Mafia Hits Twice

Dear Friends,

Despite many horses being on their holidays it's been an extremely busy time both at home and on the road with race meetings at Newton Abbot, Uttoxeter, Stratford and Southwell in the last fortnight. It was at Southwell where Mr Mafia has twice continued to mine a rich vein of form in recent days - race reports and replays of his victories to enjoy below.

It's also time to unveil our fantastic new yard sponsor, legal firm FBC Mandby Bowdler, who have very generously agreed to be our partner. We're looking forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership with them, you can find out more about their work here. We're extremely grateful to Ross Hemming and his company Leisure Ride Group for being our previous sponsor and for all the support Leisure Ride have given us over the past few years.

We were delighted to support the Racehorse Syndicates Association at their inaugural "Syndicate Sunday" at Stratford last week, and it's great to see them do so much to promote this form of ownership which is so vital to the sports' future. We have two owners at the yard on the RSA committee in Dan Abraham (Foxtrot Racing) and Jon Hughes (Owners For Owners).

On the subject of co-ownership, don't forget we have shares available in some extremely exciting prospects including an exciting new Kayf Tara filly, half sister to Back On The Lash, joining the yard who we are partnering out. More details can be found lower down in this newsletter. Plus a few shares left in our Califet yearling 'Herbie' - he's the spit of Champion Court and from the same stud; and also one share left in our Sans Frontieres yearling 'Basil'. There's also the exciting Mozzaro whose relatives are already making waves on the track.

As ever, give us a call if you'd like to attend a sale, discuss any aspect of ownership, or arrange a visit to view any of the horses or yearlings for sale.

Race Report - Southwell 25th July

Mr Mafia, with Richard Johnson on board for the second time this month, defied both soaring temperatures and a 7lb penalty to take the laurels in the Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap Chase.

The duo made their presence felt early, but sensibly took a measured approach as they went clear four out, crossing the line at a canter as they had a good nine lengths in hand.

We're delighted for owner Peter Boggis and it's clear that this horse definitely likes a spin round Southwell!

Race Report - Southwell 16th July

Mr Mafia, with Richard Johnson on board, gave owner Peter Boggis and connections plenty to celebrate as he won convincingly at Southwell on 16th July.

The 10 year-old bay gelding stayed in touch with the early leaders before making his presence felt mid-way. The partnership really turned the screw four fences out to win by a very impressive twenty lengths.

Raceday for Jasmin

Head Girl Jasmin Richards on Primogeniture produced a storming ride to place a narrow third in her charity race during Racing Staff Week at Newton Abbot on 5th July

Jasmin was racing to raise money for Racing Welfare. In a hot race with no prisoners being taken in the early stages the duo made a late surge to trigger a photo finish for second.

We love supporting charity races where we can. We've encouraged so many members of our team to ride in them as we are 100% behind the initiative. It’s not all about winning...but - our strike rate of them winning or being placed must be pretty high too!

SHARES FOR SALE

3yo Filly by KAYF TARA

£3,375 + VAT per 1/6th Share – including all training fees and keep to end September. £340 per month from October onwards

Following the advice of our bloodstock agent, Gerry Hogan, we were delighted to buy this superbly bred filly from a family we know all about. Her dam, Giovanna, was a really tough racehorse who won 7 races and was in the frame a further 12 times from 38 races earning an official rating of 128 in the process. She was then retired to stud and her first two progeny to race are trained by Martin, the eldest being the very useful Back On The Lash (won two races and placed 3 times from only 6 starts to date) and the other being the year younger Pinnacle Peak who has only had one bumper run to date but will surely be winning soon. It looks like she is passing on her talent and her toughness to all her progeny.

The sire of our filly, Kayf Tara, needs very little introduction being the nine times champion UK National Hunt sire. Indeed, rarely has the jumping game had a stallion so successful or so dominant being the sire of 22 horses rated 150 or higher even though, at the age of 25, there will sadly be fewer and fewer chances to buy his stock – and certainly not one as nicely bred as our filly.

Once we bought her we immediately sent her to PJ Colville in Ireland to look after her and to complete the backing process. We have a good relationship with PJ and he has looked after many of the young stock we have bought in Ireland during the early stages of their development. She will be brought over to Martin’s yard in early September with an aim of starting her off in bumpers at the end of the season before embarking on a busier time hurdling the season afterwards. She has the size and scope to eventually make a ‘Chaser. She will race under the ‘Martin Keighley Racing Partnership 6’ banner which will be headed up by Paul Davis who looks after all the other Martin Keighley Racing Partnerships.

PJ tells us that she has a great attitude, is a lovely filly to deal with, and she’s sure to give the partnership many years of fun before eventually becoming a much sought after broodmare.

Once she is at the yard she can be viewed by appointment;
Call Martin on 07767 472547 or Belinda on 07979 694866 to get involved with her before all the shares are snapped up.

