It's back to work they go...

Dear Friends,

At this time of year you can't help but have a sense of excitement and optimism. With most of the horses back in and training after the summer break it can be said that now is when the season really starts in earnest. It's this sense of purpose which sets the tone at the yard at the moment.

You may see some changes in clothing and signage at the yard when you visit - we're feeling very snazzy in our new clothing and rugs, courtesy of our fantastic new sponsor FBC Manby Bowdler. The legal firm also sponsor Warwickshire County Cricket Club and Formula 3 Race Team UWR Racing. It's great to be in that sort of company and we know the partnership is going to be a succesful one. You can find out more about their work here.

We have shares available in some extremely exciting horses including a few shares left in our Califet yearling 'Herbie' from the same stud as Champion Court; and also one share left in our Sans Frontieres yearling 'Basil'. There's also the exciting Mozzaro whose relatives are already making waves on the track. Plus, be sure to get in touch early if interested in our Black Sam Bellamy foal Spice Boy, full brother to the talented Spice Girl.

As ever, give us a call if you'd like to attend a sale, discuss any aspect of ownership, or arrange a visit to view any of the horses or yearlings for sale.

Race Report - Fontwell 29th August

Primogeniture, with Leighton Aspell on board, produced a gutsy run in the Intandem 2019 Handicap Chase at Fontwell on August 29th. The partnership grinding out a hard-fought victory in the closing stages of the race much to the delight of assembled members of the Martin Keighley Racing Club who had made the journey to the south coast track.

The pairing started out in mid-division, before making steady headway to chase the leaders towards the eighth fence. They then led before four out, were challenged for the lead next fence and all the way to the last, but gamely stayed on well to the finish line to win by a four and a half lengths much to everyones joy.

A masterclass in calm, clinical riding from Leighton and a great result for the Club and the yard.

Race Report - Bangor-On-Dee 2nd August

Cut And Run, with Leighton Aspell on board produced a confident run to come out ahead in the Bangorbet Mares' Maiden Hurdle at Bangor on August 2nd.

The duo were prominent in the early stages and, other than a small mistake at the fifth fence, rarely put a foot wrong. The duo turned up the heat to lead before two out, and drew clear approaching the last, eventually easily winning by a comfortable twelve lengths

Open Day 2019
15th September

It's barely a fortnight until our Open Day on Sunday September 15th. We do hope as many of you as possible are able to come. There'll be ample stewarded parking, refreshments and plenty to see and do for the entire family. Please do also invite your friends too as this event is open to everyone.

There are some great competitions including a draw where we’re giving attendees the opportunity to take part in a raffle to become “Owner for the Day” next time one of our horses runs - with all the privileges and benefits that would come from that.

nd, probably most exciting we'll be judging the inaugural Great Keighley Kake-Off, which as the name suggests is the competition to see who is the king or queen of cakes, be it lemon drizzle, Victoria sponge or even something exotic. Entry is free - simply bring your delicious cakes on the day - hopefully with no soggy bottoms!
Let us know you're coming

Ownership Opportunities & New Horses

4yo bay gelding by MOROZOV

ex Baraza by Kalanisi

£4,400 + VAT per 10th share and £240 per month for all training fees and keep

This horse caught our eye from the minute the sales catalogue was published as it is a dam line that a number of our owners know well, containing the very promising young novice chaser Indian Hawk with Nicky Henderson and the very exciting dual-winning 4yo bumper, Melekhov, with Philip Hobbs.

He is a notably good-looking horse, an excellent mover with a really athletic swagger about him. Gerry Hogan absolutely loved him, and we snapped him up for somewhat less than we expected to have to pay, probably because the sire is not particularly well known. By contrast Simon Munir and Isaac Souede paid £110k for Indian Hawk.

Morozov is by Sadler’s Wells and has already sired three encouraging young horses in Eduard, Opening Batsman and Marshal Zhukov. Our lad is the third foal out of Baraza, and her first two foals have already won multiple times: Kinari has won four times to date over fences while Fletcher has won twice over hurdles. We are confident that our gelding will maintain Baraza’s 100% strike rate with winners to runners

Spice Boy
 by Black Sam Bellamy

Spice Boy

We'll be repeating the success of last years' NH foal purchase programme this year with a planned two purchases that we intend partnering out in ten shares. The idea is to buy one at the Tatts NH foal sale in November in order to supplement one that we have just bought privately even though he won't be at the yard until towards the end of October.

