Hearts are trumps: Lord Condi and connections enjoying the first of two trips to the winners enclosure in the last month

Doubled Up

Dear Friends,

It's been a busy month and things are starting to shape up nicely both on the track and at home.

First and foremost we've been delighted to have some great results including Lord Condi opening his account over hurdles at Plumpton and then, last week, an across the card double with Lord Condi at Ludlow and Princess Anne's first winner in 31 years with Chequered View taking the laurels at Southwell the same day. Full race reports and replays to enjoy below. Lord Condi may run at Cheltenham on Friday 26th October, Day 1 of the new Cheltenham season with Harry Stock on board.

It's great to see some younger horses demonstrate their potential and we have some fantastic youngsters in the 3yo geldings by Yeats and Morozov plus "Betsy" the Mahler filly - shares in which are still available.

There are plenty of dates for your diary - with two sales and the Showcase meeting at Cheltenham - so plenty to look forward to. On the subject of 'showcasing' we've unveiled the latest yard improvements recently - more on that later.

This month we'd also like to take the opportunity to welcome two syndicates to the yard in
Foxtrot Racing and Hot To Trot Racing.

And, as ever, give us a call if you'd like to attend a sale, discuss any aspect of ownership, or arrange a visit to view any of the horses for sale.

Chris Stock

We were all shocked and saddened at the loss of our great friend, supporter and owner Chris Stock last month when he lost his brave fight against pancreatic cancer.  Since Chris was diagnosed earlier this year both he and his family (wife Zoe, son and our Conditional Jockey Harry and daughter Abi) have shown amazing dignity, strength and courage and the reality still doesn't seem real and it certainly isn't fair. It's said too often that you couldn't meet a nicer person but with Chris it really was true - he was an absolute gentleman who would do anything for anyone and we have all lost a wonderful man. Chris was extremely proud when Harry rode Bobble Emerald to victory at Cheltenham nearly a year ago on only Harry's 2nd Cheltenham ride.

He'll be sorely missed by so many.

The start of the dream

Paul Davis and Gerry Hogan are linking up to buy two foals in the Irish Foal Sale in November as there is significant value in buying talented NH stock as foals.

We're going to have a dedicated foal area at the yard which gives us all the pleasure of following them as they grow. The horses will eventually be partnered out in 1/10th shares. The purchase price will depend on the price of the foals but will be cheaper the earlier you buy in. Keeping them will be very economical at just £75/month per share.

Race Report: Plumpton 23rd September

Lord Condi under Aidan Coleman gave an eye-catching performance at Plumpton on 23rd September in the Core Spreads Novices' Hurdle not least due to the unique heart motif racing colours. The 5yo chestnut gelding tracked the leader, before seizing the initiative after 3 out. He came clear before the last to win easily under a typically assured ride from Aidan.

It's always exciting when young horses start to show their potential and we're absolutely thrilled for all connections.

Race Report: Southwell 10th October

Chequered View gave HRH The Princess Royal her first winner in 31 years at Southwell in the Mintbet Bet 10 Get 10 Welcome Bonus Mares' Maiden Hurdle.

The 5yo Bay Mare made all the running before being ridden two out staying on gamely to win by 1 1/2 lengths under jockey Leighton Aspell who has a 100% strike record for Martin with two wins from two rides..

This win was made all the more special by the fact this mare is homebred by Princess Anne and was sired by Batsford Stud's Passing Glance

Race Report: Ludlow 10th October

Lord Condi gave connections even more reasons to celebrate at Ludlow in the Teme Valley Insurance Novices' Hurdle under Richard Johnson.

From the start he tracked the leader, moved into 4th 3 out, before rallying at the last, showing plenty of 'heart' on the run-in for a well-fought 1 3/4 length victory.

Assistant Trainer Matt 'Foxy' Carter was there for us on the day and was delighted to saddle his first winner for us.

Suppliers of advanced surfaces for performance horses

Thanks to our landlord, Robert Wharton, we were recently pleased to showcase our new viewing platform, together with further improvements to the yard car park.

We now have planning permission from Costwold District Council for the construction of ten new stables. The washdown area has been built, although the plumbing is still in progress.
Yogi shares his wisdom

We were thrilled to secure the services of Yogi Breisner, world-renowned trainer of both horses and people, to come and spend a morning with our team this week. He watched all of our team whilst warming up cantering around our carpet loop and then gave them feedback on their riding before watching them school over hurdles on the loop.

Some of the team also had the chance of schooling in front of Yogi over hurdles and fences across on our main schooling ground too and they all absolutely loved it. Even the spectators found Yogi fascinating to listen to and we all feel that the more we can improve how our team ride and think about their riding then it can only benefit the horses too.

Obviously there is no charge to the owners of the horses whom we used however the BHA are so supportive of training initiatives such as this one they have kindly offered to meet half of the cost of this training session of which we are very grateful.

