Activity Groups Matters
A full list of activities is included at the end of this Newsletter.   Members can attend any group but please, if you are a first timer, contact the group leader beforehand (see the website for details).  Members may also consider starting a new group with others if they would wish to see a new addition to the list of groups.  Rod Marshall or Ben Thompson, the Group Co-ordinators, can give advice on setting up a new group and  on how to organise the first couple of meetings.  After that the new group members will all take a part in setting the direction and speed of learning.

History Group
The August meeting of the group takes place at the Fire Station on 12th for an 11.45. start.  Ros Willetts will talk about Katherine Swynford the second wife of John of Gaunt'
 -
On Monday 26 August (Bank Holiday Monday) we will meet in the KSCA car park for a 10.00 departure to walk the Worcester Town Trail and visit The Commandery HQ of the Royalist army in the Battle of Worcester, the last battle of the Civil War.

Tai Chi Groups
Both the Intermediate and Advanced Tai Chi groups remain full with no vacancies for new members.  The associated Tai Chi and Balance Exercise Group has a small number of vacancies but is reaching capacity.  This popular activity is in demand and Tai Chi Groups are a flourishing example of the way the U3A encourages groups to operate.  There is a constant checking with members that their development needs are being met and a positive effort put into ensuring that all members are consulted and listened to when the future is discussed.  The groups have considered and are making plans for expansion of their offering to include a Beginners Tai Chi Group.  This will be facilitated by an experienced member using positive coaching against a background of videos.  This is the classic U3A approach where members learn from other members, who give their time freely - rather than from professional teachers.  And it works:  the popularity of Kinver U3A Tai Chi group  is testament to that.

There will be an article on the Beginners Group in the next Newsletter - the plans are for the new group to start in October.

Kurling Group
The Kurling Group is now established at the KSFC, meeting on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, 10.00 to 12.00.  Rod Marshall has worked hard to get the group off the ground and is now looking for a group facilitator to take this forward.  The task is, as the title suggests, one of making sure that premises are booked (already sorted out) that people know what to do to keep things moving (pretty much established) and to listen to the members if there are issues to be addressed.  It also includes keeping in touch with Rod in his role of Group Co-ordinator and occasionally letting me, the Editor of this Newsletter, informed of how well things are going so I can mention it here (other Group Facilitators are asked to do the same!).

Fire Station
Our use of the Fire station is subject to conditions, for example about leaving the place tidy - which really does not need repeating.  However, some of their conditions reflect the fact that the premises is the working base of locally based firefighters.  They obviously want to make us welcome but I have had a grumble about arrival times - both for the Trusted Partners and the members.  The rules are straightforward.  No one should arrive earlier than 15 minutes before the start:  the Trusted Partner needs to be among the first so that the premises can be opened for the others.  The complaint is about people arriving before the TP and ringing the Fire Station Bell (on the aluminium panel) in the lobby rather than the white bell push marked U3A.  This disturbs the staff in their duties and is causing grumbles.

So: Trusted Partners to arrive early and group members to be patient if no one answers the U3A bell.  The Fire Station staff cannot help if no one answers the U3A bell.

Group Facilitators request
Some of our groups are quite small in number.  If then some members are unable to attend, the viability of the session can be affected.  For these groups it would help considerably if you can notify the Group Facilitator if you are not able to get to particular sessions.  Arrangements can then be made either to reschedule the meeting (often quite difficult) or change the planned session to cope with fewer people.  Of course it is accepted that sometimes circumstances on the day cause a problem and this is unavoidable - but if you can let people know in advance it is helpful and would be appreciated.

Helping out
A request for volunteers to assist at the monthly meetings was included in June's Newsletter without much of a response.  The U3A only functions through volunteers and indeed it is intended to be a self help organisation.  The members who have been "doing the tea" (and all the rest)  now need to move on and there is a real need for a new approach.  It has been suggested that we might ask each Activity Group to take it in turn to manage the monthly meeting, sorting out the chairs, managing the tea break and helping to tidy up - and it is a good suggestion.  It would enable each group to showcase their group activities on a noticeboard or by some more imaginative means.  The committee will be discussing this further in the August Committee meeting but, meanwhile, we do need someone (in fact three or four people) to help out this month for our Members meeting on 26th July.  Please help.  If you are able to help this month please let Hilary Weaver know on Hilary.Weaver1@btinternet.com

On the subject of the Monthly Meeting, Members will like to know that these volunteers have been instrumental in raising over £200 so far this year for good causes from tea and coffee donations.  Well done to our members for their generosity and well done to the meeting volunteers.

Kinver U3A Website
The new website is at www.u3akinver.org.  Please make sure that you search in this format.  There is an old website which we are seeking to have taken down and is now out of date.  (Beware:  if you have previously gone onto the old website your search engine will probably take you to that same old website again).
Group facilitators are encouraged to send any updates and new content for the new website to Jackie Ward, who will upload it onto the new site.  It is intended that within a very short time each group will be able directly to manage the content of their own destination in the new site - meanwhile Jackie is working hard at getting all aspects of the new site operational.
