On February 22, Grace hosts two Ash Wednesday services, at noon and 6 p.m. Please mark your calendars to attend one of these services as a prelude to a holy Lenten season.


Lent at Grace
Formation for the season of Lent will begin on February 26th at 9:00 am
We will explore Richard Rohr's newest book Jesus' Alternative Plan Please join us as we journey through Lent together.  We will continue our study every Sunday at 9:00 am in the Parish Hall with our last class on March 26th. In our first class, February 26th, we will begin with an outline of each week's topic, and a general review of the book.

I hope you will find it engaging and inspiring during this Holy season of Lent.

"This Lent, we are reflecting on the call to all Christians to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Throughout the season, we will focus on the question, “Who Is My Neighbor?” with themes inspired by the Revised Common Lectionary readings for the Sundays in Lent. We are grateful for its author, the Rev. Robin Denney, rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Napa, California, and for her careful and insightful work. 

This year's Lenten Meditations can be received as daily emails, downloaded in a PDF booklet or read on our website. We will also invite readers to share their own responses to weekly reflection questions related to each theme. "

Urge Congress to Support the Equality Act
LGBTQ+ people are children of God and a blessing to our society. Yet on a day-to-day basis, they face invidious discrimination in many parts of our country. The Equality Act would, for the first time, outlaw that discrimination by codifying LGBTQ+ civil rights in federal law. In this new Congress, we call upon lawmakers to protect the equal worth and dignity of queer people and provide them the legal protections they need to lead full, free lives. 

Write your Senators and Representatives and urge them to introduce and support the Equality Act.

Last Call for “Safe and Warm” Clothing Donations
Please bring your clothing donations (coats, blankets, mittens, scarves, shoes/boots,
sleeping bags and other warm winter apparel) you’ve been collecting for ABCCM’s
“Safe and Warm” Campaign to church this Sunday and put them in the marked barrel in
the foyer at church. The Outreach Committee will be taking these items to ABCCM after
the campaign ends on Friday, February 24.
Aid to earthquake victims

Episcopal Relief & Development continues to partner with ACT Alliance to provide emergency relief in hard-to-reach areas of northern Syria. Working through the Middle East Council of Churches and other local organizations, the ACT Alliance is sheltering 10,000 families in open-air or structurally sound facilities; providing survivors with hot meals, blankets, medicine and trauma support; supplying body bags and other necessities to hospitals; and helping children return to school to provide more stability. The Anglican Church in Aleppo is sheltering another 1,000 people and providing similar support. In Türkiye (Turkey), we continue consulting with partners to plan for short term relief and longer-term recovery.

Please continue to pray for those who have been affected by the earthquake. Donations to the Turkey-Syria Earthquake Response Fund will help the organization to continue to respond to communities impacted by this disaster.

Ecumenical After School Atrium  for Children Ages 3-12  
Beginning March 6 through the end of May, children will gather in the Atrium, which is:  

• A calming place where children can focus on their inner lives 
• A special room which offers images of a loving God and Christ the Good Shepherd using wooden figures, art, and other hands-on activities 
• A space which invites children to interact with stories and images in their own way
• Gentle and open
• An approach which shows older children that they are partners in creating a better world, a world of love and justice Led by trained adults
• Welcoming to parents (Come observe anytime!)
• Also called The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Black History Month


This event in nearby Hendersonville is FREE and everyone is welcome to attend! We will have performing art events that highlight the Harlem Renaissance, the 7 principles of Kwanzaa and there will be an art exhibit by 2 local students! Come out and enjoy this wonderful educational program! 











Pigrimmage Day
In honor of Black History Month, historically black churches around Western North Carolina will open their doors 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 to tell their stories and welcome guests to listen. Organize a pilgrimage with your congregation by contacting parishes listed on the BARRIER BREAKERS WEBSITE. Bishop José will be visiting St. Matthias, Asheville; St. Gabriel, Rutherfordton; and Good Shepherd, Tryon; up to 30 people (first-come, first-served) may join the bishop by signing up HERE.
 

Men of the Church” Wants You!
The group meets every second Tuesday eve, 6:00pm-8:00pm.  This month, we will meet on February 21 at the home of John Rigsby, 103 Dogwood in Weaverville. Who are we? We are contributing members of the church whose meetings typically include fellowship, a nice meal, an assortment of beverages, and an opportunity to grow in both the Church and broader community. A small collection is taken at the meeting to cover costs, typically $15. Meeting locations are sometimes hosted at respective member’s homes or the Church Parish Hall. Beyond monthly meetings, the group is noted for staging an annual fundraising initiative for outreach (the Pig Pickin’!). Contact Ron Sims for further information.

Have flu symptoms? 

Now what?  Take a Covid test.

