News and Updates from MESA

From the Principal's Desk

Parents:  below is a copy of an important letter physically being sent home with scholars on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.  It is primarily being sent home because we realize that many families are not reading or have access to the newsletter.  The information shared in the letter doubles as my intro to this week's newsletter. Happy reading families!

It is seldom that I send home parent letters so I apologize for this method of communication in advance.  I am happy to report that an increasing number of parents are connecting with the MESA news and updates by reading the school newsletters (sent out bi-weekly).  Today, in fact this afternoon, the most updated school newsletter will be sent out to your email accounts (if we have them in our system) and I can assure you that it will contain very important information about awesome things happening here on campus.

I am sharing this letter in physical print because while we have many families responding and receiving our updates we are worried that all parents are still not connected via the MESA newsletter, text alerts, and our school website and therefore, you might not be updated on what is going on in your child's educational experience at school.

Please take a moment to add the following to your contacts

  1. Send a text message to 80123 and in the subject line type: EAGLES.  Doing this will automatically add you to the MESA text alerts. You will receive information immediately on unexpected school closings, events, and other news briefings related to our school.  Parents have reported this to be a very helpful tool. Recently we have had to use this information highway to report late bus arrivals.

  2. Accompanying this letter is a new EMERGENCY CONTACT CARD.  A recent audit revealed that 40% of the parent contact information including emergency contacts are outdated.  Many parents/ families change phone numbers and addresses throughout the year and forget to update the school. In the event that there is an emergency we NEED to be able to immediately contact parent/ guardians.  Please complete the updated emergency contact and its entirety for each of your MESA scholars and return it to school. We will update student records in our electronic database from the information provided.

  3. Please be sure to include your email address on the emergency contact card.  The newsletters are sent to the email addresses that you provide. If you notice that you are not receiving the school newsletter bi-weekly on Tuesdays, please contact the main office.

  4. You can also visit our school website at https://www.theenvironmentalschool.org/  to learn more about MESA.

It is my hope that the information provided in this letter is helpful to you in our effort to increase parent communication.  Trimester 2 report cards will be mailed out tomorrow. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Wisconsin Forward Assessment

Dear MESA Parent:

Wisconsin scholars in Grades 3-8 will be participating in the Wisconsin Forward assessment.  Our school is scheduled to take the Forward assessment between March 18 and April 12, 2019.

The Wisconsin Forward assessment tests all scholars in 3rd-8th grade in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics while only 4th and 8th graders test in Science and Social Studies.  One or more subtests may be administered daily during the identified time frame and it is very important that your son or daughter be in school during this time. Scholars not in school on the scheduled testing days will be scheduled for a make-up test prior to the close of the testing window.

The Informational Brochure for Families  gives more information about the assessment including its purpose, what scores will be provided, and how the scores will be used.

The Wisconsin Forward assessment measures the knowledge and skills your scholar(s) should have acquired by the time they reach each grade level. Their performance on the assessment will not affect any of their current grades. Please encourage your son or daughter to take the test seriously and do the best they can. The results of these tests will be used to help school staff make determinations or placement in classes to best support your child(ren).

If you have any questions, please contact our academic dean, Mrs. Calloway in person during school hours or via email at cramos@mke-es.org.

Thank you,

Michael Morgan

To access the Wisconsin Forward Assessment schedule, please click here. Scholars were provided with many opportunities with their classroom teacher and during their IT specials to become familiar with the online training tools, practice tests, and written responses for the ELA section of the test.  I encourage you to provide time for your child to study for the upcoming Forward Test by clicking on the following link  https://wbte.drcedirect.com/WI/portals/wi and then selecting"Item Samplers Sign In". After that, your child will click on their grade level and the content area of the test that they would like to practice (Example 3rd grade, ELA).

Monthly Academic Incentive

On March 4th, teachers selected scholars who earned the Eagle Effort or High Flying Achievement award. I enjoyed eating nachos and spending quality time with those who earned the monthly incentive.

Report Cards & STAR Progress Reports

Trimester 2 Report Cards and STAR Annual Progress Reports will be mailed this week Wednesday. If you do not receive the report cards or STAR Report, please contact your child’s teacher immediately. The purpose of this communication is to keep you updated on your child’s progress. You will notice that the report cards will indicate if your child is meeting grade level expectations or not. If your child is not meeting expectations, it is imperative that you collaborate with your child’s teacher to ensure their success. Feel free to contact me directly in person or email me at cramos@mke-es.org with any questions..

Family Engagement w/Dean Cobb

Greetings families! What an interesting winter we’re having! I hope everyone is staying safe and warm during Mother Nature’s spin on WI weather. On February 28th we will be having our monthly parent meeting sponsored by Vroom. Vroom is a program that teaches simple interactions between you and your children and help build brain foundations for all future learning. If you want to find more information about Vroom and what they offer log onto www.vroom.org  Our club choice fundraiser ended Feb 19th and all forms and monies have been collected, delivery is scheduled for March 11th from 3:30-4:30 in the PD room. Student led conferences were a success on Feb 7th and 8th! If you have not scheduled a time to meet with your child’s teacher please do so this week and if you’re having trouble getting in contact with your child’s teacher please reach out to me. All K4, K5, 1st, 3rd and 5th graders have been screened by Prevent Blindness of WI. If your scholar received a form to follow up with a optometrist please do so, when a scholar can see better they have a better chance at being successful in school. The ACTS housing home buying program has been rescheduled for March 28th 4:30-5:30. Please clear your calendar so you can attend that meeting.

Help MESA Fundraise

MESA has a fundraising goal of $40,000.00 this year. There will be opportunities to support our school.  If you want to make a donation to the school please visit our school Facebook page. If you would like to volunteer, please see Dean Cobb.

  •  Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework.

  • Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going.

  • Make sure the materials your child needs, such as paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available. Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance.

  • Help your child with time management.

  • Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don‘t let your child leave homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates.

  • Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires.

  • When your child does homework, you do homework.

  • Show your child that the skills they are learning are related to things you do as an adult. If your child is reading, you read too. If your child is doing math, balance your checkbook.
