Hampton Life Saving Club    November 2022 News

In this issue (buckle up—there's a lot here):

  • Parents needed for Nipper groups to go forward
  • Book a preseason swim for your Nipper
  • Nippers on the 26th: Where to go, when to arrive, what to bring, etc.
  • Starfish big dates
  • Sport carnival and training invitation
  • One-week lifesaving certification: SRC and Bronze camp
  • Requal update
  • What your membership includes!
ATTENTION Parents of U6, U7, U8 boys and girls, and U9, U10, U11 boys

No volunteers for an age group = no nipper program

Thank you to those who have already signed up! Unfortunately, many roles remain vacant.

The following will not have a nipper program unless we get volunteers to be age group managers (AGMs) or assistant AGMs.
  • U6 and U7—boys and girls
  • U8 boys and girls, U9 girls—need more assistant AGMs
  • U9, U10 and U11 boys
What an AGM Does
You don't need any special skills, or to even run or go in the water. Plus, you'll be considered an "active family" and receive a discount on next year's membership fees.

Ideally, AGMs attend 8+ of the 13 sessions and assistants attend 6+.

AGMs sign Nippers in and out and provide support for the junior coaches as they guide the weekly activities. A brief training session this Saturday, 19th November from 2:30-4pm at the club, will prepare you. (If you can't make it, sign up and email Sam Dwyer to be briefed.)

Click the button below to sign up. In addition, please complete the Life Saving Victoria AGM and child safe training modules. Where to find these courses.

Equipment Team
We are also looking for a couple more parents to help with the equipment team. You wlil be briefed in a session this Saturday the 19th of November from 2:30-4pm at the club. (If you absolutely can't make the training session, email Sam Dwyer to be briefed before the season starts.)

In addition, please complete the Life Saving Victoria child safe training module. Where to find this course.

You'll also be considered an "active family" and receive a discount on next year's membership fees.

Nippers preseason swim check: Book an indoor slot for this Sunday

In the past, we've always held a proficiency swim on the first day of Nippers. This year, you have an option of warmer water at BlueFit in Sandringham on Sunday, 20th November.
Sign up for BlueFit now.

Nippers who can't make it on the 20th can still complete the requirement on the first day (or as soon as water quality allows).

If your child has been in lessons and swimming, they'll have no trouble with the skills. You'll find a brief description of the skills required by age group on our site. Or you can watch videos detailing the process under the Junior Evaluations - Preliminary Assessment Videos tab on this page.

- Erin Reed, Director of Junior Activities

Nipper parents: Weekly kiosk, BBQ, setup, packup and water safety signup

Age group  managers, assistant AGMs and equipment team do not have to sign up for these tasks.

There are a range of roles that must be filled each week. It is expected that a parent or guardian for each nipper will volunteer at least twice across the nippers season.

In addition, please complete the Life Saving Victoria child safe training module. Where to find this course.

Nippers updated schedule: All groups arrive for sign-in at 2:45

We have been lucky enough to revert to our original times from previous years based on water safety numbers—how exciting!

The first week (26th November), it helps to get to the beach early. Please arrive by 2:30 to pick up a rashie or sun hat. Head to the shop window or table to the right of the roller doors.

In addition, any Nipper who has not yet passed the preseason swim evaluation will complete it at the first session.

Weekly schedule:
  • 2:45 All groups sign in at their flags—Look for your child's age group's flag (they may be spread out across the sand). An age group manager will greet you and sign you in. They'll also have your child's coloured Nipper cap. Starfish families, look for a cluster of four blue flags closer to the patrol tent.
  • 3:00 Nippers and Starfish begin
  • 4:00 U6 to U9 and Starfish wrap up
  • 4:30 U10 to U14 finish
  • After sign-out: Enjoy an ice cream or snag and head upstairs to the bar for a drink

NOTE: All Nippers must be signed out, so patrollers know they are safely out of the water and in your care.

Starfish Nippers: Here we go with our 10th season!!!

We are very excited to be launching into our 10th year—a HUGE and EXCITING achievement!! Mega thanks to three mentors who have been there from the start—Jeff Walton, Cailtin Cole and Janine Mitchell—and original Starfish Charlie, Tom W, Tommi B, Charles and Edward. You have all grown in so many ways!!

Exciting times ahead—make sure these dates are in your calendar:

Birthday celebration on Saturday 3 December!
EARLIER START: 2pm (upstairs for 30mins) to 4pm

2022-23 Starfish Carnival on Sunday 26 February
We'll welcome other Victorian Starfish clubs for a fun-filled lifesaving carnival.

Welcome to new Mentors—Carolline, Holly, Anneke, Felix and Dan and welcome back Annabelle! And to all our wonderful mentors returning again for another season.

We look forward to seeing you for our first week—Saturday 26 November. See you at 2:45pm for a 3pm start. Dig out those wetsuits as it is not that warm yet!!

- Kerrie Curtis, Starfish Manager

What do pack/wear/do for Nippers

Don't forget:
  • Adults must stay on the beach and sign Nippers in and out. Nippers is not a kiss-and-go program.
  • Sunscreen applied before you arrive
  • Water bottle
  • High-vis rashie—wear your own or buy one from the club
  • Broad-brim hat—lifesaving follows a no hat/no play rule
  • Shirt with shoulders covered for beach activities
  • Wetsuit—we hope the weather and water quality improve, but even on 21 and sunny days, the water temperature in November is only around 18 degrees. On windy, cooler or cloudy days, a wetsuit is a good choice.
  • Goggles
  • Towel
  • Warm clothes for after/the ride home.
  • Card for purchases at the kiosk, BBQ and bar
  • Cash for the wetsuit swap (a rack of outgrown wetties from other club members—usually $5-$20)
