Kernels Cajole Cancer Cell Death

Macadamias, hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds and pistachios – while delicious for snacking, these nuts can also pump the brakes on colon cancer cell growth in vitro.

Once fermented in the digestive system, the fibre these nuts contain contributes to the production of butyrate, which promotes the health of the intestinal mucosa and exerts chemo protective effects.

Additionally, the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase and superoxide dismutase, were increased in nut treated samples, reducing the levels of cancer-promoting reactive oxygen species. The nuts also significantly inhibited the growth of the colon adenoma cells and increased apoptosis.  When it comes to chemoprevention, the nuttier the better.

Your Brain Loves Hot Mochas

Savour the delicious combination of cocoa and caffeine and enjoy the benefits of improved concentration and cognition.  Lucky test subjects explored whether drinking either cocoa, caffeinated cocoa, caffeine or placebo would have the greatest benefit on cognition and mood when completing tasks evaluating brain function.

While cocoa alone did reduce errors and increase reaction time, the combination of cocoa and caffeine came up trumps.  By sipping on both, participants had a reduction in anxiety compared to taking caffeine alone, as well as increased accuracy on test scores.

With caffeine antagonising adenosine receptors within the brain and cocoa increasing cerebral blood flow, consider swapping out your coffee for a hot mocha or some chocolate covered coffee beans next time you are looking for laser focus.

The Heart Beats For Zinc

Free radicals have free rain in zinc deficiency, leaving the heart open for attack.  In a recent study, animals who were administered a zinc deficient diet, showed a greater degree of cardiac oxidative stress, even in subclinical deficiency states.

Results demonstrated that as the body’s zinc declined, so did the levels of the heart’s primary antioxidants.  Vitamin E and glutathione.  Intriguingly throughout the study period, the heart compensated for this by restoring local zinc levels, to the detriment of other organs zinc stores.

Whilst magnesium is typically thought of as the ‘heart mineral’, this shows the value of arming the heart’s defences with zinc.

Cauliflower vegetable dish

I am enjoying all the fresh spring produce.  Tonight I picked a cauliflower and some broccoli from the garden and made the following cauliflower vegetable dish.

1)  Quarter of a fresh cauliflower
2)  One head of broccoli fresh from my garden.
3)  One carrot grated.
4)  Two cloves of garlic
5)  Two tablespoons of sunflower seeds.
6)  Handful of chopped parsley.
7)  Olive oil
8)  One teaspoon herb yeast salt

Place the cauliflower and broccoli in a blender and blend until fine.
Heat the oil in a pan and add the chopped garlic add all the other ingredients and stir fry until cooked.

Avocado and Chocolate Mousse

Two ripe avocados
One small cake of dark Whittaker’s chocolate

Place the avocados in a blender.
Melt the chocolate and add to the avocado.
Blend until smooth and place in small dishes and place in the fridge to set.

Final tip: This is a great way to create, imagine, produce and visualize.
Every morning write down three things that you love and every evening write down three things that you are grateful for.
