You're Invited: Camden Road Stakeholder Update, Oct 14

Last year, residents asked the City of Charlotte about opportunities to make Camden Road more walkable and pedestrian-centered. Many options have been studied! Please join CDOT and CCCP for a conversation about what we’ve learned, and what’s next.

There will be two virtual sessions, with identical content in each.

After registering, you will receive an email confirmation. On October 14th, access the meeting link by following the "view event details" button in the confirmation email. (We'll send you a reminder, too.)

Session 1: Oct 14, 11:00 am- 12:30 pm (virtual)
Session 2: Oct 14, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm (virtual)

What's Going on in South End?

Community leaders and neighbors met this week for the Fall South End Community Meeting. Attendees heard about what was happening in the street, on the Rail Trail, and in the community from representatives of the City of Charlotte, Charlotte Center City Partners, and CMPD. Here's what was covered:
  • The South End Water Main Project to replace the water main that serves our area is currently in its 6th phase, there are 11 phases total and the project continues to move north. Charlotte Water is working diligently to minimize disruption and maintain pedestrian access throughout the work zones. Sign up for e-mail updates or text southendwater to 31996.
  • Camden Road is one of the most beloved and vibrant parts of our city. Join us for the Camden Road Stakeholder Update Meeting on October 14 to learn more.
  • Shop Small Saturdays will return this holiday season! Stay tuned for more info.
  • The I-277 Pedestrian Bridge connecting South End and Uptown on the Rail Trail is currently 70% through the design process. There will be a community outreach event and design reveal soon, when design is 95% complete. This transformational public project was made possible with unique partnership funding from NCDOT, Mecklenburg County, City of Charlotte, U.S. Bank.
  • A new light rail station is in the works! Part of the 2018 South End Vision Plan, this project will allow for a safe crossing of the light rail tracks between Tremont Ave and Remount Road, and add new mobility and commute options to the neighborhood. The project is in early design, and only exists because of collaborative funding between the City of Charlotte, CATS, and the generous grants of private actors.
  • Wilmore Centennial Park at South End is officially open! Mecklenburg County Park and Rec and Beacon Partners are working with the contractor to complete a few final improvements and ensure plants are thriving. Park signage is in production. Programming will start up slowly this fall, with an opening celebration to be held at a future date.
  • Community safety is a top priority for Captain Brad Koch and CMPD's Central Division. There are 90 officers in CMPD Central Division, across 3 shifts. The majority of calls for service in CMPD Central Division are for quality of life issues like noise violations, vehicle violations and panhandling. The Central Division has also recently welcomed two new community officers responsible for Response Area 3, Officer Justin Davies and Officer Brad Hall. Please reach out to Captain Koch, Officer Davies or Officer Hall with any non-urgent community safety matter. For emergency response, use 911.

New Art Alert

Last year, Lowe's Home Improvement, ArtPop Street Gallery, Charlotte Center City Partners and a few private property owners joined forces to display art in empty window spaces across South End in a project called Windows of Hope.

ArtPop and Lowes have continued this partnership as part of ArtPop's Inspiration Projects. Check out the three new works by Adam Jochin, Bridgette Martin, and Laurie Smithwick, currently on display in the windows at Lowe's on South Blvd. We love to see this creative collaboration continue!

Explore the Neighborhood Through Art: Oct 1

Take in the local art scene during the First Friday Gallery Crawl, an evening when galleries and shops offer extended hours, special receptions, live painting, and music. Build in a visit to any of the neighborhood’s restaurants and breweries, and it’s a whole night out!