NEGATIVE but still having flu symptoms? Call your doctor as it may be the flu.  If so, your doctor may prescribe Tamiflu which will speed recovery but must be taken within 48 hours so do not delay.
POSITIVE. Call your doctor.  You may be eligible for Covid treatments such as Paxlovid that will dramatically reduce the odds of hospitalization but must be taken within five days of symptoms.  
Now how do you feel?
BETTER  it's OK to go back out into the world but if you had a positive Covid test, mask for another five days, through day 10.  You do not need to wait for a negative test.
STILL ICKY  Ride it out at home.  If you do go out, wear a properly fitting mask.  Allow time for your body to recover.

Have you considered joining the Altar Guild?

Members of the Altar Guild carry out the meaningful ministry of preparing our church for worship, especially setting the altar each Sunday, as well as preparing for baptisms, weddings, and funerals, and making sure the linens, silver, and brass are in tip-top shape. We need to add two more people  to each of our four groups that serve one Sunday a month. Would you serve with us? Please connect with Shannon Townsend or just walk into the sacristy and speak to the member serving.

Weekly Taizé Tuesday evenings at 6pm

These ecumenical services are known for their melodic chants and prayers. Although music forms a central part of the service it is mixed with comforting periods of silence allowing for contemplation. Lighted mostly by candlelight in the sanctuary of Grace Church, the vesper light of approaching evening offers a safe and nurturing space for a well-deserved moment of peace in our hectic lives. Healing prayer is offered throughout the service for oneself or on behalf of someone else.

Women Walking the Way
Thursday at 8:00 am meet at the Bird Sanctuary parking lot. Women of Grace, please consider joining Rev. Milly for a weekly walk at Beaver Lake. This time together is devoted to deep listening to how we as women walk the way of Jesus, in the world and in our community of Grace. No need to register or even email her, just show up!

There are also several opportunities for flower donors in the near future.  Pisgal Legal Services Pisgah Legal Services, an Anti-Poverty Super Tool. Recently, at one of their Justice Matters Tours, I had an opportunity to learn more about what Pisgah Legal Services does.   PLS provides a broad array of free civil legal aid, anti-poverty advocacy and access to health care in 18 counties and the Qualla Boundary in Western North Carolina. With offices in Asheville, Burnsville, Highlands/Cashiers, Hendersonville, Marshall, Newland, Rutherfordton, Spruce Pine and Waynesville, they are able to help over 20,000 of the most vulnerable people in these communities every year with issues related to housing, safety from abuse, health care and income.   Much of the good work done by PLS is volunteer or pro bono. Last year volunteers donated more than 13,980 hours of service. And that is where we at Grace Church can step up. Consider where you might be able to help. As a volunteer in the Health Justice Program, you can become a guide who helps people understand their health insurance options. Or as a Tax Program volunteer, you can help put cash directly into the pockets of those who need it most. If you are an attorney, consider providing pro bono legal services to Pisgah Legal clients. There are also several opportunities for flower donors in the near future.  Pisgal Legal Services Pisgah Legal Services, an Anti-Poverty Super Tool. Recently, at one of their Justice Matters Tours, I had an opportunity to learn more about what Pisgah Legal Services does.   PLS provides a broad array of free civil legal aid, anti-poverty advocacy and access to health care in 18 counties and the Qualla Boundary in Western North Carolina. With offices in Asheville, Burnsville, Highlands/Cashiers, Hendersonville, Marshall, Newland, Rutherfordton, Spruce Pine and Waynesville, they are able to help over 20,000 of the most vulnerable people in these communities every year with issues related to housing, safety from abuse, health care and income.   Much of the good work done by PLS is volunteer or pro bono. Last year volunteers donated more than 13,980 hours of service. And that is where we at Grace Church can step up. Consider where you might be able to help. As a volunteer in the Health Justice Program, you can become a guide who helps people understand their health insurance options. Or as a Tax Program volunteer, you can help put cash directly into the pockets of those who need it most. If you are an attorney, consider providing pro bono legal services to Pisgah Legal clients. Urge Congress to Support the Equality Act
LGBTQ+ people are children of God and a blessing to our society. Yet on a day-to-day basis, they face invidious discrimination in many parts of our country. The Equality Act would, for the first time, outlaw that discrimination by codifying LGBTQ+ civil rights in federal law. In this new Congress, we call upon lawmakers to protect the equal worth and dignity of queer people and provide them the legal protections they need to lead full, free lives. 

Write your Senators and Representatives and urge them to introduce and support the Equality Act.

We’re Helping Our Neighbors Stay Safe & Warm!
Aid to earthquake victims


Right now, communities are still in the rescue phase. Teams are assessing the damage — and while it will surely be weeks until we know the full extent of the crisis, our plans to work with networks of relief partners through the ACT Alliance in Syria are well underway. Having provided relief for those displaced during the Syrian conflict, our trusted partners are ready and equipped to join our ground response as swiftly as possible. And after assessments take place in Turkey, we are well poised to provide immediate relief as soon as we know what is most needed.
Your gift will help provide immediate assistance — bringing relief and comfort to those impacted by the earthquake.

