CAP Newsletter Spring 2020

We’ve put together a dedicated Coronavirus page on our website which brings together key information and support for communities concerned about underage and young adult drinking – take a look here

All CAP staff and advisers are now working from home, but we are still here to support those communities that are experiencing problems with underage and young adult drinking.

We recognise that many of our community partners such as local authorities, schools, retailers, police and youth organisations, are focusing on essential services and doing everything they can to keep everyone safe during the pandemic.

So a lot of our activities will necessarily be put on hold for the moment, such as the launch of new CAPs and community meetings. But our advisers remain available to help with support and advice by telephone or email.

We’ll also be increasing our communications during this time and sending out this newsletter regularly, to keep you up to date with the latest developments and advice. Sign up to receive our newsletter here.

CAPs are finding new ways of working during lockdown

We know that in the current lockdown, many communities are concerned about underage and young adult drinking.

Because of social distancing rules, CAPs around the country are finding innovative ways to tackle the issue. In Barrow, one of CAP’s partners is Drop Zone, which provides a safe place for youngsters to meet and learn.

After the centre closed at the end of March, the challenge for managers Cath Corkhill and Sue Johnson was to deliver as many of their services as possible remotely – see how they did it.

Tower Hamlets reports on the success of its Lansbury CAP

The Lansbury CAP in Tower Hamlets has seen great success in its education and enforcement strands and reports how the partnership’s interactive workshops on alcohol, sexual exploitation and grooming reached over 400 pupils at five schools.

The CAP has now evaluated its work, highlighting a partnership with Tesco to offer free responsible retailer training for all off-licenses across the borough, a successful collaboration with a local youth centre and work to identify and make Designated Premises Holders at off-licences more accountable. You can see the evaluation on the CAP website here

Smashed Online

We work with Smashed, a global theatre in education programme by Collingwood Learning which combines a powerful and inspiring live theatre performance with interactive workshops, teaching resources and online learning to educate young people on the dangers of underage drinking.

So we are delighted that funder Diageo has agreed to make Smashed Online available free of charge to all UK schools. Smashed Online is easy to distribute - students can sign up individually and complete the course at home, downloading a certificate on completion. You can find out more here

Grants for IT
The Department for Education has issued guidance for schools and colleges on how to get internet access, digital devices and support to provide remote education for disadvantaged children and schools during the coronavirus outbreak. This will include digital devices such as laptops and tablets as well as internet access.

Laptops and tablets will be provided for disadvantaged families, children and young people who do not currently have access to them. Internet access will be provided through 4G hotspot devices for disadvantaged year 10 pupils, care leavers and young people aged 11 to 19 with a social worker. People aged 16 to 19 without a suitable device for education will be eligible for support through the 16 to 19 Bursary Fund. Local authorities, trusts and other relevant organisations overseeing schools and social care can apply.
