Cobra's Weekly Round Up

Round 15

this week.

We play Dalyston this week at Dalyston. Even though we haven’t played each other that often we are always made welcome and appreciate the hospitality that Dalyston offer.

last week.

We welcomed Garfield to Cora Lynn. The ground was in terrific condition once again which is critical for these games in the back end of the season.

Our boys started off as hoped for kicking nine goals in the first quarter.  Our ball use and leg drive really set the tone. A further eight goals in the second quarter pushed the margin out at half time. Credit to a young Garfield group, after halftime our boys were matched in the contest with Garfield making a game of it for the last two quarters. The wet weather set in which led to a decent slog to end the game.

Our better players were Heath and Jaxon Briggs off the halfback and half forward lines.
Robbie Hill was cool and calm across the defensive 50. Nathan Gardiner was a key focal point up forward. And Nathan Villela made a solid return to senior football after sixteen months off due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Well done, Nathan

development team.

On another cracking winters day, we took on Garfield who pushed us all the way in our previous encounter.

With Hayden Speirings making his comeback after a horrible injury in round one our boys were up and about early along with Ryan Speirings winning the clearances and Jayden Fraser taking advantage from some great forward entries.

Our second term was similar to the first term with Luke Foreman proving a hard match up. Tristan Lilley and Hayden Speirings were well on top. After half time we showed some glimpses of what we are capable of but some simple errors going forward cost us at times. The game opened up in the last quarter and Luke Foreman continued to star with 9 goals.

Best Players were Ryan Speirings, Luke Foreman, Tristan Lilley and Hayden Speirings

Round 15, had us coming up against Garfield, a strong side that has shown over the whole season to be very competitive and a side that has had many very good wins. We came into the match well aware that we needed to be at the top of our game to give us a chance to try get over the top of them.

It was a very hard-fought affair with both teams throwing themselves at every contest, Garfield controlled more of the game than we did, and probably over the whole game had the better of some of the plays throughout.

Going into the last quarter it was under a two-goal lead for Garfield and it was important for us to get the first goal. That didn’t go to plan though with Garfield getting that goal and making it very hard for us to get the result we were after. However, the boys rallied very quickly and after Garfield’s goal we were able to get a good clearance from the centre and get the ball forward to kick a goal ourselves. That sparked our boy’s interest. So back to the centre and we were able to get another clearance, get the ball into our forward line again and get another quick goal. So now it was less than a goal and it was game on. After many minutes of contested footy, we won a mark forward and a fifty-metre penalty and were able to hit the front with about two minutes to play.

It was an amazing effort from the boys, and they were able to play every minute of the game and sneak away with a win against another great side. Lochlan Clarke again was a steady hand controlling things in defense, Oliver Sail started forward and kicked a few goals before coming into the ruck and helped turn the game. Tom Exposito gave plenty of run and along with Jett Edwards were both strong through the midfield and across half back. Ryley Potter was a good target up forward and was able to kick two goals, including the match winner, it was also great for the team to have Logan Fox play a strong return game on the wings for his first game back after having a long period out with injury.
