1 John 4:18-21
There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear expects punishment. The person who is afraid has not been made perfect in love. We love because God first loved us. Those who say, “I love God” and hate their brothers or sisters are liars. After all, those who don’t love their brothers or sisters whom they have seen can hardly love God whom they have not seen! This commandment we have from him: Those who claim to love God ought to love their brother and sister also.
What great thing would you do if you knew you could not fail?
This question was originally posed in Robert H. Schuller’s book You Can Become the Person You Want To Be. My friend Sherry Danner asked it of another friend recently who was debating taking on a great new challenge.
So many times fear keeps us in a small box and leads to small living. People stay in jobs they dislike because they are afraid of trying a new career. Some stay in abusive relationships because the fear of being alone is too great. Sometimes we avoid going to the doctor because we fear the diagnosis. Fear makes us think irrationally and isolates us. Left unchecked it can paralyze and immobilize us.
We weren’t created to live and make decisions from a state of insecurity and fear. Spend some time asking God in prayer to fill your heart with the security of God's love. Then take that security and move ahead as God directs you.
Sometimes I feel small and scared and the world seems like a frightening place. This makes it hard to leave my place of comfort to step out to new challenges but I know that is what you call me to do. Please give me the sense of security to rise to your challenges. Please help me find the people in my community who can support and encourage me to live the bold life you call me to live.
