Health Center Requests If Your Child Receives Medication at the Health Center...
...in order for that medication to be sent home with your child over the upcoming fall Long Weekend, we must receive your specific approval to do so via email. To be clear, your child’s medication will not be sent home with them for the Long Weekend unless we receive an email from you that explicitly states you want the medication to be sent home with your child. Please remind your child to pick up their medication, as we will not mail medications. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your statement of permission (or refusal) by this coming Tuesday, October 5. Also, please remind your child that if he or she is approved to take medication off campus, he or she must return the medication immediately upon returning to campus.
If You Need to Schedule a Local Medical Appointment for Your Child...
...please do NOT reschedule or otherwise adjust the time of the appointment before consulting with the Health Center. Like most schools in the nation right now, St. Andrew’s is dealing with a severe shortage of drivers this fall, and scheduling drivers to take students off-campus is challenging. If a student’s local medical appointment is rescheduled on short notice, we may not be able to find a driver to take a student to that appointment.
Flu shots will be available for all students (at no cost) at the Health Center beginning next Wednesday, October 6, and will be administered until we have exhausted our supply (we will have enough shots for all students and adults in the community). Flu shots are not mandatory, but are strongly recommended for all students. If your child is on the fence about getting a flu shot, here are some reasons to do so.
College Financial Aid Apps Now Available
VI Form parents, if you are planning to apply for college financial aid this fall, please click here to review important details about the financial aid application timeline and process (we also sent this information to all seniors earlier this week). Today, Friday, October 1, two important documents for applying for financial aid become available online: the FAFSA and the CSS Profile.
Update to Spring Calendar
Due to an overlap with the SATs, we have moved the date of our 2021 Arts Weekend by one week; Arts Weekend will now take place over the weekend of May 13-15. Prom has moved to Saturday, May 7. An updated one-page annual calendar can be viewed here.
Do You Know a Future St. Andrean?
As we begin a new school year, the Admission Office is excited to share more about all that St. Andrew’s has to offer with prospective students and families. If you have a family member, friend, neighbor, or colleague with children who you think would be a good match for St. Andrew’s, we would love to hear from you—our current students and families are our best ambassadors. You can also encourage any “future Saints” to fill out our online inquiry form. Over the course of the fall, the Admission Office will be offering a series of virtual Open Houses, on-campus tours for fully vaccinated visitors, and virtual tour and interview options. More information about all of these opportunities can be found on our website.
What’s Going on with Vidigami?
Many of you have asked about access and updates to Vidigami. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Vidigami is our school photo-sharing platform; it is the vehicle by which we share photos of students with our parents. Unfortunately, the Vidigami platform underwent a complete redesign this summer, and in so doing, made some of its basic features (photo uploads, album organization, search by name) difficult or impossible to use. The Communications Office is currently searching for a new photo-sharing platform for the school. We hope to have something in place and launched to parents by the end of October.
Volunteer with SAS!
Although our parent body is scattered around the country and the world, there are many opportunities for parent involvement at St. Andrew’s. If you're interested, click here to learn more and sign up.
Save the Date!
Friday, October 22 - Sunday, October 24 Parents Weekend 2021
Please RSVP here. A full schedule of events and important details about our health and safety protocols are available here.
Celebrating the Installation of our Fifth Head of School
At 11:00 AM today, the school community gathered for the official installation of Head of School Joy McGrath—only the fifth such installation in the school’s 90-year history! The service, led on the Front Lawn by Bishop Kevin Brown, featured remarks by Ben Polak, professor of economics and former provost at Yale University, and by Joy herself. Click here to read more, or watch the entire service here.
Welcoming Stacia Smart
On September 21, students gave a hearty welcome to cyclist Stacia Smart, and celebrated the legacy of SAS alumnus Owen Strong ’07. Stacia is currently on an 1100-mile solo bicycle tour along the East Coast in order to raise funds for glioblastoma research, and in honor of Owen, who died from the effects of glioblastoma on January 11, 2020. Along the way she is stopping at places of meaning for Owen— and SAS was, conveniently enough, the halfway point of her journey. Click here to read more about about Stacia’s visit and Owen’s legacy, listen to a chapel talk Stacia gave to students, and view photos from Stacia’s “arrival party.”
Planting Seeds to Teach
On the first day of English 4, teacher Will Torrey and his seniors dove into a 75-minute discussion inspired by fire escapes and the Organic Garden. Along the way, Mr. Torrey attempted to answer, for himself and his students, the following “Big Questions”: Why do we talk about literature? And what is the point of this class? Click here to find out the answers.
Saints on Three!
Athlete of the Week: Tony “The Toe” Wang ’22
Tony, who plays on the football and the soccer team, kicked two field goals of 42 and 40 yards for Saints football in a 27-7 win over Severn School. The 42-yard field goal was just one yard short of tying the school record for longest field goal. Not satisfied with chasing one school record in a week, in a September 14 soccer match against Wilmington Christian, Tony, who is starting striker for the Saints, netted five goals to tie another school record for most goals in a single soccer game. Click here to read a short interview with Tony.
Many parents have inquired about athletics livestreaming. We have not livestreamed athletics in the past, with a very few exceptions, but we are working on doing so going forward. Chris Hayes, the school’s new sports information officer (get to know him here) joined SAS on September 27 and will be setting up livestreaming for home competitions, pending delivery of some livestreaming equipment that has been delayed by COVID supply chain issues. We will of course communicate with parents how, where, and when you can watch athletics livestreams. In the meantime, you can:
