January 25th - Back On The Lash is back in the winners' enclosure

Come and visit us during The Festival

Dear Friends,

We've just a few days to go until we hear the famous Cheltenham Roar. The run up to The Festival is always a special time of year for anyone connected with jump racing and we're no different.

Cheltenham week is a great time to visit the yard ahead of racing and with some very smart prospects to view on our fabulous gallops we'd encourage potential visitors to get in touch.

Martin has cast his expert eye over The Festival entries and has selected three races that have caught his notice. As someone who has both worked at the course, and trained 20 winners there, Martin has a unique insight into The Home of Jump Racing that not many other insiders can claim. More below.

On the subject of Cheltenham we've had to update our Cheltenham Winners board yet again with the victory in the Steel Plate and Sections Handicap Hurdle on 25th January. This is Martin's 20th winner at Cheltenham which for a yard our size is pretty good going. There's a race report and replay to savour below.

As ever, give us a call if you'd like to attend a sale, discuss any aspect of ownership, or arrange a visit to view any of the horses or yearlings for sale.

Dry January? Not Likely...

Back On The Lash with Jonathan Burke on board stormed up the hill in front on Saturday 25th January in the Steel Plate and Sections Handicap Hurdle - a race that Martin had some experience with, having won with Solstice Star back in 2016

It was in impressive style that Back On The Lash earned the right to have his name added to the Cheltenham Roll of Honour that adorns the entrance to our yard. Jonathan Burke was having his first ride for the yard and always had Lash where we'd discussed - on the outer with plenty of daylight - and he got him jumping really well.  We knew he'd stay further than the trip of 2 miles so he was instructed to never give up on him however when he jumped the last looking in a battle for 2nd with two others, who'd have thought that he'd not only wear down the leader but eventually win cosily by 3 1/4 lengths with his ears pricked!

Owned in partnership by Graham Lovett, Peter Deffains and Mark Boothright he runs in Mark’s colours, made famous at Cheltenham by Champion Court and Creepy who between them won numerous Graded races at the Home of Jump Racing - so it was great to have them back in the Winners’ Enclosure there again.

It’s always lovely to be able to reward the support of owners who have been with us for such a long time. Sadly Graham & Sharon Lovett and Peter & Jackie Deffains couldn’t be with us but Mark’s son Elliott and daughter Annabel were at Cheltenham along with his fiance Elouise and her children Harry and Oliver – attending their first Cheltenham race meeting – no doubt one they will never forget!

A special thank you to sponsors Steel Plate & Sections who are headed by fellow owner here Andrew Jones, whose Benbane Head was our 1st ever Cheltenham winner in 2009. Benny went on to win again at Cheltenham in 2016 and Andrew also owned Wolf Moon who has won twice at Cheltenham for us all too. His company were sponsoring for the 41st year and are Cheltenham's longest serving sponsor.

The Festival 2020 - Martin's Picks

With The Festival almost upon us, Martin passes his eye over the card and gives us his expert view:

Wednesday -  RSA Chase - Champ
Class act in the race who stays very well which you will need to do as they will go an end to end gallop in soft ground.  With a good clear round of jumping  he will be very hard to beat.

Wednesday -  Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase
Tiger Roll at even money could make it five wins at The Festival (has won the Triumph, Amateur 4 Mile Chase and Cross Country twice). The French are sending a few over with chances. The newly JP McManus aquired Easyland will be the main danger to Tiger Roll with Yanworth disappointing last time. I can't see Might Bite taking to the race. Off level weights I think he'll be very hard to beat.

Thursday - Marsh Novices' Chase
Faugheen. Although he's getting on in age, this top class hurdler has been rejuvenated by chasing this season and I think he will run a massive race and could be good value at a longer price.

