all of the difference and we THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!

About Tutu's Pantry
Tutu’s Pantry is a program dedicated to help students in the Stevens Community.  Each week the volunteers at Tutu’s Pantry ask a specific grade to help provide supplies for the Pantry Closet.  On Friday, students served by the pantry are sent home with a backpack of kid-friendly, easy-to prepare meals for the weekend.

We encourage families who are able to participate to bring in nonperishable. Examples of needed food items and the donation schedule are posted on the PTA website.

Volunteering at Stevens

Stevens is always looking for volunteers to help out in the classrooms, on the playground, and in the cafeteria. Before you volunteer….

Volunteers need to complete the volunteer sign up process before the day they are coming to help. This includes: filling out the SPS volunteer application form online, watching the sexual misconduct prevention video (you will receive an email verification to save) and bringing photo ID to the school for verification.

If you have any questions, contact Heather Pollard at hrpollard@seattleschools.org in the Main Office.
