ANNOUNCEMENTS

Faculty Update - Leaving our High School faculty this December is Kaitlyn Cramb and Karim Sohrevardi. Thank you both for your extensive knowledge and the enthusiasm you have brought in your own ways. We wish you both all the best in your future endeavours.
We are pleased to announce two new faculty members who will be joining us in the High School in January. Dr. Wendy Young and Shahrzad Motaghedi will be joining the Math and Science faculty. Please join us in welcoming these two new Math/Science teachers to the VWS community.
PS/KG Commitment - PS/KG 2019-20 Commitment forms and deposits are due by January 11.
Teacher Cards & Gifting - Cards are available for parents to sign in the Reception at the GS & HS, and in the Parent Room at the ECC (unless your Class Rep has communicated otherwise).
As in previous years, those who choose to may also leave a monetary gift which will be collected by your Class Rep. We know that many families like to show their appreciation at this time of year and we offer this opportunity as a way to simplify your holiday gift giving. Of course, you are welcome to show your appreciation in whatever way is best for your family.
The cards will be available to sign until the morning of Wednesday, December 19.
Gift Card Update - Ordering for Dec 15 and Jan 1 is now closed. If you need cards before January 15, please approach the Accounting Office directly. To date, we have raised $4,763 with 54 people currently signed up for recurring orders. Congratulations to Nicole Beauchesne who won the $50 December grocery card!
Pick-up & Drop-off - Reminder that the lane in front of the school is for "Kiss & Go" drop off only and must be left free for emergency vehicles and the school bus. Do not park here or leave your vehicle at any time between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm. As the days are increasingly getting darker and shorter, it's critical to use caution in the parking lot and in the surrounding neighbourhood.
Lost and Found - There are still many items remaining in the Lost & Found. Please come to see if any of the jackets, boots, mitts, lunch bags, etc. might belong to your child(ren). There are clothes for small children too, so Early Childhood families, please come and have a peek! A rack is set up in the front hall of the Grade School. Anything left by Winter Break will be donated to charity. Thank you!
Excellence in STEM - Congratulations to Lisa Hitch, class teacher at Sunrise Waldorf School, who was named as a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). How wonderfully exciting! read more and more

SANTA LUCIA

Santa Lucia, Thy light is glowing,
All through the darkest night, comfort bestowing.
Dreams float on wings of night,
Comes then the morning light.
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia

The festival of Santa Lucia is held by the 2nd Grade with support from their “Buddy Class” and is an in-house celebration. Santa Lucia is a festival of light that heralds the Yuletide. Perhaps Santa Lucia and her attendants will form a procession to visit each of the classrooms, or students will gather together in the hall to softly sing. Santa Lucia will serve saffron buns to all and coffee for the teachers, all in the warm glow of candlelight.

GRADE 12 UPDATE

The VWS Class of 2019 is raising money for their year-end trip, where they will be participating in two weeks of international community service. Thank you for supporting their fundraising initiatives.

Poinsettias, Wreaths, and Planters Have Arrived! - Stop by Ronaye’s office to confirm your order and pick up your plants. If you missed the order deadline, you might still be able to select from a few red or white poinsettias to make your home festive!

Flower Bulbs & Purdy's - A handful of orders have not yet been picked up. Please check the table in the GS entranceway if you're missing your purchase.

Tuesday Treats - The final Tuesday Treat for 2018 will be next Tuesday after school. Bring your loonies and toonies for an after school treat or beverage! Be sure to ask them about their ever-evolving travel plans.

Thank you for your support and we wish everyone a lovely holiday season.

CHRISTMAS AT THE RED DOOR STORE

We have been able to open each weekday morning 8:30 – 10:30 am and almost every afternoon for half an hour at pick up thanks to our stellar volunteers. Thank you Ute and Nicole for your constant help and commitment!

The store is fully stocked with beautiful items for Christmas including Terrasoul’s Elderberry syrup gift kits, Melissa’s all organic shea butter essential oil balms which are perfect stocking stuffers, Claudia’s gorgeous glowing bee bowls and various glass straws offered for Grade 11 fundraising. There are still heaps of books including various Christmas titles. We have an assortment of crystals, geodes, agates, pink salt lamps and candles holders and just two sacred geometry sets left in each quartz crystal and amethyst. I am particularly smitten with the various gnomes, fairies and dolls in all corners of the store who are keeping watch over all things. Our new and improved POS system is able to tell us things about inventory (like we sold 82 bars of modelling wax last month). It seems to me that a stocking isn’t stuffed unless it has a token beeswax modelling wax or two. If you’re looking to avoid big, crowded stores this season, come and find some quality and useful treasures at the Red Door Store.

If there is enough interest we may be open for a few hours on the weekend of Dec 15/16 for parents who have not been able to pop in during our weekday hours. If a weekend opening is helpful to you please email Ella at reddoor@vws.ca.

MID-WEEK VIEWING

This 2nd Waldorf 100 film deals with encounter, engagement, and inclusion: learning that goes beyond merely accumulating information can be understood as an individual way to seek the truth. Enjoy.

UPCOMING EVENTS

"When human beings meet together seeking the spirit with unity of purpose then they will also find their way to each other"
~ Rudolf Steiner

Congratulations to our wonderful student musicians who performed last night; it was a true joy to listen to them play. The progress from first picking up their violins and cellos in 4th Grade to playing in the High School Ensemble is an auditory journey that made my spirit sing. We are very lucky to have such a robust and talented Music Department here at VWS. Thank you to Natalia Manalov, David Szigeti, Irina Shcherbakova, Evgeny Shcherbakov, and Stanislova Deltcheva for your masterful instruction and accompaniment.

Happy Santa Lucia Day and may this Second Light of Advent shine brightly for you during these darkest days.
Many blessings
Laura Bergstrome
