Leonardo Enterprises Pilot Project Funds Rescue Drone

Two years ago, while laying on a beach in Belize, senior mechanical engineering major, Gonzalo Perez, had an idea for a “rescue robot” to help extinguish fires.  That idea evolved into a drone specially equipped to deliver aid to people in emergencies. With the mentorship of School of Engineering Dean Eddy Rojas and the financial backing of Leonardo Enterprises, Perez has built a fully-functioning prototype that can deliver a five pound payload up to a mile away. Ambassadors are the Face of UD Engineering

The School of Engineering's Student Ambassadors were taken to lunch last week in appreciation for all their hard work this year. Ambassadors are the face of UD engineering and work with the Diversity in Engineering Center to coordinate the student recruitment process within the School. The Ambassadors met with 500 prospective families this spring alone! Thank you, Ambassadors.
With May 1 looming as the deadline for students to deposit, the School of Engineering is optimistic that it’s enhanced recruitment efforts will pay off. Preliminary numbers show a nice increase in women and minority students with the School on track to reach its goal of 450 incoming students.

Colleen Bretland Joins Co-op Staff

Colleen Bretland has just joined the advising staff of the engineering Cooperative Education Program. Colleen will split her time between the Office of Student Success, where she has been advising first-year and sophomore students for over a year, and the Cooperative Education office, where she will begin advising students about engineering co-op. Going forward, Mary Harbach will be the point of contact for MEE majors and Colleen for all other majors. Welcome to co-op Colleen!

Mars Rover Power System Tested at UDRI

The key to answers about life on Mars and beyond lies in a small finned cylinder – a power generator that is the lifeblood of NASA’s rover Curiosity. Aside from the one on Mars, only two other Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators have been built – and both are now at the University of Dayton Research Institute’s MMRTG Lifecycle Testing Laboratory.