Altar Guild  

Have you considered joining the Altar Guild?

Members of the Altar Guild carry out the meaningful ministry of preparing our church for worship, especially setting the altar each Sunday, as well as preparing for baptisms, weddings, and funerals, and making sure the linens, silver, and brass are in tip-top shape. We need to add two more people  to each of our four groups that serve one Sunday a month. Would you serve with us? Weekly Taizé Tuesday evenings at 6pm

These ecumenical services are known for their melodic chants and prayers. Although music forms a central part of the service it is mixed with comforting periods of silence allowing for contemplation. Lighted mostly by candlelight in the sanctuary of Grace Church, the vesper light of approaching evening offers a safe and nurturing space for a well-deserved moment of peace in our hectic lives. Healing prayer is offered throughout the service for oneself or on behalf of someone else.

Let us also be especially mindful and compassionate for those 200+ unsheltered men, women, children, military veterans and intact families who are living and sleeping on the sidewalks, under bridges, in abandoned buildings, and in the parks around Asheville. We can love and serve these folks by donating our new or worn coats, thick blankets, mittens and gloves to ABCCM’s “Safe and Warm Campaign”. Just bring your clothing donations to Grace, and put them in the marked barrel on the left in the foyer at church. There are also several opportunities for flower donors in the near future.  Pisgal Legal Services Pisgah Legal Services, an Anti-Poverty Super Tool. Recently, at one of their Justice Matters Tours, I had an opportunity to learn more about what Pisgah Legal Services does.   PLS provides a broad array of free civil legal aid, anti-poverty advocacy and access to health care in 18 counties and the Qualla Boundary in Western North Carolina. With offices in Asheville, Burnsville, Highlands/Cashiers, Hendersonville, Marshall, Newland, Rutherfordton, Spruce Pine and Waynesville, they are able to help over 20,000 of the most vulnerable people in these communities every year with issues related to housing, safety from abuse, health care and income.   Much of the good work done by PLS is volunteer or pro bono. Last year volunteers donated more than 13,980 hours of service. And that is where we at Grace Church can step up. Consider where you might be able to help. As a volunteer in the Health Justice Program, you can become a guide who helps people understand their health insurance options. Or as a Tax Program volunteer, you can help put cash directly into the pockets of those who need it most. If you are an attorney, consider providing pro bono legal services to Pisgah Legal clients. Let us also be especially mindful and compassionate for those 200+ unsheltered men, women, children, military veterans and intact families who are living and sleeping on the sidewalks, under bridges, in abandoned buildings, and in the parks around Asheville. We can love and serve these folks by donating our new or worn coats, thick blankets, mittens and gloves to ABCCM’s “Safe and Warm Campaign”. Just bring your clothing donations to Grace, and put them in the marked barrel on the left in the foyer at church. Members of the Outreach Committee will make sure your clothing donations get to ABCCM. Grace Church concluded the receipt of a $94K plus inherited IRA in January 2023 from the estate of past member Mr. James Black. Mr. Black passed on December 28, 2021 in Ocala, FL. There are also several opportunities for flower donors in the near future.  Pisgal Legal Services Pisgah Legal Services, an Anti-Poverty Super Tool. Recently, at one of their Justice Matters Tours, I had an opportunity to learn more about what Pisgah Legal Services does.   PLS provides a broad array of free civil legal aid, anti-poverty advocacy and access to health care in 18 counties and the Qualla Boundary in Western North Carolina. With offices in Asheville, Burnsville, Highlands/Cashiers, Hendersonville, Marshall, Newland, Rutherfordton, Spruce Pine and Waynesville, they are able to help over 20,000 of the most vulnerable people in these communities every year with issues related to housing, safety from abuse, health care and income.   Much of the good work done by PLS is volunteer or pro bono. Last year volunteers donated more than 13,980 hours of service. And that is where we at Grace Church can step up. Consider where you might be able to help. As a volunteer in the Health Justice Program, you can become a guide who helps people understand their health insurance options. Or as a Tax Program volunteer, you can help put cash directly into the pockets of those who need it most. If you are an attorney, consider providing pro bono legal services to Pisgah Legal clients. Bishop José will be visiting St. Matthias, Asheville; St. Gabriel, Rutherfordton; and Good Shepherd, Tryon; up to 30 people (first-come, first-served) may join the bishop by signing up HERE.   Men of the Church” Wants You! The group meets every second Tuesday eve, 6:00pm-8:00pm  Who are we? We are contributing members of the church whose meetings typically include fellowship, a nice meal, an assortment of beverages, and an opportunity to grow in both the Church and broader community. A small collection is taken at the meeting to cover costs, typically $15. Meeting locations are sometimes hosted at respective member’s homes or the Church Parish Hall.