This recent purchase is going to be an exciting and very reasonably priced addition to the band as we have bought a full brother foal to Spice Girl who we are already referring to as Spice Boy. Being a full brother, this means that he is sired by Black Sam Bellamy, of course - who has sired many top class horses and who sadly died last July, and so Spice Boy is one of his last foals on the ground.

Spice Boy is still with his dam but will spend the next couple of months at Batsford Stud until it is time for him to be weaned and, once we have a companion for him, he will be brought to one of the paddocks at the yard. He's a lovely looking colt with excellent conformation and, as you can guess, Martin is delighted to have the full brother to the tremendously gutsy Spice Girl as one of this year's incoming foals. We're still confirming the price per share, but it's likely to be in the order of £1000 per share which, I think you will agree, is tremendous value for a full brother to Spice Girl. Please let me know if you are interested as we are anticipating a lot of interest in him due to the large fan club that his talented full sister possessed.

Four shares left

'Herbie' - Brown gelding - Califet ex Clondalee

Purchase Price for 10% share = £2745 + VAT (£549) = Total £3294 to include all costs up to June 30th 2019. Contribution for keep: £75 per month per 10% share from August 2019 onwards

Califet is a tremendously exciting stallion who has produced some outstanding horses from his days standing in France, including the likes of Clarcam, Blue Dragon and Carriacou who last month won the 1/2 million euro Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris at Auteuil under Davy Russell. Five years ago he was moved to Boardsmill Stud in Ireland (who consigned our fellow) and so his first Irish bred stock are now 4 years old and are just hitting the tracks. He has large numbers on the ground and is a stallion we're going to be hearing a lot more of, and we have most certainly purchased Herbie at the right time.

Even though Herbie is quite a late foal (May 20th) he is a big lad, stunning looking, very sensible and should grow to be a large chasing type. He is a half-brother to Kagney who is trained by Noel Meade and has won 2 of his 6 races being rated 127 in the process. He reminds Martin and Belinda very much of Champion Court and comes from the same stud as well. An exciting prospect.

'Basil'- Bay gelding - Sans Frontieres ex Killoughey Babe

Purchase Price for 10% share = £1745 + VAT (£349) = Total £2094 to include all costs up to June 30th 2019. Contribution for keep: £75 per month per 10% share from August 2019 onwards

Sans Frontieres is a young National Hunt stallion also going places. He is owned by the National Hunt arm of Coolmore and stands at The Beeches Stud in Ireland. His eldest progeny are now 5 and so have just completed their first 'proper' season racing and already he has sired some exciting winners, such as Mystic Dreamer who won a bumper at Cheltenham in April; the Simon Munir / Isaac Souede owned Lomachenko who was an impressive winner for trainer Nicky Henderson; and the very useful winners Treasure Dillon and Mister Eddman. He also has several point to point winners that have gone through the auction ring at Cheltenham in the past few months.

Basil was superb value when we bought him at the Tattersalls foal sale in Ireland because he was one of the first lots through on the Monday morning before most people were at the sale and Gerry Hogan and Paul looked at each other in disbelief at the price we got him for. He's now a well grown yearling with a very intelligent head and a lovely kind nature. His dam has produced Senor Lombardy, who cost €125,000 as a four year old just two years ago and has since gone on to achieve a rating of 137 with the trainer Keith Dalgeish and further great things are expected of him. If Senor Lombardy goes on to be a very good racehorse (as we think he will) and if Sans Frontieres becomes a National Hunt stallion force to be reckoned with (as we think he will) then we've got a lovely youngster on our hands.

Where Are They Now?

Champion Court was gifted to us by owner Mark Boothright.

He is not only a gorgeous horse to have around the yard but also so useful in teaching young jockeys on the gallops & schooling ground (and running away with them if he thinks they are getting a little above themselves!) but also as a companion in the field too.

He's certainly earning his keep.
Any Currency (Woody) initially went Team Chasing after we retired him but he quickly decided that wasn't for him.

Thankfully, Harley Cornock, who looked after and rode him out during much of his time in training here, asked if he could have him.

We were delighted and have been so impressed with how he has adapted to his new discipline of show jumping, especially as he was the spookiest horse in the yard!

Harley & Woody are going from strength to strength together and he wants for nothing.
Warmest Regards
Martin, Belinda, Freddie, Harry and all the team at Condicote Stables
