Activity Group Matters
Spanish Beginners

There will soon be a change of Group Leader as Jenny is going to be leaving sunny Kinver to live in Spain.  The Group and the committee recognise the hard work that Jenny has put in, with the group going from strength to strength with good attendance.  Jill Westwood will be taking over this Group during June and will, we can be sure, keep up the good work.  The group is full at the moment but anyone interested in being put on a waiting list can contact Jill on

Bridge Club
We have a new activity Group scheduled to start in June - flagged up in last month's Newsletter and now firmly on the agenda.  Meeting twice a month we will be assembling at the St Peters Church Hall for an afternoon of Bridge.  Green eye shades and a steely impassive face are not required for this friendly and engaging game so good natured (arn't we all?!) beginners and experienced players alike are invited to attend. The first session is on Tuesday 11th June  at 2.00pm.

Look out next month for news of the Curling Group - not far behind in its planning and preparation - (though perhaps obtaining sets of curling stones is a tad more time consuming than picking up packs of playing cards!)

History Group
For some while the meetings at the Fire Station have been limited in duration by a booking close on the History Group's heels.  This constraint has now eased and members will be glad to know that the Fire Station bookings will now be set at 1145 to 1330.  On Monday 10 June the Group meet in the KSCA car park for a 10.00 departure to Middleton Hall nr Tamworth B78 2AE.  This medieval hall was allowed to fall into disrepair over many years but since 1970 has been restored by a charitable trust. Much work has been done on the main hall, walled garden, Tudor barn complex (now craft shops) and a 16th-century jettied building, which was close to collapse before restoration commenced. The stables and lodging block are on Historic England's Heritage at Risk register due their poor condition

On Monday 24 June at the Fire Station there will be a presentation on The Cambridge Five; the story of Guy Burgess and his associates who spied for the Russians during and after WWII.

Ukulele Groups
The Beginners' Group will come to the end of its first course during July and will be starting up again in the early autumn with a new 10 week course.  Jeff Howell will open the books for new learners by notification in this Newsletter :  so budding ukulele players - keep your eyes on the Newsletter next month!  You can look forward to a programme that (with a little bit of effort and a commitment to practice) will take you from being an absolute beginner to become a competent player able to play dozens of songs.

Ukes on the Edge - the "stage name" of our more advanced ukulele group will continue a strong programme of performances that this month will include attendance at both the Halfpenny Green Food and Wine Festival on 8th June and at the Broadwaters Fete in Kidderminster on 22nd June.  The Group played both of these venues last year, went down extremely well at both, and is back by welcome invitations to play again.

Community Engagement
Dosey Doe
Members are advised that our neighbouring U3A in Hagley have invited us to a Barn Dance.  The event will be held on 14th June from 2.00pm to 4.00pm at St Saviour's Church Hall, Hagley with music from Banjacs and refreshments all for £3.00.  Take your pardners for a hoedown!  Tickets available from Gaynor Butler:  email

Kinver Open Garden weekend.UNE 22nd and 23rd
12 noon until 6pm
A real treat for garden lovers with a wide variety of landscapes, plants and a few surprises along the way - and with refreshments at the Kinver Fire Station: cobs, cakes, scones, tea, coffee and cold drinks.
The funds raised at this Open Garden event will be allocated towards the purchase of new comfortable chairs at the KSCA - requested by U3A and New Kinver Players and  which, when we have them, will benefit all users of the KSCA.
Programmes will be available in advance from Compton Care shop and in the High Street under the clock tower from 11.30 on both days.

Committee Matters
Trusted Partners at the Fire Station
We are now getting well into the holiday season and, even though most of our activities go on throughout the summer there is one recurring problem that Trusted Partners have to deal with - that is, how to get someone to stand in for them at their own groups if they are away.  The Trusted Partner role is an important one with duties beyond simply opening and closing the Fire Station;  but the one thing that nobody can do - except another Trusted Partner - is open up and close the building.

So, we do have a list of all the Trusted Partners and it is hoped (and intended) that they will assist each other by supporting others who are away. After all, they are the only people who can help and it is likely that each one of them will at some stage need to ask for help themselves.   So if you need cover for your activity group the first call should be to another Trusted Partner on the list.  If that fails, the Group Co-ordinators, Rod and Ben,  should be consulted.  If any of the Trusted partners does not have a list of their colleagues, please ask Rod.

U3A Summer Party
Jean Bates and the Social Committee have been putting their heads together and planning our annual summer party at the KSCA.  We have a date:  Friday 2nd August from 7.00 to 10.30 and we know that we will be treated to quizzes, interactive games, and singers - including a local rock and roll/ country and western singer.  More details are to follow so please put the date in your diary.   Tickets (to include a posh supper) are priced at £10 for U3A members and £12 for guests.

Annual General Meeting
You will all know from previous communications that the AGM is on 31 May at 2.00pm at the KSCA.  While questions from members will be very welcome we expect the formalities to be over fairly quickly allowing us time to enjoy the speaker (this month it is "They don't make them like that any more" from Patricia Boyd) - and tea and cakes with your U3A friends.

You will be aware that any contributions received for refreshments go to a local charity and this month is no different - the beneficiary in May is the well regarded Local Charity formed to bring  Belarusian children to a respite visit to Kinver.  These children, victims of the Chernobyl disaster,  aged between 8 and 15 come from the hazardous environment of Belarus, for fresh air, good food and plenty of tender love and care with local families, with whom they stay. They often lacking the bare essentials like nightclothes, under clothes and good shoes.  If you can help we are going to have a couple of large boxes at the back of the room for donations, stationery, toiletries, shoes, First Aid, second hand clothes  and toys to use here and to take home to Belarus.
Example items that we collect:
  • Vitamins
  • paracetamol
  • Second hand jewellery
  • Second hand toys

  • First aid, plasters bandages savlon etc.
  • Hair brushes combs
  • Unwanted presents for their Mums and Dads
