Chairman’s note

May I wish you all a very Happy Christmas from myself and from all the members of your Committee. We are all volunteers and are rewarded by seeing  the development of a properly functioning, successful U3A with a wide range of activities. Our Group Co-ordinators who run those activities deserve a huge thank you from all of us for the efforts they put in and we should applaud them for their energy and achievements during 2019.

Looking forward to 2020 I am pleased to see an expansion of those activities continuing. So, I am going to suggest a New Year’s Resolution for your consideration. As “Third Agers” we all now have the opportunity to engage in that activity we thought about during our working lives and for which we never had the time. For some, it may have been to learn to sing, for others to do that local history research or develop a craft skill. Perhaps it was to learn to read music or, at last, to learn conversational French, Italian or Spanish. The range is as wide as human activity and any one of us can start out on something we never dreamed we could do.

Why not, then, think about starting a group that reflects your interest and share it with your fellow members? It may be a subset of a group already in existence or it may be something entirely different – but do it. Don’t worry about the  mechanics – there is always someone around to advise on locations or structure. And don’t worry about the task of “Group Leadership”. In our U3A we have embraced the U3A ethos of Group Co-ordination. It is not so much about leadership but more about facilitating the learning you want to take part in. You don't need to be a teacher or an expert.  Nationally, the U3A has a comprehensive Resources Centre and there are subject experts to provide model courses if needed. And, of course, there are other members who have already done it and will be happy to give advice and help.

Please do think about it. Do talk to me or another Committee Member. But, most importantly, do resolve to do it. That is what the U3A is for: active development and engagement in your older years.  Not only is it enjoyable, it is also good for you.

Merry Christmas and a Happy, Active and Engaged New Year to you all

Rod Marshall
Chairman

Group Matters

International film
Members are reminded that the new International Film Group starts on 6th January.  There is already a healthy membership but there remains a little room for those who are interested.  Contact JUlia Bathurst on the email address shown above or through the new U3A website.

Memory Group
Members will recall the successful Memory Group sessions run by Edward Conduit this year.  Ed has now been asked to run a Memory course for Stourbridge U3A and is planning sessions starting soon: possibly at the St James Church in Wollaston.  Ed can be contacted on econduit@yahoo.com if any Kinver members want to go along.

Other Matters

Community Engagement
Members will be interested in knowing that your U3A continues to engage with the wider community in Kinver through both involvement at the KSCA and though taking part in community events.  The Small Business Saturday in December included a performance from Ukes on the Edge and was a success including attendance by our local MP and by Kinver Councillors.

Ukes on the Edge have given a record number of concerts during December to private groups, at Nursing Homes and at organised events outside Kinver including the Wombourne Christmas Tree festival.

Monthly Members Meeting
Following a late cancellation by the planned speaker in November  Maggie Jones organised at short notice an alternative event which was a great success.  Everyone who attended enjoyed a quiz followed by a cream tea.  Many thanks are due to Maggie for pulling this together so quickly and so well.

Normal service will be resumed in January when the Members' Meeting on 31st January will be addressed by Max Keen, who will be talking about the English Civil War history of Worcestershire.

Beetle Drive
The Beetle Drive planned for December was regrettably cancelled at short notice but members will be pleased to know that it has been scheduled for Tuesday 21 January from 1230 to 4.30.   Tickets are available now from Jean Bates (see email above) and from Group Co-ordinators.  Could all Group Co-ordinators please remind Members of this event and sell the tickets - liaising with Jean to keep track of numbers and payments.

Given the Christmas Break will Group Coordinators please make this a priority

And Finally

Editors Note

A Merry Christmas from me and best wishes for the New Year.  My suggestion for a New Year Resolution is that you send me at least one article during the year for inclusion in the Newsletter telling us about your experience of the U3A and of progress of the groups you are involved in!
