The Season Hots Up!

Dear Friends,

It's not just the unseasonably warm weather - the season is really starting to get going now, and you can feel the anticipation and excitement building at the prospect of some huge race-days ahead.

We were delighted to record a win for Raving Bonkers for the What In Heavens Partnership at Towcester under Harry Stock, more on that in a moment  - but what made it especially pleasing was this was his first ever run for the partnership.

Bobble Emerald under Andrew Tinkler took the honours for the partnership of Bishop, Bowkley and Parker at Southwell on 3rd October, and we were thrilled for them as they are such fantastic owners. There's a race report and video of the victory below to enjoy.

There's a bumper crop of dates for your diary, including the sales both in Ireland and Cheltenham - if you would like to attend don't hesitate to get in touch.

As ever, give us a call if you'd like to discuss any aspect of ownership or arrange a visit to view any of the new arrivals.

 Ownership Opportunities
We've had a lot of interest in our horses for sale, and Lord Condi was sold within a day or two of Owners Day. There are plenty of exciting horses on the yard for sale. As ever call us for details
Miss Condi - Bay filly by Most Improved (IRE). £10,000+VAT

Martin says:
"Not overly big but well made, really tough and genuine with a good atttude. Works well at home. Put in a good showing on her debut at Ffos Las. One to win with on the Flat, before going on to juvenile hurdling in the future"
Pomme De Nuit - Bay filly by Midnight Legend. Sixth shares available at only £340 per person per month

Martin Says:
"Unraced full sister to Rosemary Russet who has already won for Harry Fry. Closely related to winning chaser Strongbows Legend and 12x winner Dabinett Moon, both by Midnight Legend who produces such tough, game horses."
Twentyoneblackjack - Bay gelding by Robin Des Pres (FR) £8,000+VAT

Martin says:
"A nice big, scopey horse who is a proper National Hunt type. Jumps great and a real chaser in the making. Has had one run in a bumper at Worcester where he was outpaced but stayed on gamely to finish just behind the leaders at the line. A fun horse to get going with straight away"
Unnamed Chestnut filly by Getaway £15,000+VAT

Martin Says:
"Not overly big but beautifully put together and a really athletic horse by a sire who is making a tremendous name for himself. Shows a fantastic attitude on the gallops, already cantering away nicely. She'll be ready for a run in bumpers later in the season."

 Emerald Sparkles at Southwell

Bobble Emerald dominated in the Download The App At 188Bet Handicap Hurdle at Southwell under Andrew Tinkler.

Taking the initiative from the 2nd, he was never less than three lengths clear until the second last where he stretched out to win by a handsome 6 lengths for owners Colin Bowkley, Michael Parker and David & Janne Bishop

We're absolutely thrilled for them and he's been such a star over the years with this being his 5th win over hurdles.

Do you know of someone who might enjoy the thrills of ownership but who hasn't taken the plunge yet?  Or perhaps you know of someone who has horses elsewhere that could do with a change of scenery?  Why not bring them over for a visit?

Bring someone new to visit the yard and we'll say thanks with a bottle of something, and when they join us we'll say thanks again with something suitable.

 Heavenly start for Raving Bonkers

Raving bonkers showed he was anything but to put in a professional performance under Harry Stock to win the Visit Our Shop 'Star Sports Mayfair' 'Newcomers' Standard Open NH Flat Race for the What In Heavens Partnership at Towcester on 11th October

Tracking the leaders until 4 out he answered when asked by Harry to challenge for the lead 2f out before staying on bravely to win by a length.

This was his first run for the What In Heavens partnership, and indeed their first ever horse. We're absolutely delighted for them and look forward to many more successes in future.

Owner(s) Of The Month
David Bishop (pictured, right) owns Bobble Emerald, together with Colin Bowkley (pictured, left) and Michael Parker. David's wife Janne, in addition to putting Mary Berry to shame in the cake-making stakes, is also a keen member of our Racing Club. When asked how he first got into ownership David explains:

My first racecourse visit was the Easter meeting at Wetherby racecourse, and I can still remember the first three home in the main chase! Following that I became hooked on point to points and pursued that branch of racing all over the country for many years.

In the 1990's, I first got into ownership with partners and had lots of fun but not too many winners. In 2008 we had two horses in training wanting a new home after their trainer retired. One went another local trainer and the other to Martin. We've been with Martin ever since. The horse he took over, Ponchatrain, had run well for two seasons but never won. He then went on to win 4 races in two years.

Martin then recommended we buy the young Havingotascoobydo (pictured, above). He easily won his bumper and then two novice hurdles and two novice chases. Sadly, injury cut short his progress and we gave him to his groom who has found him another career.

The Racing Post covered the end of his racing with the immortal comment "Havingotascoobydo, to the relief of racecourse commentators, has now been retired!"

Our current horse is Bobble Emerald, who despite some setbacks has gone on to win 5 hurdles and will probably run in the last race of the Cheltenham Showcase Meeting on Friday. The stable has some terrific training facilities and also the ability to pick good young horses. None of our horses cost a fortune.

But, I've set Martin the ultimate challenge:
In 1992 our partnership ran a modest & ageing hunter chaser in the Cheltenham Foxhunters. Rated 93 and starting at 100-1, he stayed on up the hill to run second to Rushing Wild, later a high class chaser.

We'd love it if Martin could go one better !
Meet Simon Prowting (pictured, left) - founder of the What In Heavens partnership, owners of Raving Bonkers. Simon has very kindly shared his story:

In 2014 I was diagnosed with an eyesight problem (rod-cone dystrophy). This was bit of a shock - I'd in effect been told I was going blind. After weeks of cocooning myself up in bed I began to realise that this was not going to achieve anything.

I recalled a comment from a friend of mine who once said " We are here for a good time and not a long time " and I realised that it was time to do a little less people pleasing and to follow ones dreams. I called a friend John Digby who had owned a racehorse previously. He suggested that I go and meet Martin and Belinda. So the acquisition of our four year-old ensued and I was adamant on its name "Raving Bonkers" if Weatherbys would allow it.

So the journey had begun and I had a share of a racehorse. This was in itself a dream come true. Many phone calls later there were 5 more people in the "What in Heavens Partnership"

John and I were the only owners able to make it on the 11th October to see our boy running in the last race. Well what a race!! Raving Bonkers won his first race coming up the hill at Towcester and brought tears to my eyes with an outpouring of emotion that is not unusual from this quite emotional individual! One could not have asked for anything more that day.

Our horse has the most wonderful temperament and to hug him is to love an animal that you know has the sweetest of love to give. He is our lovely lovely boy and I cannot express how much we are so pleased to be part of owning him.
