April 18: KTC and COVID-19 - an update

Dear KTC community members,

As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, health and civic officials have continued to issue new guidelines and extend others. Ontario’s emergency declaration, which includes the closure of outdoor recreational areas such as tennis courts, has been extended to May 12, and Tennis Canada has issued a statement asking people not to play. With these directives in place, KTC will unfortunately not be able to open as scheduled on April 25 next week.

It’s hard to say at this time when the 2020 season will begin or how long it will last. The Board of Directors will meet the week of April 20 to discuss the situation and consider next steps. We’re hoping for the best and plan to open as soon as possible.

We recognize that many of you have already paid your membership fees or camp fees for your children. Please be patient as we make decisions over the next few weeks. If the season is significantly curtailed or the camps cancelled, the board will ensure that members are reimbursed appropriately.

This is obviously a disappointing development but the health and safety of our members takes precedence over our desire to get out and play. We also strongly urge members to respect the fact that the club is currently closed. Please do not use the courts until we officially give the go-ahead to do so.

While the news isn’t what we hoped, there may be silver linings. Despite the delays, work on Courts 2 and 3 should be largely completed by the time the club opens, which will help us avoid booking jams as we return to action. Early Bird membership rates have been extended until further notice, which will help those feeling the economic pinch of the pandemic. And while KTC is facing a huge double whammy this year of both major expenses for the Court work and what so far amounts to a historic 70% reduction in revenues, our club is strong and we will ride out this storm.

You can read the Tennis Canada statement here.  KTC will continue to monitor the situation and will update members as necessary. Please feel free to email us if you have any questions.

Stay home. Stay healthy. Stay safe.
