PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

As we break for summer holidays, I would like to acknowledge our students, staff, and parents for contributing to the Vancouver Waldorf School community that we are all so proud to be part of. It’s been a wonderful year marked by smiling faces in the halls, heartwarming class plays, wonderful music concerts, as well as great community spirit at all of the open houses and fairs. I am reminded daily of my love for this school community; thank-you to all who have made these opportunities possible.

Report cards will be distributed through the BigSIS Parent Portal in early July for ECC and Grade School students, and at the end of June for High School students. In reading over and reviewing the reports, I am struck by the rich and in-depth curriculum that has been created for our students with dedication, insight and thoughtfulness by our teachers.

You will notice a new report card format, which is our first step in reflecting to you how we are taking up the new BC Ministry of Education curriculum. Along with the other Waldorf Schools in BC, we are responsible to follow this province-wide curriculum. It is encouraging to see how well these new requirements marry with Waldorf Pedagogy and our vision of developing the full human being. The courses are titled by the ministry names, however, the content and method of delivery are still the same. We hope that through this new method of reporting, you will gain greater insight into your child’s progress, not just academically, but also socially and emotionally.

If you have any problems accessing Parent Portal, please contact the school and we can help you get set up. Paper copies of student reports are available upon request.

Best wishes for the upcoming summer – we look forward to your return in the fall!

Dear Vancouver Waldorf School Community,

Let me take this moment to thank you all for the six years of a wonderful relationship.

You have been my home, my joy, the ground for my learning and growth, and also the inspiration for my next step in life. The students I have encountered here made my years of teaching in Vancouver the richest years of my life yet, and they will always have a special place in my heart. I am sure I will miss teaching soon enough!

Many of you might have heard that 3 years ago I started a Masters program in counselling. Well, I have just graduated last Saturday and it feels like it is time for me to dive fully into my new profession. In August I will be beginning my new job as a counsellor in Bella Bella, a small Indigenous Community up North, a 6-hour ferry ride from Port Hardy. I am very excited to have this amazing opportunity and I am also full of wonder about this unexpected turn of events.

I would really like to stay in touch with all of you and so here is my personal email: plewasonia@gmail.com. Please do not hesitate to reach out and let me know how things are going at the VWS. I will always be delighted to hear from you. And if you are up for an adventure, I do have a spare guest room in Bella Bella!

With love and gratitude,
Sonia Plewa

NEW MOON SOCIAL FINAL UPDATE

As we wrap-up tallying expenses, storing supplies and ensuring silent auction items make their way to the lucky winners, we’re also thinking about the New Moon Social in 2019 and how we can host an even better celebration. Thank you to all who have shared feedback, ideas and offers to participate in planning for next year. We are listening to, and are grateful for, your input.

As far as reaching our ambitious fundraising goals, we are thrilled to share that approximately $10,000 was raised and 9 new donors have signed-on as monthly supporters. The New Moon Social was so successful because of your strong show of support for the idea of hosting a community connection fundraiser in the first place and then contributing to its’ eventuation in your own unique way.

Hosting such a fantastic evening was made possible by the generous support of the following donors: Ali and Bill McCaig of Nicli Antica Pizzeria (in Gastown and soon to be opened in Edgemont Village!), Rebeka Eriksson for the Tinhorn Creek wine, Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers, Culture Craft Kombucha, Lonsdale Rentals and Earnest Ice Cream. A big thanks as well to Mark James Fortin and his father, Jack Fortin, for opening the evening with their upbeat set of jazz standards and to multi-instrumentalist, Mark Woodyard, who set the dancefloor ablaze with his unique musical talents. And finally, thank you to our volunteers who believed in our vision, worked hard all night long, and took care of all details until the wee hours of the morning.

We’re excited about next year’s New Moon Social and will reach out in the fall when we start planning again.

Sincerely,
Kate Muker, Paige Wright and Mary Henley

GRADE SCHOOL FUN DAY

Thank you Grade 7 and Mrs Elliott for coordinating such an epic Fun Day!

YEAR-END PICNIC IN THE PARK

A big thank you to all families who joined and contributed to the fun at Princess Park for the Year End Picnic in the Park.

We were treated to a potluck feast, games run by Grade 5 parents, Chris Henley and Michelle Mason, and mangoes-on-a-stick by Grade 5 parents, Elena Martinez and Jacinda Oldale. The perfectly ripe mangoes were lovingly prepared and served for a small donation which will directly benefit the families affected by the Lynn Valley apartment complex fire on June 10.

Of all the many memories made at the picnic, the most moving was the beautiful welcome ceremony shared by Grade 1 parent, Amy Parent (mother of Willow and Max), and her multi-talented friend and colleague, Marissa Nahanee, of the Squamish and Nisgaa Nations. Following Marissa’s open-hearted sharing of a Squamish story and song about the land on which we stood, Amy presented the school with an artwork by Marissa entitled “Hoobiiyee” on behalf of her family. We will work in collaboration with Amy and Marissa to find the perfect spot to house our new treasure so “Hoobiiyee” can be enjoyed by our community when we return to school in September. Thank you, Amy and Marissa!

Sincerely,
Mary Henley