3yo bay gelding by YEATS

ex Change of Plan by Alderbrook

¼ shares available, 3yo by Yeats ex Change Of Plan
£8,750 + VAT per 1/4th share + £550 per month, per share.

We were absolutely thrilled to acquire the half-brother to our 4yo by Presenting, Ben Buie, at the Doncaster Goffs Sale, 22nd May 2018.  We rate Ben Buie extremely highly and although he is unraced, he has shown us a lot of speed and class at home on the gallops.

He will be running in a Bumper in the autumn, and if he wins – as we expect he will - the price of this Yeats will rocket. Therefore, when we spotted this gelding in the sales catalogue at Goffs we made a point of seeing him, loved what we saw, and used our inside knowledge of how highly we rated Ben Buie to buy him at a very competitive price.

Yeats was the Champion Stayer in Europe from 2006 to 2009, winning the Ascot Gold cup four times, the Irish St Leger, and the Coronation Cup at Epsom.  He has already produced a number of high-quality horses from his first few crops, most notably Shattered Love, Thomas Campbell and Augusta Kate.  The dam line through Change Of Plan includes Fairy Rath (5x winner), Dato Star (10x winner including the Champion Bumper and the Fighting Fifth) and Hoh Invader (7x winner).

Our Yeats gelding has already been broken in by Martin Jones and has shown that he is a very genuine type as well as being big, scopey and very much a chaser in time.  Although he is a powerful horse, he is surprisingly light on his feet – like Ben Buie. He moves like a dream and has already been impressing those who have seen him at the yard and on the gallops.

It could be a very shrewd move to buy him now as there is every chance that his value will increase once Ben Buie is out on the racetrack. We believe he is an absolutely cracking horse and we are delighted to have him in the yard. He has already been entered in the valuable £50K Newbury Spring Bumper, 23rd March

3yo bay filly by MAHLER

ex Bobset Leader by Bob Back

£5,450 + VAT per 1/6th Share –  £350 per month per share

It isn’t very often you get the chance to secure such a well-bred and well put together filly as this one and so we were delighted to secure her for the price we did – especially as our agent, Gerry Hogan, told us that if we didn’t buy her then he would buy her himself as he was so convinced of her value.

Mahler is really making his mark as a National Hunt sire with his early jumps progeny and has already sired the hugely talented three times graded winner Sutton Place and the 7 times winner and Grade 1 placed Ms Parfois. It’s no surprise that Mahler is producing top class staying progeny since he was a top-class stayer himself, winning the 2 miles Queens Vase at Royal Ascot finishing 3rd in the Melbourne Cup over the same distance when still a 3 year old.

The dam of our filly, Bobset Leader, has already produced two black-type horses from just 3 runners making our filly a half-sister to the 146 rated and 4-times winner Shantou Bob, and the 144 rated and 3 times winner Uncle Danny. Shantou Bob was most effective over 3 miles and Uncle Danny over 2 ½ miles so there is a high class staying feel to her pedigree.

We expect “Betsy” to be just as talented as her half-brothers on the racetrack where we are looking forward to seeing her run under the ‘Martin Keighley Racing Partnership 5’ banner. We are confident she will have a long and successful racing career as she has the size and scope to jump fences.

She was broken in by Martin Jones and returned to the yard in late July. Martin has already fallen in love with her as she has a great attitude and clearly enjoys her work. The current thinking is that she will be an end of season bumper filly who graduates to longer distance hurdling next seasons. She already possesses a great attitude to her work and she’s sure to give the Partnership many years of fun before eventually becoming a much sought after and valuable broodmare. She’s a lovely animal and a fantastic prospect and has already been entered for the valuable Goffs Land Rover Bumper at the Punchestown Festival, 30th April 2019.

Enquiries to Martin on 07767 472547 or Jon Hughes on 01451 850780.

3yo bay gelding by MOROZOV

ex Baraza by Kalanisi

£3,400 + VAT per 1/10th Share, £250 per month thereafter

This horse caught our eye from the minute the sales catalogue was published as it is a dam line that a number of our owners know well, containing the very promising young novice chaser Indian Hawk with Nicky Henderson and the very exciting dual-winning 4yo bumper, Melekhov, with Philip Hobbs.

He is a notably good-looking horse, an excellent mover with a really athletic swagger about him.  Gerry Hogan absolutely loved him, and we snapped him up for somewhat less than we expected to have to pay, probably because the sire is not particularly well known.  By contrast Indian Hawk, owned by Simon Munir and Isaac Suede, paid £110k for their fellow.

Morozov is by Sadler’s Wells and has already sired three encouraging young horses in Eduard, Opening Batsman and Marshal Zhukov.  Our lad is the third foal out of Baraza, and her first two foals have already won multiple times: Kinari has won four times to date over fences while Fletcher has won twice over hurdles.  We are confident that our gelding will maintain Baraza’s 100% strike rate with winners to runners

Enquiries to Martin on 07767 472547 or Jon Hughes on 01451 850780.
