KTC Singles Club Championship round up

This past weekend, the KTC hosted its annual Singles Club Championship on probably the hottest weekend of the summer. In temperatures approaching 40 degrees, some 60 participants took to the courts to strut their stuff. Many played three or four matches on Saturday or Sunday as they worked their way through the draw.

And the winner is...
We're pleased to announce that last year's formidable finalist, Maria Constandinou, is now KTC’s 2020 Women's Club Champion. Maria defeated France Couture 6-3, 6-3 in the final. It was a very well-contested final with both ladies playing some fantastic tennis. And a shout out as well to our semi-finalists: Lisa Coates and Dora Nomikos.

Maria movingly echoed the views of many KTC members after the tournament: "We all really needed this tournament, a chance to play but also to bond. And KTC planned, organized, and ran a safe space for us to do that. It would not have been possible without all the dedicated volunteers.... Thank you so so much. What a fantastic weekend!"

Arsalan Ijaz is now a two-time KTC Men's Champion with back-to-back wins in 2019 and again this year. He beat Emile Flavin in a great final late Sunday afternoon (6-3, 6-0).  Both men gave it their all in the final in front of a very supportive KTC crowd of spectators, and displayed great sportsmanship and quality tennis. Congratulations as well to our other semi finalists; Sam Faris and Ben Lewis, who fought hard in the brutal mid-day heat.

We also want to congratulate our consolation winners and runner-ups:
Women’s B Pool Winner - Abby Lincoln
Women’s C Pool Winner - Asia Zolnierczyk
Women’s D Pool Winner - Julie Richards
Men’s B Pool Winner - David Sly
Men’s C Pool Winner - Adam Szulewski
Men’s D Pool Winner - Gord Hunter

We couldn't have done it without you!

Without the help of more than 20 dedicated volunteers, the 2020 singles tournament would not have run as smoothly and successfully as it did. As one spectator noted, "it was a blast" - and really, how often have we been able to say that over the past four months! Our huge thanks to the tournament organizing team:

(Pictured: Patsy LeBlanc, one of many helpful volunteers at the entry tent. We offer thanks as well to Viki, Yoshiko, Lorna, Nerissa, Alma, Tracey, Gary, Gill, Ceren, Abby, and Donna who all took shifts.)

  • Arsalan Ijaz, our tournament director, who oversaw every aspect of tournament play from organizing draws and player guidelines (not for the faint of heart in the COVID environment) to player communication and registration. All of this, in between the terrific tennis matches he was playing. Arsalan was ably assisted by Yaoting Zhang, who filled in at the sign-in table, and by Sam Faris, who helped set up the tournament draw.

  • Cole Vezina, who assisted Arsalan in running the tournament, but also designed the KTC 2020 "Light it up" t-shirts that were on full display at the tournament, arranged beautiful gift bags from Maison Paul for our champions, and while not on court himself, took action shots of fellow players.

  • Julie Hoffarth, who lined up a great crew of volunteers for the entry tent, and organized everything imaginable from raffles prizes to t-shirt production to signage and seating around the club. A big thanks as well to Viki Andrevska who helped Julie with the set-up of the tent and entry table.

  • Alma Thayer and her amazing team of stewards, Dana, Jack and Luke, who were deeply involved in tournament organization and worked on-site to ensure everything ran smoothly. Jack, in particular, had a busy weekend both on and off the court (making it to the D Pool Finals in his first tournament).

  • And to our other photographers, Paula Loh and Azi Jamali-Afousi, who provided a great supply of top-notch photos, some of which you see in this newsletter and will soon see on our website, and Facebook. Follow the links below to check them out!

In Memory of Peter Girard....a friend, tennis partner and gentleman
Peter and KTC tennis partners on closing day in 2001

Peter Girard, 92, died Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Kingston General Hospital.

We are told that at the age of 65, after his retirement, Peter took up tennis. He became an avid player and tough opponent, as many of his regular partners over the years will attest.  And more than twenty-five years later, at the age of 91, Peter was still playing. He finally retired his racquet last fall.

His other great sporting passion was sailing. He was a lifetime member of the Kingston Yacht Club where he spent many years racing dinghies and keelboats. For several years, Peter sponsored a special gift at the annual KTC late summer gala and silent auction:  a day on the water sailing with Peter. Members, like Dave Corrigan and Gill Turnbull, recall winning this coveted auction item then having a delightful sailing experience on Lake Ontario with picnic lunches.

Peter is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kathleen, his three children and five grandchildren.
