COMMUNITY MEETING RECAP
Walkability and Pedestrian Safety
Two of the new pedestrian crossings of South Boulevard are in! There is a new signal and pedestrian crossing at Rensselaer—meaning at the press of a button you can stop traffic with a red light and cross the street for an Einstein’s Bagel. The same kind of crossing is going in at Kingston and South Boulevard and will be active soon.
There are two more signaled pedestrian crossings of South Boulevard (at Mac’s and Publix) that will be built, and two new signaled pedestrian crossings of South Tryon that will be built at Kingston and at Brookhill near Dunavant. You can see the slides from CDOT here.
Love these new improvements? Take a moment to thank the Charlotte Department of Transportation team who have been working hard to make them happen.
Monica Carney Holmes showed us how the city’s new Transit-Oriented Development zoning ordinance will translate our goals from the South End Vision Plan into regulation that will guide future development.
The new TOD rules will create more density around transit stations, prioritize walkability in transit-oriented neighborhoods like South End, and provide developers flexibility on minimum parking requirements in TOD zones.
The rules raise the bar on open space required on large sites, from 1% to 5-10% of the total, and create bonus structures to allow additional height in exchange for community benefits like affordable housing, jobs, sustainability and streets and transit benefits. Learn more here.
City Council will hold a public hearing on the new TOD ordinance on March 18th.