Black Panther
4yo brown gelding by Nayef

ex Amjaad by Dansili

Black Panther (Beige Silks) finishing third by just a neck at Newcastle on Monday 20th January

Ideal for a sole owner or small partnership.
Purchase price £35,000 + VAT

On 20th January 2020 at Newcastle on debut in a Newcomers’ Bumper, Black Panther confirmed his potential as a smart prospect, coming 3rd under Champion Jockey Richard Johnson.  Richard, Martin and the Racing Post were impressed:  “Ran with plenty of credit.  Travelled smoothly into the straight, staying on well.  He should improve, granted a stiffer test of stamina.”  He was closing in on the horse in front with every stride and only missed out on 2nd place by a neck.

Richard’s recommendation was that, as a young, maturing horse, he shouldn’t be over-raced, and not to run again until spring, on a flat track.  The plan is to target the £45,000, 2m 1f Aintree Grade 2 Listed Bumper on Grand National day, 4th April, for his next outing.

He is impeccably bred by Shadwell Stud:  the dam, Amjaad, cost 330,000 gns. as the half-sister to Irish 2000 Guineas winner Power and Royal Ascot 1m 4f Ribblesdale winners Curvy and Thakafaat.  Her sire was Dansili, who produces many middle-distance Group winners and whose stallion fees are over £100,000.  His colt half-brother sold for 110,000 gns. at Tattersalls’ Foal Sale, November 2019.

He is a most beautiful looking animal.  On the gallops he impresses with his attitude and the length and fluency of his stride.  Martin has loved him since day one last September, when he was acquired.  A gorgeous prospect for the future.

FOR SALE

A 6 owner syndicate - just launched

Beneagles
7yo gelding by Milan ex Liss Rua

1/6th Share £2,340 + VAT + £350 per month

We were thrilled to purchase the fabulous looking Beneagles very recently and are delighted to launch our latest syndicate which is sure to provide the partners with lots of fun and success. Buy in now and you will be going racing in Q1 2020.

Beneagles was previously trained by Alan King, who worked with Martin at David Nicholson’s. Martin contacted Alan, plus Wayne Hutchinson who rode Beneagles, and they both highly recommended him stating that he is has a good attitude, is sound and well put together, and that he may have lost his way in a big yard and would probably benefit from a change of environment and that he will win more races.

Beneagles is just the type of horse that Martin has done so well with in recent seasons, eg Mr Mafia, Capital Force. He’s rated 121, has won two races, been placed 6 times and has picked up prize money in 12 of his (only) 16-race career.

Martin expects further success from Beneagles in long distance handicap hurdles, before embarking on his Novice ‘Chasing career. Further success surely beckons!

He’s very nicely bred and is a half brother to the fabulous Pym, winner of 5 races including an impressive win at Cheltenham in December.

We believe that he will make the perfect syndicate horse, so do get in touch soon as shares are already being claimed.

For more information about Beneagles, please contact Paul Davis on 07307 194998 pauldavispdavis@yahoo.co.uk or Martin Keighley on 07767 472547 to arrange a viewing at the yard.

Thank You Leighton

We join many, many others in racing to wish Leighton Aspell a very happy retirement following his last ride at Fontwell on 23rd February. The two-time Grand National-winning jockey has ridden for us on many occasions including his most recent wins for us on Cut And Run and Primogeniture last August at Bangor and Fontwell respectively and Chequered View on 27th September at Worcester.

Martin says: "It is sad to see Leighton retire as he was still riding at the very top of his game. We loved him riding for us as he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. He was a fantastic jockey to educate a novice horse and his feedback was always worth listening to".

Beth rides for the Air Ambulance

We're delighted to support Work Rider Beth Whittle who'll be racing for charity at Warwick on 20th May.

Beth says "When I was younger my mum broke her back riding a horse in a remote area. I've been involved with horses all my life and therefore know how vital the Air Ambulance Service is for us all as injuries can happen in isolated rural locations.

It's obviously not only horse related injuries that they are dealing with every day and it is therefore so important to help raise awareness of their work outside of the equestrian industry and I hope to raise as much money as I possibly can."

You can help Beth reach her fundraising goal here

And....Finally