LAST FEW SHARES AVAILABLE
Witness Protection
6yo bay gelding by Witness box

Witness Protection won a Point to Point in Ireland on 31st
March in very good style
.

On his previous run he was very unlucky when his reins broke and he had to be pulled up in the home straight. He would have otherwise finished first or second but he made up for this misfortune by winning next time out.

Witness Protection is an impressive six year old out of Queen’s Exit and is by Witness Box (Exit To Nowhere). He already has experience of jumping in Point to Point races so he’ll go straight hurdling, running through the second half of the summer season and into the first half of the winter season before progressing to chasing next year.

Witness Protection cost £21,000. There are 20 shares available and the maximum cost to include purchase and costs until 31st October 2019 will be £2,100 per share. This can be paid upfront or £420 a month (June to October). This is broken down as £1,050 for the purchase of a 5% share in Witness Protection, £75 to cover purchase costs including vetting and transport and £975 to cover all training and racing costs and a contingency fund.

After 31st October a financial statement will be distributed to the syndicate showing how all subscriptions have been spent and any unspent funds & prize money won will be divided.

Four shares left

'Herbie' - Brown gelding - Califet ex Clondalee

Purchase Price for 10% share = £2745 + VAT (£549) = Total £3294 to include all costs up to June 30th 2019. Contribution for keep: £75 per month per 10% share from July 2019 onwards

Califet is a tremendously exciting stallion who has produced some outstanding horses from his days standing in France, including the likes of Clarcam, Blue Dragon and Carriacou who last month won the 1/2 million euro Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris at Auteuil under Davy Russell. Five years ago he was moved to Boardsmill Stud in Ireland (who consigned our fellow) and so his first Irish bred stock are now 4 years old and are just hitting the tracks. He has large numbers on the ground and is a stallion we're going to be hearing a lot more of, and we have most certainly purchased Herbie at the right time.

Even though Herbie is quite a late foal (May 20th) he is a big lad, stunning looking, very sensible and should grow to be a large chasing type. He is a half-brother to Kagney who is trained by Noel Meade and has won 2 of his 6 races being rated 127 in the process. He reminds Martin and Belinda very much of Champion Court and comes from the same stud as well. An exciting prospect.

'Basil'- Bay gelding - Sans Frontieres ex Killoughey Babe

Purchase Price for 10% share = £1745 + VAT (£349) = Total £2094 to include all costs up to June 30th 2019. Contribution for keep: £75 per month per 10% share from July 2019 onwards

Sans Frontieres is a young National Hunt stallion also going places. He is owned by the National Hunt arm of Coolmore and stands at The Beeches Stud in Ireland. His eldest progeny are now 5 and so have just completed their first 'proper' season racing and already he has sired some exciting winners, such as Mystic Dreamer who won a bumper at Cheltenham in April; the Simon Munir / Isaac Souede owned Lomachenko who was an impressive winner for trainer Nicky Henderson; and the very useful winners Treasure Dillon and Mister Eddman. He also has several point to point winners that have gone through the auction ring at Cheltenham in the past few months.

Basil was superb value when we bought him at the Tattersalls foal sale in Ireland because he was one of the first lots through on the Monday morning before most people were at the sale and Gerry Hogan and Paul looked at each other in disbelief at the price we got him for. He's now a well grown yearling with a very intelligent head and a lovely kind nature. His dam has produced Senor Lombardy, who cost €125,000 as a four year old just two years ago and has since gone on to achieve a rating of 137 with the trainer Keith Dalgeish and further great things are expected of him. If Senor Lombardy goes on to be a very good racehorse (as we think he will) and if Sans Frontieres becomes a National Hunt stallion force to be reckoned with (as we think he will) then we've got a lovely youngster on our hands.

Mozzaro
4yo bay gelding by MOROZOV

ex Baraza by Kalanisi

£4,400 + VAT per 10th share and £240 per month for all training fees and keep

This horse caught our eye from the minute the sales catalogue was published as it is a dam line that a number of our owners know well, containing the very promising young novice chaser Indian Hawk with Nicky Henderson and the very exciting dual-winning 4yo bumper, Melekhov, with Philip Hobbs.

He is a notably good-looking horse, an excellent mover with a really athletic swagger about him. Gerry Hogan absolutely loved him, and we snapped him up for somewhat less than we expected to have to pay, probably because the sire is not particularly well known. By contrast Simon Munir and Isaac Souede paid £110k for Indian Hawk.

Morozov is by Sadler’s Wells and has already sired three encouraging young horses in Eduard, Opening Batsman and Marshal Zhukov. Our lad is the third foal out of Baraza, and her first two foals have already won multiple times: Kinari has won four times to date over fences while Fletcher has won twice over hurdles. We are confident that our gelding will maintain Baraza’s 100% strike rate with winners to runners

Enquiries to Martin on 07767 472547 or Jon Hughes on 01451 850780.
