Friday Night Lights: Bring a candle, bring a lawn chair, and let your light shine! On Friday evenings about 30-45 minutes before sunset, you are invited to join the gathering on the front lawn of Grace Church. They aren't protesting or carrying signs. They are the sign - a small, visible sign of Christ in a troubled world. And Friday nights, you can join them in taking a couple of hours to, as Jesus taught, let your light shine. Please join in.

Education for Ministry (EfM) Is Here: Education for Ministry is a four-year course in Christianity. It is based on an adult learning model and is student driven. The four years are 1) Old Testament, 2) New Testament, 3) Church History and 4) Theology, liturgics, etc. The core of the program is the small group and the relationships you build with one another while learning about God, Jesus, theology and your own spirituality. We need six students to make a group. Your guides during this journey are Nancy Walters and Christopher Jaquette. If you are interested or have questions, you may contact Christopher, Nancy, Fr. Bob or Fr. Gary, as well as other parishioners who have participated. The cost is $375 per year and Fr. Gary is offering a $200 scholarship to each student. Informational packets are available in the foyer.

Back-to-School Supplies Needed by August 11:  This summer, Grace Church will continue the annual drive to collect back-to-school supplies for local foster children and youth. Our supplies are distributed to local foster parents and to parents who have recently adopted children in the foster system. Please get your donations to the church by August 11, and then, on Sunday, August 18, there will be a "Blessing of the Backpacks" during worship. As always, thank you for your generosity!

Holy Conversations: The dates are set! And the Discernment Committee is signing up participants for three very important "Holy Conversations" - Saturday, August 24 at 8:00 a.m.; Sunday August 25 at 11:30 a.m.; and Wednesday, August 28 at 6:00 p.m. In the days to come, you'll hear more, but for now, please know - every voice is needed, every opinion is worthy, and every member of Grace Church is a holy, beloved and vital part of this journey to find a new rector When asked to sign up for one of these dates, please say "Yes!"

Prayer Requests: There is a new prayer request form on the table as you enter the church. If there is a person who is not on the regular prayer list that you would like to be included in the intercessory prayers for this Sunday, please enter the information on the form. If you would like that person to be added to the regular list, please note that on the form or call the office.

Thank You for Your Investment in Goats! With your donations and an additional $500 from Grace Outreach, we are able to purchase seventeen pregnant goats for Consider Haiti! Through their programming, this "herd of goats from Grace" will  provide NUTRITION, ECONOMIC STABILITY, and funds for children’s EDUCATION.

Bell Ringers Needed: Please let Valerie know if you are willing and able to participate in the bell choir at Grace. Or let her know if you know someone who is not a member at Grace who might be interested in playing handbells. Two recent retirees from the choir were ringers but had no handbell choir at their church, so they came to Grace!

Habitat for Humanity "Episcopal House" Volunteers Needed! We have blocked out volunteer slots as a pledge to construction of the thirteenth Episcopal House: Saturday, September 14; Thursday, September 19; Monday, September 30; Saturday, October 5; and Friday, October 18. For details, check the display on the bulletin board in the foyer and "nail down your work day!"

Sunday School Blast Off! Greetings, Grace families! A new Sunday school year is coming soon and it all starts with a "Sunday School Blast Off" on August 18. Join the fun, beginning with breakfast at 9:00, followed by crafts in the atria, games on the lawn and a special "Introduction to the Atria," which is especially useful for children new to our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Sunday school starts September 8, so don't miss this exciting kick-off!

Pig Pickin' is Coming! Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 21. Our annual Pig Pickin' Barbeque Dinner will be in the church parking lot at 5:30 p.m. with music and some really fine food. The meal begins at 6:15 p.m. Tickets will be available from Men of the Church and at the door.

Recycle Your Prescription Bottles: Many times, the pills people receive in developing countries are wrapped in paper scraps. They have no protection from moisture or the elements. And they certainly are not safely out of the reach of small children. We can help by donating our used prescription and over-the-counter pill bottles (with or without childproof caps). Just remove the labels; wash, rinse and dry; replace caps; and place the bottles in a zip lock bag. A box has been put in the foyer for your donations.

The Asheville Episcopal Youth Ministry first gathering this summer will be August 18th with the Diocesan Splash! After our first year of joint youth ministry of St. James Black Mountain, Grace, St. Mary’s, St. John’s and Holy Spirit Mars Hill, we are continuing to learn and grow! I, Jenna Sharrits, am looking forward to another school year with this youth ministry! I will be sending out more information this month, but for now, mark your calendars: August 18th from 2:00-5:00 in Black Mountain, we will be going to the Diocesan youth event to kick off back to school; and August 25th will be our first Asheville Youth Ministry gathering from 1:00-3:00.
