Building schools in underserved communities in Myanmar
Celebrating Peace Corps
A New School Building

BSB co-founders Andrew Lederer and Robert Cornwell served as volunteers in the US Peace Corps, Andrew in India and Bob in Jamaica. So when the chance came to work with current volunteer Abby Hester in Myanmar (Burma), we were excited.

Abby contacted Bob about the need for a large new building at Thanatpin High School near Bego in Southern Myanmar, where she was teaching. Several old buildings needed replacement; one was no longer safe to use. With a proposal drafted by Abby with help from the school staff and her Myanmar counterpart You You Wah, BSB Country Director Naing Lin Swe travelled to Thanatpin to assess the school. Partnership with communities and local organizations is at the heart of every BSB school project. The Thanatpin community helped plan the building, donated labor and money for new toilets. They also cut a trackway to get materials to the site.

Several challenges had to be overcome, including a lack of space and school yard flooding during the rainy season. Naing, Abby and the Thanatpin school committee worked diligently to gain approvals, prepare the site and begin construction of a new two story, steel structure classroom building in early 2019.

On June 1, BSB and Thanatpin celebrated the building’s completion, just in time for the beginning of a new school year.

BSB is grateful to Abby’s family for the generous donation that made the new school building possible. The rapid completion of this quality building would not have been accomplished without Naing Lin Swe’s hard work and dedication. We thank him.
