South End Happenings

South End Just Got a Little Brighter

New art always sparks joy! Have you seen the two new art pieces in the neighborhood? Caroline Simas' work Color Me Happy is on the sidewalk at 300 W Summit Ave. The piece, commissioned by Foundry Commercial, is a testament to the vibrancy of South End. Color Me Happy is now part of the Gold District Art Walks CLT tour, and you can tag #colormehappyCLT if you post a picture from your self-guided tour.

A few steps away at Dilworth Artisan Station is the bright new work by Mike Wirth, commissioned by White Point Partners and painted with collaboration from Arko and Drew Newpher. Three different pieces on the exterior walls of Campania Fine Molding tell the history of the building, which was a parachute manufacturing plant during WWI. The Nail Your Landing mural pays homage to that history, and the Bottles of Pop mural celebrates the soda manufacturing done at the building before and after wartime. Facing Kingston Ave is the Rosie mural, where you can also find the South End Interactive QR code to watch a video straight from the artist about his inspiration and this work. The group spent over 100 hours and 300 gallons of paint creating this piece, documented in their mural tour video. All of the pieces have been added to the East/West self-guided Art Walks CLT tour.

Welcome to the Neighborhood

Two new local spots have opened in South End! Charlotte Collective is celebrating the grand opening of its second location this Saturday, August 14th, on West Blvd steps from Camden and right next to Pop the Top. The shop showcases goods from local creatives, "built on the foundation of deepening and strengthening the Charlotte community."

Trolley Barn Fermentory & Food Hall is a new concept from the people who brought you Legion Brewing, featuring new brews and three food stalls each with its own unique fare. Trolley Barn has outdoor seating and a second-floor patio with an amazing view of the Charlotte skyline, Atherton Mill, and the Light Rail.

Give Back This Weekend

It is time to put those yellow vests back on! South End Social and U.S. Bank are hosting another Rail Trail Cleanup next Saturday, August 21st. Volunteers will walk as individuals or small groups to clean up litter along the Rail Trail and surrounding streets.

Volunteers can register online here, or in-person anytime between 10:00-11:00 am at the New Bern Light Rail Station. The first 50 volunteers will receive coffee and biscuit minis from Callie's Hot Little Biscuit, and there is a volunteer appreciation event at The Union after the event, at 12:00 pm.

Additional sponsors include Keep Charlotte Beautiful and Skufca Law
