New From Brian Staveley HQ!
Dear Reader,
Some writers, I would imagine, put out newsletters on some kind of regular schedule—the first Monday of each month, every solstice and equinox, full moons, whatever.
My approach to newsletters, as it turns out, is more like that of an ambush predator. I spend many, many months in succession not writing newsletters. I fail to write them so consistently, in fact, that people begin to forget that they ever signed up for a newsletter in the first place. Life sure is good, these people think, not getting newsletters.
Then: BAM! That’s when I strike. Like a moray eel. Or a jaguar. Or a frogfish.
Or, you know, like a writer who is too disorganized to keep track of his own damn newsletter.
Anyway, here I am and I’ve been piling up the news for this very moment!
First, I have a new book on the way. The Empire’s Ruin drops on July 6.
“I have questions!” you exclaim.
Fortunately, I have answers.
Q: Why did it take you so ‘Kent-kissing long to write this thing?
A: I did it wrong the first time.
Q: Like, what? You had to revise it?
A: Like, the book had been accepted for publication and the publisher had paid me for it and then my agent called me up at 9PM on a Friday and told me it was terrible.
Q: That seems mean.
A: It was mean. It was so mean. Thank you. I had to give back the advance and everything. Unfortunately, my agent was also very, very right. (She is always right.) That first book was a ‘Kent-kissing mess.
Q: So… this new one. Is it terrible, too?
A: People seem to think not. I’m certainly proud of it. But this is your chance to find out for yourself!
Q: Ok, cool, so what’s the deal?
A: The Empire’s Ruin is the opening volume of a new trilogy. Same world as the other books, but about five years after the events of The Last Mortal Bond.
Q: Any characters I might recognize?
A: Well, that’s Gwenna there on the cover. And there’s Akiil, last of the Shin monks. And the grown son of a certain murderous priestess of death. Plus a whole batch of new folks: Goatface, Stupid, Rat, Jonon lem Jonon, Chent, Bhuma Dhar, Monster…
Q: That sounds like a lot of characters. Is this a big book?
A: The biggest one yet! Evidently there was some concern it was too big to bind? I don’t know. I don’t do bindings.
Q: Where do I get my mitts on it?
A: Well, all the usual places, but I’d like to put in a plug for my local bookstore here in the hills of southern VT. They’ve survived through the pandemic, and once again they’re offering to do signed preorders for me. You can go right to their website, order, and put in the “Order Comments” section how you’d like the book signed/inscribed. Then, BOOM, when it drops it’ll show up on your doorstep! Click here for more!

You can also get any of the other books from them, also signed.
Or, you know, you can use Amazon.
Q: That’s cool, I guess. But do I get anything else if I preorder?
A: Yes you greedy little gremlin, thank you for asking. This brings me to my second major announcement of the newsletter:
Q: Wait, what?
A: Check out these T-shirts. TONS of t-shirts! Seven different designs covering everything from Rassambur Summer Camp to the Ashk’lan Culinary Academy. More t-shirts than Old Navy and American Apparel combined. Awesome t-shirts. All available for your purchasing pleasure.
Q: Woah, and what’s this other stuff?
A: Those are maps you can buy. Those are Annurian coins.
Q: Annur’s not real. There can’t be coins.
A: That’s a statement, not a question.
Q: Fine. How can you have coins from a fake fantasy empire?
A: We made them.
Q: Are they like bitcoin?
A: Not even remotely.
Q: Can I use them to buy stuff?
A: When the economy collapses and paper currency is useful only for burning on dark winter nights these coins will prove invaluable. Until then, they are just beautiful works of art.
Q: How is all this related to preorders of The Empire’s Ruin?
A: Legion M is running an awesome promotion. If you preorder the book, either from them or anywhere else, you can get 20% off any two items of merch. Just GO HERE to claim your just rewards
Q: Legion M? What’s Legion M? Why are they selling this stuff for you?
A: I’m a nice person. People like to do nice things for nice people.
Q: Bullshit.
A: Again—not a question.
Q: I’m beginning to loathe this format.
A: I’ll just be waiting right here.
A: See how easy that was? It’s a production company. Which brings me to my third piece of very exciting news! You didn’t expect three exciting newses when you opened this newsletter, did you? That’s how an ambush newsletter predator does it. Anyway, Legion M is the team that’s working their assess off to make this thing into a TV show. They are amazing people with a really unique, fan-owned business model. Click here for a teeny video they’ve made about the books.
Q: It’s going to be a TV show?
A: I can’t answer that.
Q: Like, you don’t know, or you’re contractually forbidden to answer?
A: I can’t answer that.
A: I can answer other questions. Ask me a different question! Oooh! Ask me if I learned to play the cello during the pandemic!
Q: [irritated sigh] Did you learn to play the cello during pandemic?
A: Nope.
And that concludes this newsletter!
New book—BAM! 💥
New merch—BAM! 💥
New TV show in Schrodinger’s Development—BAM! 💥
Now go forget all about this so I can ambush you against next time.
All the Best,

Brian Staveley, author of The Emperor’s Blades, gives readers the first book in a new epic fantasy trilogy based in the world of his popular series the Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne, The Empire’s Ruin.

The Annurian Empire is disintegrating. The advantages it used for millennia have fallen to ruin. The ranks of the Kettral have been decimated from within, and the kenta gates, granting instantaneous travel across the vast lands of the empire, can no longer be used.

In order to save the empire, one of the surviving Kettral must voyage beyond the edge of the known world through a land that warps and poisons all living things to find the nesting ground of the giant war hawks. Meanwhile, a monk turned con-artist may hold the secret to the kenta gates.

But time is running out. Deep within the southern reaches of the empire and ancient god-like race has begun to stir.

What they discover will change them and the Annurian Empire forever. If they can survive.
