Principal's Message

March 29, 2017

Dear Roy & Dora Whitman Academy Community,

Welcome back after spring break.  I hope you all had a restful week off; we’ll need the rest for the full and busy last 2 months of the 2016/2017 school year.

We have a lot to look forward to in April, so please keep your eye on the calendar. The first week is parent teacher conferences; the second week is Terra Nova testing week and the Holy week of Easter; at the end of the third week, we have the famous Fine Arts Festival.

This last week, I have been alerted to some safety concerns.

Last Friday, while walking next to Chilli’s restaurant, one of our high school girls was accosted by an exhibitionist. This is the second time this year when one of our girls has been the target while walking out on the street alone.  In order to help our secondary students  with personal safety issues, we have begun offering self-defense workshops during lunch hour. Our plan is to have a session during secondary chapel on Saturday, April 8 for males and females separately.  Matt Doyle and Hanna Nuqul will be meeting with the males, and Dixie Allison and Jean Dunlap will be meeting with the girls.  The session will focus on

  1. Staying Safe at School - (what is sexual harassment/bullying and what to do about it if you are the victims or a bystander, identify trusted friends and adults who can help you, you may feel guilty if you “tell” on someone - remember it’s right to say it’s wrong)
  2. Staying Safe on the Way Home and in the Community (don’t walk alone, look down - looking at men signals interest in them, don’t engage in conversations with boys/men you don’t know, think ahead if you are at someone’s house and you need to walk home)
  3. Staying Safe Emotionally (self-respect, what are your values and boundaries, ways to think before you react, you are in charge of your choices, navigating crushes and relationships with the opposite sex, sexting, identify trust-worthy friends/adults/teachers who give good advice)

If parents have any questions about the program, they can contact Dixie Allison at guidance@whitmanacademy.org.

As a school, we have recently taken steps to become more pro-active about child safety and protection. Matt Doyle has been working on improving the recess experience for elementary students, and Dixie Allison has been working with the elementary students to recognize and deal with bullying behavior.  We have also joined the Child Safety and Protection Network which has a lot of resources for building a robust child protection atmosphere at the school. We will be sending a staff member for training in this area at the end of April.

We take the safety of your children very seriously.

Enjoy the spring weather.

Blessings,

Julia J. Nuqul, M. Ed., Ed. D.
