On 20th January 2020 at Newcastle on debut in a Newcomers’ Bumper, Black Panther confirmed his potential as a smart prospect, coming 3rd under Champion Jockey Richard Johnson. Richard, Martin and the Racing Post were impressed: “Ran with plenty of credit. Travelled smoothly into the straight, staying on well. He should improve, granted a stiffer test of stamina.” He was closing in on the horse in front with every stride and only missed out on 2nd place by a neck.
Richard’s recommendation was that, as a young, maturing horse, he shouldn’t be over-raced, and not to run again until spring, on a flat track. The plan is to target the £45,000, 2m 1f Aintree Grade 2 Listed Bumper on Grand National day, 4th April, for his next outing.
He is impeccably bred by Shadwell Stud: the dam, Amjaad, cost 330,000 gns. as the half-sister to Irish 2000 Guineas winner Power and Royal Ascot 1m 4f Ribblesdale winners Curvy and Thakafaat. Her sire was Dansili, who produces many middle-distance Group winners and whose stallion fees are over £100,000. His colt half-brother sold for 110,000 gns. at Tattersalls’ Foal Sale, November 2019.
He is a most beautiful looking animal. On the gallops he impresses with his attitude and the length and fluency of his stride. Martin has loved him since day one last September, when he was acquired. A gorgeous prospect for the future.
