Sustaining Research Excellence Awards (SRE) Request for Proposals:

Budget total = up to $80,000

Funding Period: July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024

 
As part of the Sustaining Research Excellence (SRE) Core of AK INBRE 4, successful biomedical and health researchers within the INBRE network may be nominated to receive funding for the support of graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and technicians, the purchase of equipment, and/or to provide for buyouts from teaching or clinical duties. This support is meant as an incentive for successful investigators to remain in Alaska and further develop their research program through the continued acquisition of major grants.

The Alaska IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. The primary objective of Alaska INBRE Undergraduate Reserarch Assistantship (URA) initiative is to provide support for a project in the biomedical sciences and health with mentorship from UA biomedical or health faculty. Students funded through this program will gain valuable experience in designing, conducting and reporting biomedical research. The purpose is to train undergraduate students in scientific methods, scientific writing, reporting, and presentation preparation. This URA opportunity is for students at UAA and UAF. Note: URAs at UAS are funded through a different mechanism.

The primary objective of the Alaska INBRE Summer Academic Enrichment Diversity Undergraduate Research Opportunity initiative is to provide support for a project in the biomedical sciences and health with mentorship from a UA faculty member. Students funded through this program will gain valuable experience in designing, conducting, and reporting biomedical research. The purpose is to train undergraduate students in scientific methods, scientific writing, reporting, and presentation preparation. Priority will be given to Alaska Native students and students from other underrepresented groups as defined by NIH. Students will be funded through this solicitation for conducting research at UAF, UAA, or UAS.

In addition to the wonderful itinerary of professional development sessions led by our colleagues, we also have several speakers we are excited to announce:
  • Dr. Sharon Milgram, Director of the Office of Intramural Training and Education at the NIH. Dr. Milgram leads a series on resilience that promotes the mental health and well-being of the academic research community. We are accited to announce that Dr. Milgram will be attending and presenting several sessions on reiliency at our IGNITE workshop.
  • Dr. Kevin Chu, Senior Vice President and CEO of The Implementation Group. Dr. Chu will be joining us to talk about the ins and outs of grant writing.
  • Geoff Welch is a local small business owner and performance coach. He is passionate about helping individuals reach their full potential and do their most important work.

Alaska INBRE Graduate Research Assistantship Request for Proposals - Alaska INBRE is accepting proposals for approximately eight Graduate Research Assistantships for AY 23-24 and Summer 2024. Submission date for Administrative Review is January 9, 2023, and the Submission Due Date is January 13, 2023. Awards will be announced February 15, 2023.

EPA Request for Applications - Center for Early Lifestage Vulnerabilities to Environmental Stressors - Cumulative Health Impacts for Children in Underserved Rural Agricultural Communities in the United States. NIH Mental Health and Well-being Series for Biomedical Researchers. This series will address nuanced areas of mental health that directly impact the biomedical field. Studies have found that symptoms of anxiety and depression are linked to other mental health issues such as perfectionism, trauma responses, suicide and numbing behaviors. This series will cover such topics to continue to promote well-being and thriving for the community. Many talks in the series will be followed by a focused "OITE Thriving Thursday" discussion to more deeply explore issues raised in the talk. This webinar is open to all NIHers and folks outside the NIH, including students, fellows, staff, and faculty. NAIPI Annual Meeting - Virtual Format - December 12-14, 2022. Registration is now open! The NISBRE is a national scientific meeting to showcase the scientific and training accomplishments of the IDeA program of the NIGMS. The registration fee is $200 per program (COBRE, INBRE, CTR). This registration fee will allow investigators, faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students to register for free and submit abstracts for oral and/or poster presentations. PROJECT MANAGER FOR FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION RESEARCH PROJECT:  The Center for Alaska Native Health Research (CANHR) is seeking a full-time Project Manager to oversee the management and conduct of funded research studies focused on promoting food sovereignty, diet qualty and health equity among Alaska Native families and communities. Projects include co-developing a conceptual framework for understanding the relationship between a subsistence way of life and holistic health, using an equity-driven approach to document parents' lived experience feeding young children nutritious foods, and conducting a community readiness assessment around health eating.
